Sexual regeneration is increasingly recognized as an important regeneration pathway for aspen in the western U.S., a region previously thought to be too dry for seedling establishment except for during unusually wet periods. Due to this historical assumption, information on aspen seedling establishment and factors influencing its occurrence is limited and frequently anecdotal. We conducted a systematic field survey of 15 recent fire footprints which burned in 2018 in the western U.S. to quantify how common aspen seedling establishment is following fire and to identify factors associated with establishment. We found aspen seedling establishment in 12 of 15 (80%) of fire footprints surveyed, although densities were mostly low. Establishment probability was positively associated with mean annual precipitation and negatively associated with seed-source distance and the density of asexual aspen regeneration. Our results suggest that aspen seedling establishment may be a widespread, if often low-density, feature in post-disturbance areas. Even in low numbers, aspen seedlings may play a disproportionately large role in aspen regeneration ecology, providing adaptive capacity and facilitating local range expansion.We greatly appreciate Shi and colleague for their interest in our work (1) . To investigate the potential association between neutrophil degranulation and patterns of myocardial dysfunction in a cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Two distinct phenotypes of diabetic cardiomyopathy have been described a restrictive phenotype with diastolic dysfunction (restrictive/DD) and a dilative phenotype with systolic dysfunction (dilative/SD). However, the underlying determinants of these two patterns are not yet recognized.

In this single-centre, observational, cross-sectional study, 492 patients were recruited. Ultrasonographic measurements were performed by two experienced sonographers, blinded to the clinical data of the participants. Serum biomarkers of neutrophil degranulation were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent sandwich assay (ELISA).

After adjustment for confounders, resistin, myeloperoxidase, matrix metalloproteinase 8 and matrix metalloproteinase 9/tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 complex were positively associated with the restrictive/DD pattern compared with the normal pattern. Similarly, MPO was positively associated with the dilative/SD pattern compared with the normal pattern, and resistin was negatively associated with the dilative/SD pattern compared with the restrictive/DD pattern.

TNF receptor shedding, however, compromises effective immunity by reducing bioactive TNF through the formation of inactive complexes. In this study, we first compared the effect of total soluble TNF receptors using a transgenic p55ΔNS /p75-/- murine strain on host protection during a low-dose aerosol Mtb H37Rv challenge. We report that the presence of membrane-bound TNFRp55 alone in the absence of TNFRp75 results in superior control of a primary Mtb infection where p55ΔNS /p75-/- hyperactive dendritic cells displayed an increased capacity to induce a hyperactive Mtb-specific CD4+ T-cell response. p55ΔNS /p75-/- dendritic cells expressed a higher frequency of MHCII and increased MFIs for both CD86 and MHCII, while CD4+ T cells had higher expression of CD44 and IFN-γ. Next, the relative contributions of soluble TNFRp55 and soluble TNFRp75 to host protection against either primary Mtb infection or during reactivation of latent tuberculosis were delineated by comparing the experimental outcomes of control C57BL/6 mice to transgenic p55ΔNS /p75-/- , p55ΔNS and p75-/- mouse strains. We found that soluble TNFRp55 is redundant for immune regulation during the chronic stages of a primary Mtb infection. However, TNFRp55 together with soluble TNFRp75 has a crucial role in immune regulation of reactivation of latent tuberculosis.Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists are potential pharmacological treatment options for patients at risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Therefore, we examined the association between the risk of NAFLD and the use of thiazolidinediones and GLP-1 receptor agonists compared with the use of sulfonylureas (SUs) and insulins. Additionally, we calculated the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in users of TZDs and GLP-1 receptor agonists. We conducted a population-based cohort study using primary care data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) database (2007-2018). All patients aged ≥18 with a prescription of an oral glucose-lowering agent or GLP-1 receptor agonist were included. The first prescription defined the start of follow-up. The primary outcome was a new diagnosis of NAFLD. SKF38393 mouse Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the primary outcome. Incidence rates of HCC were determined per 1,000 person-years for all exposures. The study identified 207,367 adults with a prescription for a glucose-lowering agent. The risk of NAFLD was lower in patients prescribed a thiazolidinedione than in those prescribed a SU (adjusted HR [aHR], 0.32; 95% CI, 0.20-0.51). No difference in risk of NAFLD was observed comparing GLP-1 receptor agonist use with insulin use (aHR, 1.22; 95% CI, 0.91-1.63). Conclusion Results of our study endorse the use of TZDs for selected patients at risk of NAFLD but do not support previous findings regarding the beneficial effect of GLP-1 receptor agonists. The low number of events in several subgroups may affect the generalizability of the current findings.
