Formal mentoring programs are widely used to assist nurses to adapt to clinical practice, facilitate their career development, and improve workforce retention. However, the overall benefits and challenges for stakeholders involved in formal mentoring programs remain largely unknown due to a lack of systematic reviews to synthesize relevant studies in this important area.

A systematic integrated review.

A systematic search of six databases including CINAHL, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus, Science Direct, and ProQuest was undertaken.

Studies that met the inclusion criteria were assessed for methodological quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Findings from qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods studies were extracted and synthesized thematically using a convergent synthesis method.

Twenty-two original studies were included in the review. Findings are presented under five themes the benefits for mentees, the benefits for mentors, the benefits for the hospital, challenges perceived by mentees and mentors, and mismatched mentor-mentee pairs.

Mentoring programs that build on reciprocal relationships among mentees and mentors generate substantial benefits for all if mentees are able to navigate the challenges of the complex and dynamic nature of the clinical practice environment. Organizational support is important in overcoming these challenges.

With the use of social media now entrenched among researchers, there are important questions about the role of ad hominems. Ad hominems and other forms of strong criticism became particularly evident in online discussions associated with the recent replication crisis in psychology. Here, these discussions, and a few incidences of ad hominems in journal articles, are situated in the broader history of science. It is argued that explicit codes of conduct should be considered to curb certain kinds of ad hominem comments in certain fora, but that some ad hominem discussions have an important role to play in a healthier science.
Antipsychotics and sedatives are used to treat agitation in the emergency department (ED) but carry significant risk in older adults. Our objective was to determine factors associated with their administration to older ED patients.

This was an observational study using data from the 2014-2017 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey. We identified ED visits for patients aged ≥65 years and determined whether an antipsychotic or sedative was administered. Visits related to substance use/withdrawal, other psychiatric complaints, and intubation were excluded. We performed multivariable logistic regression to identify risk factors for antipsychotic or sedative administration.

Of the 78.7 million ED visits that met inclusion criteria, 3.5% involved at least one dose of antipsychotic or sedative medication; 13% involved an antipsychotic and 92% a sedative. Rasmussen encephalitis (RE) is a progressive and destructive inflammatory disease of one hemisphere. Its cause is unknown. We investigated comorbidity and laterality factors that might predispose to RE.

We retrospectively compared the histories of 160 RE patients to those with genetic generalized epilepsy (n=154) and those with focal cortical dysplasia Type II (FCD II; n=148).

The median/mean age at symptom onset in RE was 7/10years (range = 1-53years), and 58.1% of the patients were female. The female sex predominated in RE patients, with age > 7years at disease manifestation. The left hemisphere was affected in 65.6%. Perinatal complications (preterm birth, twin pregnancies, early acquired brain lesions) were more frequent in RE than in control patients. Ipsilateral facial autoimmune conditions (scleroderma en coup de sabre, uveitis, or chorioretinitis) were only observed in RE patients (6.9%). Onset of RE was more frequently associated with fever than that of FCD II. In 33.1% of RE patients, ≥1 poc unilaterality of RE.

) channels are key effectors of vasodilatation in neurovascular coupling (NVC). K
channels expressed in cerebral endothelial cells (ECs) have been confirmed as essential modulators of NVC. Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cerebrovascular disease (CVD) impact on EC-K
channel function, but whether oxidative stress or inflammation explains this impairment remains elusive.

We evaluated K
channel function in intact and EC-denuded pial arteries of wild-type (WT) and transgenic mice overexpressing a mutated form of the human amyloid precursor protein (APP mice, recapitulating amyloid β-induced oxidative stress seen in AD) or a constitutively active form of TGF-β1 (TGF mice, recapitulating inflammation seen in cerebrovascular pathology). The benefits of antioxidant (catalase) or anti-inflammatory (indomethacin) drugs also were investigated. Vascular and neuronal components of NVC were assessed in vivo.

Our findings show that (i) K
channel-mediated maximal vasodilatation in APP and TGF mice reaches only 37% and 10%, respectively, of the response seen in WT mice; (ii) K
channel dysfunction results from K
2.1 subunit impairment; (iii) about 50% of K
-induced artery dilatation is mediated by EC-K
channels; (iv) oxidative stress and inflammation impair K
channel function, which can be restored by antioxidant and anti-inflammatory drugs; and (v) inflammation induces K
2.1 overexpression and impairs NVC in TGF mice.

Here we search for rules that apply across three common taxa of litter invertebrates in six North American forests from Panama to Oregon. We use image analysis to quantify the abundance and body size distributions of mites, springtails, and spiders in 21 1-m2 plots per forest. We contrast three hypotheses two of which focus on trait-abundance relationships and a third linking abundance to species richness. Despite three orders of magnitude variation in size, the predicted negative relationship between mean body size and abundance per area occurred in only 18% of cases, never for large bodied taxa like spiders. We likewise found only 18% of tests supported our prediction that increasing litter depth allows for high abundance; two-thirds of which occurred at a single deciduous forest in Massachusetts. In contrast, invertebrate abundance constrained species richness 76% of the time. Our results suggest that body size and habitat volume in brown food webs are rarely good predictors of variation in abundance, but that variation in diversity is generally well predicted by abundance.
We aim to describe the outcomes of Geriatric Emergency Room Innovations for Veterans (GERI-VET), the first comprehensive Veterans Affairs Geriatric ED program.

In this prospective observational cohort study at an urban Veterans Affairs Medical Center ED, participants included Veterans aged 65 years and older treated in the ED from January 7, 2017 to February 29, 2020. Veterans with an Identification of Seniors At Risk (ISAR) score >2 were considered eligible for GERI-VET, receiving geriatric screens and care coordination in addition to standard ED treatment. The control group included GERI-VET eligible Veterans who did not receive GERI-VET care. CX5461 Propensity score matching was used to compare outcomes in the GERI-VET group (N= 725) and a matched control group (n= 725). Key measures included ED resource utilization, outpatient referrals, ED admission, and 30-day admission.

In the ED, the GERI-VET group received more consults to pharmacy (315 [43.4%] vs. 195 [26.9%], p< 0.001) and social work (399 [55th of stay or re-visitation.
 Studies associated with deaf children's malocclusion and their treatment need are still very rare. Therefore, cephalometric analysis with the ability to access the skeletal, dental, and soft tissues can be used to score the severity of malocclusion and index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN) in deaf children. This study examined the use of cephalometric analysis, severity malocclusion, and orthodontic treatment need in deaf students at special need school type B (SLB-B)
in Surabaya using IOTN along with investigating IOTN correlation with the result of dental cephalometric analysis and dental health component (DHC) and aesthetic component (AC) in IOTN index.

 Sample data consisted of 33 students between the ages of 8 to 12 years old and never had any orthodontic treatment. This investigation applied the indices from IOTN, in which DHC had 10 malocclusions, and AC with the aesthetic anterior dentition comprising 10 color photographs and different dental attractiveness levels. In addition, scores were chosen from the worst feature, with the data analyzed at a significant correlation test of 0.05%.

 There was no skeletal abnormality in deaf children. It displayed the highest number of malocclusion severity scores, while the DHC assessment showed the moderate and severe categories. Based on AC evaluation, the highest numbers of malocclusion severity were found in good and moderate category in terms of teeth arrangement and aesthetic.

The stepped, coordinated, interdisciplinary Health Network for Somatoform and Functional Disorders (Sofu-Net) was developed to provide guideline-based care for patients with somatoform and functional disorders. This controlled cluster cohort study evaluated patients' mental and somatic health care use, clinical outcomes, and their predictors at 4-years follow-up.

219 patients at risk for somatoform disorders from Sofu-Net practices (n=119) and control practices (n=100) were resurveyed after 4 years using structured interviews. Outcomes were mental and somatic health care use, somatic symptom burden and depressive symptoms.

127 patients (n=74 Sofu-Net, n=53 controls) were followed up. Compared with the control group, Sofu-Net patients were significantly more likely to be referred to psychotherapy (55.4 vs. 35.8%). Younger age and more frequent GP consultations on the occasion of psychosocial problems predicted mental health care use. No difference was found between the two groups in the severity of clinical symptoms or in the extent of somatic health care use.
