Retinoblastoma survivors with a germline RB1 mutation are at elevated risk for secondary (nonocular) malignancy, but their risk for low-grade glioma (LGG) is unknown. We performed a retrospective review of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the NCI databases that revealed that three of the 837 5-year survivors of hereditary retinoblastoma were diagnosed with an LGG and a fourth patient (but unilateral and without a germline mutation) was identified at another center. The study was designed to verify the potential effectiveness of fennel EOs in the treatment of inflammation and arthritis. Since tissue proteins denaturation is a major cause of arthritic diseases, fennel EOs and their main constituents were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the heat-induced proteins degradation using bovine serum albumin as a protein model. Moreover, the in vitro inhibitory effects of the three EOs on the pro-inflammatory mediator nitric oxide (NO) production were verified in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Estragole (28.81-33.40 %), anethole (24.16-27.40 %), fenchone (9.76-18.48 %), α-phellandrene (1.63-8.37 %) and limonene (5.54-6.05 %) were the major constituents. All the EOs showed a concentration-dependent biological activity, being the flower EO the most effective in inhibiting NO production (IC50 =232.2±11.3 μg/mL). The leaf EO showed a very good bovine serum albumin (BSA) anti-denaturation activity (IC50 =95.9±2.4 μg/mL). Moreover, four components were proved to be effective in protecting protein from heat-induced degradation, being α-phellandrene the most active compound (IC50 =73.2±1.9 μg/mL).Crop production will likely face enormous challenges against the occurrences of extreme climatic events projected under future climate change. Heat waves that occur at critical stages of the reproductive phase have detrimental impacts on the grain yield formation of rice (Oryza sativa). Accurate estimates of these impacts are essential to evaluate the effects of climate change on rice. However, the accuracy of these predictions by crop models has not been extensively tested. In this study, we evaluated 14 rice growth models against four year phytotron experiments with four levels of heat treatments imposed at different times after flowering. We found that all models greatly underestimated the negative effects of heat on grain yield, suggesting that yield projections with these models do not reflect food shocks that may occur under short-term extreme heat stress (SEHS). As a result, crop model ensembles do not help to provide accurate estimates of grain yield under heat stress. We examined the functions of grain-setting rate response to temperature (TRF_GS) used in eight models and showed that adjusting the effective periods of TRF_GS improved the model performance, especially for models simulating accumulative daily temperature effects. For TRF_GS which uses daily maximum temperature averaged for the effective period, the models provided better grain yield estimates by using maximum temperatures averaged only when daily maximum temperatures exceeded the base temperature (Tbase ). An alternative method based on heating-degree days and stage-dependent heat sensitivity parameters further decreased the prediction uncertainty of grain yield under heat stress, where stage-dependent heat sensitivity was more important than heat dose for model improvement under SEHS. These results suggest the limitation of the applicability of existing rice models to variable climatic conditions and the urgent need for an alternative grain-setting function accounting for the stage-dependent heat sensitivity.Here, we present a case of a distal-type bronchiolar adenoma (BA) of the lung. BAs are benign lung tumors characterized by nodular proliferation of bilayered bronchiolar-type epithelium with a continuous layer of basal cells. This patient underwent S3 segmentectomy following detection by computed tomography (CT) scan of a gradually enlarging ground-glass nodule (GGO) over a five month period. Nodule morphology and immunophenotype were consistent with those of distal-type BA of the lung. An epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) exon 21 p.L858R missense mutation was identified which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first case to be reported of a common gene mutation associated with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) being found in a BA lesion. Here, we report three experiments investigating how infants statistically segment words from two overlapping languages in a simulated language-mixing bilingual environment. In the first two experiments, we investigated whether 9.5-month-olds can use French and English phonetic markers to segment words from two overlapping artificial languages produced by one individual. After showing that infants could segment the languages when the languages were presented in isolation (Experiment 1), we presented infants with two interleaved languages differing in phonetic cues (Experiment 2). Both monolingual and bilingual infants successfully segmented words from one of the two languages-the language heard last during familiarization.
