Serial organ tissues and blood were harvested for histopathology, viral load and titre, chemokine/cytokine assay, and neutralising antibody titre. RESULTS The Syrian hamster could be consistently infected by SARS-CoV-2. Maximal clinical signs of rapid breathing, weight loss, histopathological changes from the initial exudative phase of diffuse alveolar damage with extensive apoptosis to the later proliferative phase of tissue repair, airway and intestinal involvement with virus nucleocapsid protein expression, high lung viral load, and spleen and lymphoid atrophy associated with marked cytokine activation were observed within the first week of virus challenge. The lung virus titre was between 105-107 TCID50/g. Challenged index hamsters consistently infected naïve contact hamsters housed within the same cage, resulting in similar pathology but not weight loss. All infected hamsters recovered and developed mean serum neutralising antibody titre ≥1427 fourteen days post-challenge. Immunoprophylaxis with early convalescent serum achieved significant decrease in lung viral load but not in lung pathology. No consistent non-synonymous adaptive mutation of the spike was found in viruses isolated from infected hamsters. CONCLUSIONS Besides satisfying the Koch's postulates, this readily available hamster model is an important tool for studying transmission, pathogenesis, treatment, and vaccination against SARS-CoV-2. © The Author(s) 2020. Bees are the most efficient and diverse members of the pollinator community; therefore, it is imperative that management strategies be implemented that positively affect bee community composition and health. Here, we test responses of the bee and flowering plant communities to land management treatments in the context of grasslands in the upper Midwestern United States, a critical area with respect to bee declines. Twelve sites were selected to examine floral resources and wild bee communities based on three different types of grasslands tallgrass prairie remnants, ungrazed restorations, and grazed restorations. Total bee abundance was significantly higher in ungrazed restorations than remnants, but there were no significant differences among grasslands in community composition or Shannon diversity. Across the three grassland types we also examined mass and lipid stores as nutritional health indicators in three sweat bees (Halictidae), Augochlora pura, Agapostemon virescens, and Halictus ligatus. Although there were no differences in lipid content, total average bee mass was significantly higher in Ag. virescens collected from ungrazed restorations as compared to remnants. Floral abundance of native and non-native species combined was significantly higher in grazed restorations compared to remnants and ungrazed restorations. However, ungrazed restorations had higher abundance and richness of native flowering ramets. These data suggest that bee abundance and nutrition are driven by high abundance of native flowering plant species, rather than total flowering plants. © The Author(s) 2020. Objective To characterize outcomes in adults undergoing primary gracilis transfer for facial paralysis stratified by donor nerve used for neurotization. Data Sources Search strategies were used in Ovid MEDLINE (1946-2019), Embase (1947-2019), Scopus (1823-2019), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and ClinicalTrials.gov (1997-2019). Study Selection Inclusion and exclusion criteria were designed to capture studies in adults with unilateral chronic facial paralysis undergoing single-paddle free gracilis transfer. All study types were included except case reports. Abstracts and full texts were reviewed in duplicate. Of 130 unique citations, 10 studies including 295 patients were included after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed between November 2018 and December 2019. Datith smiling (-0.14; 95% CI, -0.73 to 0.46) were better with MN, though the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions and Relevance Owing to heterogeneity in reported outcomes from facial reanimation, we were unable to make definitive conclusions regarding the optimal donor nerve. Establishing a reporting standard at peer-reviewed journals to improve results reporting is one method to allow for improved collaboration in the future. Standardizing follow-up times, assessing spontaneity in an objective and reproducible fashion, and use of consistent outcome measures would allow for future meta-analyses and better understanding of options for facial reanimation.Mortality from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension. These disorders share underlying pathophysiology related to the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) that may be clinically insightful. In particular, activity of the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is dysregulated in cardiovascular disease, and this enzyme is used by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to initiate the infection. Cardiovascular disease and pharmacologic RAS inhibition both increase ACE2 levels, which may increase the virulence of SARS-CoV-2 within the lung and heart. Conversely, mechanistic evidence from related coronaviruses suggests that SARS-CoV-2 infection may downregulate ACE2, leading to toxic overaccumulation of Angiotensin II that induces acute respiratory distress syndrome and fulminant myocarditis. RAS inhibition could mitigate this effect. With conflicting mechanistic evidence, we propose key clinical research priorities necessary to clarify the role of RAS inhibition in COVID-19 mortality that could be rapidly addressed by the international research community. © The Author(s) 2020. We investigated a meta-analysis to evaluate the conclusions between CFI polymorphisms (rs10033900 and rs2285714) and AMD risk. Moreover, a similar trend in subgroup of genotype method group by MALDI-TOF MS was detected. To classify the type of AMD in further, decreased association was also observed in both neovascular disease and geographic atrophy AMD. No association was found about rs2285714 polymorphism. Our present groundbreaking study suggests that the CFI rs10033900 polymorphism is potentially associated with the risk of AMD development. More than half of the patients diagnosed with HNSCC are treated with primary surgery. Objective To report the available evidence on the value of quantitative parameters of fluorodeoxyglucose F 18-labeled positron emission tomography and computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) performed before surgical treatment of HNSCC to estimate overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and distant metastasis (DM) and to discuss their limitations. Evidence Review A systematic review of the English-language literature in PubMed/MEDLINE and ScienceDirect published between January 2003 and February 15, 2019, was performed between March 1 and July 27, 2019, to identify articles addressing the association between preoperative FDG-PET/CT parameters and oncological outcomes among patients with HNSCC. Articles included those that addressed the following (1) cancer of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, or larynx; (tudies, MTV in 11 of 12 studies, and TLG in 6 of 9 studies. The spatial distribution of metabolism via textural indices seemed promising, although that factor is currently poorly evaluated only 3 studies analyzed data from radiomics indices. Conclusions and Relevance The findings of this study suggest that the prognostic effectiveness of FDG-PET/CT parameters as biomarkers of OS, DFS, and DM among patients with HNSCC treated with surgery may be valuable. see more The volumetric parameters (MTV and TLG) seemed relevant for identifying patients with a higher risk of postsurgical disease progression who could receive early therapeutic intervention to improve their prognosis. Objectives To quantify preflight to postflight changes in the opacification of the paranasal sinuses and mastoid air cells in Space Shuttle astronauts and International Space Station (ISS) astronauts and to assess whether there are differences between the 2 groups of astronauts. Design, Setting, and Participants This cohort study examined preflight and postflight head magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of 35 astronauts who had participated in either a short-duration (≤30 days) Space Shuttle mission or a long-duration (>30 days) ISS mission and had undergone both preflight and postflight MRI. Images were obtained before and after spaceflight. Images were evaluated by 2 neuroradiologists blinded to which mission each astronaut had flown and to which images were preflight or postflight images.
