Roles of bioelectrical signals are increasingly recognized in excitable and nonexcitable non-neural tissues. Diverse ion-selective channels, pumps, and gap junctions participate in bioelectrical signaling, including those transporting calcium ions (Ca2+). Ca2+ is the most versatile transported ion, because it serves as an electrical charge carrier and a biochemical regulator for multiple molecular binding, enzyme, and transcription activities. We aspire to learn how bioelectrical signals crosstalk to biochemical/biomechanical signals. In this study, we review four recent studies showing how bioelectrical currents and Ca2+ signaling affect collective dermal cell migration during feather bud elongation, affect chondrogenic differentiation in limb development, couple with mechanical tension in aligning gut smooth muscle, and affect mitochondrial function and skeletal muscle atrophy. We observe bioelectrical signals involved in several developmental and pathological conditions in chickens and mice at multiple spatial scales cellular, cellular collective, and subcellular. These examples inspire novel concept and approaches for future basic and translational studies.A Li-conversion α-Fe2O3@C nanocomposite anode and a high-voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode are synthesized in parallel, characterized, and combined in a Li-ion battery. α-Fe2O3@C is prepared via annealing of maghemite iron oxide and sucrose under an argon atmosphere and subsequent oxidation in air. The nanocomposite exhibits a satisfactory electrochemical response in a lithium half-cell, delivering almost 900 mA h g-1, as well as a significantly longer cycle life and higher rate capability compared to the bare iron oxide precursor. The LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode, achieved using a modified co-precipitation approach, reveals a well-defined spinel structure without impurities, a sub-micrometrical morphology, and a reversible capacity of ca. 120 mA h g-1 in a lithium half-cell with an operating voltage of 4.8 V. Hence, a lithium-ion battery is assembled by coupling the α-Fe2O3@C anode with the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode. This cell operates at about 3.2 V, delivering a stable capacity of 110 mA h g-1 (referred to the cathode mass) with a Coulombic efficiency exceeding 97%. Therefore, this cell is suggested as a promising energy storage system with expected low economic and environmental impacts.In some thin-film solar cells the light-absorbing layer is a mosaic of crystalline grains whose boundaries run from the back to the front of the cell. We used the semiconductor modeling software Sesame to do numerical calculations of the optoelectronic properties of such cells assuming that recombination of minority photocarriers occurs primarily at the grain boundaries. The work complements analytical results for diffusion-limited recombination at grain boundaries and dislocations. We chose idealized n-CdS/p-CdTe solar cells for illustration. We find that the open-circuit voltage, V OC, under illumination declines logarithmically with increasing ratio D/θ2, where D is the ambipolar diffusion constant governing minority-carrier transport and θ is the grain size (from 1 to 10 μm). While a decline in V OC as mobility increases is counterintuitive, this finding is consistent with related analytical results and confirms their utility. However, open-circuit voltages are about 0.04-0.10 V lower than the corresponding analytical estimates. We show that the deficit is mostly a consequence of a recombination shortcut. At open circuit, minority photocarrier currents at points closer to the n-CdS interface than to a grain boundary are directed through the conducting front layers and terminate near the "hot spot" at the intersection with the grain boundary. The shortcut lowers open-circuit voltages by about 0.05 V below the analytical estimates.Selection indices are used in genetic improvement programs, with the purpose of selectins simultaneous for several economically important traits. The objective of this study was to construct equations for selection indices in the Blanco-Orejinegro (BON) breed and to determine the index that would generate the greatest genetic progress. Limited research on strategies to eliminate pathogens in these environments are available. Rendered fat characteristics, such as water activity and fatty acids composition, may contribute to Salmonella survivability. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effects of moisture levels (0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 3%), storage temperatures (48 and 76 ˚C), and fat characteristics on the growth and survival of Salmonella in beef tallow, white grease and poultry fat samples. Samples were inoculated with a high (~108 CFU/mL) and a low (~105 CFU/mL) Salmonella cocktail (S. Senftenberg, S. Newport, S. Thompson and S. Infantis). Samples were stored for up to 5 days at 48 and 76 ºC. Remaining population was evaluated daily with and without enrichment step. Death rates were calculated using Weibull model for each temperature and moisture level. link2 Only temperature had an effect (P less then 0.05) on Salmonella inactivation, while no effect between moisture and/or inoculum level were observed. When all products were challenged at 76 ˚C, counts were below detectable limits after 6 hours. At 48˚C a progressive decline in Salmonella population was observed within 3 days for both beef tallow and white grease when high inoculum was used for the challenge study. Salmonella was below detectable limit within 4 days for both fat types when a low inoculum was instead applied. This research identified the effect of moisture and temperature in rendered fat samples contaminated with Salmonella and underlined the need to use time-moisture-temperature data to minimize microbial growth during transportation and storage.
The effect of calcium plus vitamin D (CaD) supplementation on risk of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast, a nonobligate precursor of invasive ductal carcinoma, is not well understood. In this secondary analysis, we examined this association in the Women's Health Initiative CaD trial over approximately 20 years of follow-up.

A total of 36 282 cancer-free postmenopausal women (50-79 years) were randomly assigned to daily (d) calcium (1000 mg) plus vitamin D (400 IU) supplementation or to a placebo. Personal supplementation with vitamin D (≤600 IU/d, subsequently raised to 1000 IU/d) and calcium (≤1000 mg/d) was allowed. The intervention phase (median = 7.1 years), was followed by a postintervention phase (additional 13.8 years), which included 86.0% of the surviving women. A total of 595 incident DCIS cases were ascertained. Hazard ratios (HRs) plus 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated.

The intervention group had a lower risk of DCIS throughout follow-up (HR = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.70 to 0.96) and during the postintervention phase (HR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.61 to 0.94). The group that used CaD personal supplements in combination with the trial intervention had a lower risk of DCIS compared with the trial placebo group that did not use personal supplementation (HR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.56 to 0.91).

Premenopausal women with high-risk hormone receptor (HR)-positive breast cancer often receive ovarian function suppression (OFS) with aromatase inhibitor therapy; however, abrupt menopause induction, together with further decrements in estrogen exposure through aromatase inhibition, may affect cardiovascular microcirculatory function. We examined adenosine-induced changes in left ventricular (LV) myocardial T1, a potential subclinical marker of LV microcirculatory function in premenopausal women undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Twenty-one premenopausal women (14 with HR-positive breast cancer receiving OFS with an aromatase inhibitor and 7 comparator women with triple-negative breast cancer [TNBC] who had completed primary systemic therapy) underwent serial resting and adenosine cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging measurements of LV myocardial T1 and LV volumes, mass, and ejection fraction. All statistical tests were 2-sided.

After a median of 4.0 months (range = 3.1-5.7 months), the stressan aromatase inhibitor experienced reductions in adenosine-associated changes in LV myocardial T1 relative to women who received nonhormonal therapy for TNBC. These findings suggest a possible adverse impact on LV myocardial microcirculatory function in premenopausal women with breast cancer receiving hormone deprivation therapy.
Physical activity is associated with lower risk for endometrial cancer, but the extent to which the association is mediated by body mass index (BMI) in midlife is unclear. This study describes the physical activity-endometrial cancer association and whether BMI mediates this relationship.

Participants were 67 705 women in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study (50-71 years) who recalled their physical activity patterns starting at age 15-18 years. We identified 5 long-term physical activity patterns between adolescence and cohort entry (ie, inactive, maintained low, maintained high, increasers, decreasers). We used Cox regression to assess the relationship between these patterns and midlife BMI and endometrial cancer, adjusting for covariates. Mediation analysis was used to estimate the proportion of the physical activity-endometrial cancer association that was mediated by midlife BMI.
