Further, low lean mass was associated with chronic graft-versus-host disease, while high AG ratio was associated with lower testosterone levels. Since the combination of low lean mass and high AG ratio increases the risk of cardio-metabolic disease, these health issues should be monitored at long-term clinical follow-up after paediatric HSCT.Despite substantial improvements in the outcomes of patients with cancer over the past two decades, older adults (aged ≥65 years) with cancer are a rapidly increasing population and continue to have worse outcomes than their younger counterparts. Managing cancer in this population can be challenging because of competing health and ageing-related conditions that can influence treatment decision-making and affect outcomes. Geriatric screening tools and comprehensive geriatric assessment can help to identify patients who are most at risk of poor outcomes from cancer treatment and to better allocate treatment for these patients. The use of evidence-based management strategies to optimize geriatric conditions can improve communication and satisfaction between physicians, patients and caregivers as well as clinical outcomes in this population. Clinical trials are currently underway to further determine the effect of geriatric assessment combined with management interventions on cancer outcomes as well as the predictive value of geriatric assessment in the context of treatment with contemporary systemic therapies such as immunotherapies and targeted therapies. selleck chemical In this Review, we summarize the unique challenges of treating older adults with cancer and describe the current guidelines as well as investigational studies underway to improve the outcomes of these patients.Hammerhead sharks are characterized by a conspicuous lateral expansion of the head forming a structure known as a cephalofoil. Two theories regarding the function of this structure suggest that it may increase maneuverability as well as produce dynamic lift similar to a cambered airplane wing. Here we report on a family-wide computational fluid dynamics analysis of all eight hammerhead shark species and three sharks with typical head shape. Models cast of the heads of fresh and museum specimens of hammerhead and typical sharks were used to produce pressure surface maps and lift and drag polar diagrams at various angles of attack. These analyses suggested that the cephalofoil (1) provides greater maneuverability that may be important in prey capture efficacy, (2) does not provide significant dynamic lift when held parallel to flow, (3) is characterized by greater drag than typical sharks across all attack angles, and (4) was found to result in a 10-x increase in energetic cost over typical shark head morphologies.Multiple myeloma (MM) is a currently incurable malignancy of antibody-secreting plasma cells. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been recognised as an important class of regulatory molecules which are increasingly implicated in tumorigenesis. While recent studies have demonstrated changes in expression of lncRNAs in MM, the functional significance and molecular pathways downstream of these changes remain poorly characterised. In this study, we have performed CRISPR-mediated deletion of the locus encoding the lncRNA Colorectal Neoplasia Differentially Expressed (CRNDE), a known oncogenic lncRNA that is overexpressed in plasma cells of MM patients and is a marker of poor prognosis. We found that CRISPR-mediated deletion of the CRNDE locus in MM cells decreases proliferation and adhesion properties, increases sensitivity to Dexamethasone and reduces tumour growth in an in vivo xenograft model. Transcriptomic profiling in CRNDE-deleted MM cells demonstrated that CRNDE activates expression of a number of genes previously implicated in the aetiology of MM, including IL6R. We further demonstrate that deletion of the CRNDE locus diminishes IL6 signalling and proliferative responses in MM cells. Altogether this study reveals the IL6 signalling pathway as a novel mechanism by which CRNDE impacts upon MM cell growth and disease progression. The impact of material chemical composition on microbial growth on building materials remains relatively poorly understood. We investigate the influence of the chemical composition of material extractives on microbial growth and community dynamics on 30 different wood species that were naturally inoculated, wetted, and held at high humidity for several weeks. Microbial growth was assessed by visual assessment and molecular sequencing. Unwetted material powders and microbial swab samples were analyzed using reverse phase liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Different wood species demonstrated varying susceptibility to microbial growth after 3 weeks and visible coverage and fungal qPCR concentrations were correlated (R2 = 0.55). Aspergillaceae was most abundant across all samples; Meruliaceae was more prevalent on 8 materials with the highest visible microbial growth. A larger and more diverse set of compounds was detected from the wood shavings compared to the microbial swabs, indicating a complex and heterogeneous chemical composition within wood types. Several individual compounds putatively identified in wood samples showed statistically significant, near-monotonic associations with microbial growth, including C11H16O4, C18H34O4, and C6H15NO. A pilot experiment confirmed the inhibitory effects of dosing a sample of wood materials with varying concentrations of liquid C6H15NO (assuming it presented as Diethylethanolamine). The ability of simultaneous polarization filter and wavefront shaping is very important for many applications, especially for polarization imaging. However, traditional methods rely on complex combinations of bulky optical components, which not only hinder the miniaturization and integration but also reduce the efficiency and imaging quality. Metasurfaces have shown extraordinary electromagnetic properties to manipulate the amplitude, polarization, and wavefront. Unfortunately, multi-layer metasurfaces with complex fabrication are often required to realize complex functions. Here, a platform of monolayer all-dielectric metasurfaces is proposed to simultaneously achieve polarization filtering and wavefront shaping, based on the principle of local polarization-selective constructive or destructive interference. The transmission efficiency surpassing 0.75 and polarization extinction ratio exceeding 11.6 dB are achieved by the proposed metasurface at the wavelength of 10.6 μm. These results are comparable to those of multi-layer metasurfaces.
