To examine possible changes in the emergency patient volume and reasons for presentation to an oral and maxillofacial surgery department during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the resulting contact prohibitions. We hypothesized that the pandemic would lead to fewer patients presenting with emergent conditions.
A total of 939 patients, who presented to the Department for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Hannover Medical School during the first 4 weeks of contact prohibitions in Germany, starting from March 23, 2020 until April 19, 2020, and in comparable periods were examined. The number of patients, reason for presentation, and required treatments were documented and compared to the years 2018 and 2019. Special attention was paid to the changes in trauma cases.
We found that the number of patients in 2020 was significantly lower (P

< .01), but sex and age distributions were comparable to those in the previous years. Both the absolute and relative frequencies of dental diagnoses were significantly lower in 2020 (P
< .001, P
< .001), while the proportion of patients who presented with trauma was significantly higher (P
< .001, P
< .001). A significant decrease in patient number to the hospital, despite private practices being closed, was presumably due to patients' infection-related concerns. Trauma cases were more frequent in private settings, and traumatic events under the influence of alcohol were frequent. The circumstances and not the absolute number of trauma events had changed.
The results of this study suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic has important effects on the use of emergency services concerning oral and maxillofacial surgery in Germany.

Titanium associated risks have led to interest in resorbable hardware for open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of pediatric facial fractures. This study aims to systematically review and compare the outcomes of titanium/resorbable hardware used for ORIF of upper/midfacial fractures to determine which hardware carries a higher complication rate in the pediatric patient.
Studies published between 1990 and 2020 on the ORIF of pediatric upper/midfacial fractures were systematically reviewed. Acalabrutinib A retrospective institutional review was also conducted, and both arms were compiled for final analysis. The primary predictor value was the type of hardware used and the primary outcome was the presence of a complication. Fisher's exact test and 2-proportion 2-tailed z-test calculations were used to determine statistical significance, which was defined as a P value < .05. The low quality of published evidence precluded meta-analysis.
Systematic review of 23 studies identified 659 patients, and 77 patients werd with resorbable hardware. Additional hardware-specific outcomes data is encouraged.

On August 19, 2020, the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, Ontario, hosted a virtual retreat, bringing together international experts in urology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, medical genetics, and translational research, as well as a patient representative. The impact of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is prevalent and severe. Studies examining the IC/BPS prevalence and predictors of suicide risk are limited by their lack of theoretically relevant suicide research variables. This research reports suicide risk prevalence its biopsychosocial predictors for a community IC/BPS sample.
Self-identified female patients suffering from IC/BPS (N=813; 18-80 years, M=46.60, standard deviation [SD] 14.10) recruited from online IC/BPS support groups completed measures of demographic, pain, symptoms, and psychosocial variables. Descriptive statistics, correlations, and multivariable logistic regressions examined prevalence, variable associations, and suicide risk prediction.
Suicide risk prevalence was 38.1%. Suicide risk was associated with greater odds for exposure to suicide, psychache, hopelessness, and perceived burdensomeness to others. Further, examining suicide risk by levels of pain showed that exposure to suicide and hopelessness were consistent suicide risk predictors across pain levels; psychache for lower levels of pain, perceived burdensomeness in moderate and severe pain levels, and depression in moderate levels of pain.
The high prevalence of suicide risk is alarming and signifies an imperative for recognizing this risk within the IC/BPS population. The identified psychosocial risk factors may be used in refining screening and treatment and in directing future IC/BPS research.

This study aimed to describe the effects of bladder function following radiotherapy for localized prostate cancer by performing a systematic review on studies reporting on urodynamic findings after radiotherapy.
This systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. The review protocol was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42021229037). A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and OVID Embase. Studies were included if they involved men who underwent urodynamic studies following radiotherapy for localized prostate cancer. A total of 798 articles were screened and five articles included. A qualitative analysis was performed.
Bladder compliance appears to be impaired following radiotherapy, especially with longer followup. Impaired bladder compliance was reported in 18.8-62.5% of patients following radiotherapy. Bladder capacity was found to be statistically significantly lower following radiotherapy compared to pre-radiotherapy, and when compared with patientstomy. De novo DO may develop following radiotherapy, especially with longer followup. With only low level of evidence studies available at present, further high-quality, prospective studies are important to elucidate the impact of radiotherapy on bladder and urethral function.
This quality improvement study examined if a video-based resource could reduce delayed discharges after robotic prostatectomy while maintaining high levels of patient satisfaction.
From April 2018 to February 2020, all patients undergoing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) were asked to complete an anonymous survey evaluating their perioperative experience. The quality improvement (QI) intervention started in March 2019 with a series of six educational videos being shown to all patients. The videos were used to supplement postoperative instruction. The discharge times of all patients were obtained from The Ottawa Hospital Data Repositories. A run chart analysis was used to detect change in discharge time (outcome measure). Patient satisfaction (balancing measure) was analyzed using Chi-squared analysis and descriptive statistics.
A total of 425 robotic prostatectomies (199 pre-intervention, 226 post-intervention) were available. Analysis of the run chart revealed non-random change favoring earlier discharge in the intervention group (p<0.05), with a pre-intervention late discharge rate of 64% and a post-intervention late discharge rate of 55%. A total of 140 surveys (59 pre-intervention, 81 post-intervention) assessing patient satisfaction were completed, corresponding with a response rate of 29.6% and 35.8%, respectively. Median score on a 10-point scale for overall satisfaction was equal between the intervention and non-intervention groups (9 [interquartile range (IQR 8-10) vs. 10 [IQR 8-10], p=0.92).
Patient satisfaction with care and education was high for all patients and was not negatively impacted by this intervention. Video education tools may be one method to help improve the discharge process following RARP.

Negative ureteroscopy (NURS) is "a ureteroscopy in which no stone is found during the procedure." We aimed to determine the association between the surgical waiting list time (WLT) and the NURS rate.
We retrospectively analyzed all patients scheduled for ureteroscopy in our center between January 2017 and July 2019. The inclusion criterion was unilateral semirigid ureteroscopy for a single ureteral stone; exclusion criteria were renal-only stones, incomplete ureteroscopy, and stones >10 mm. We analyzed age, gender, body mass index, stone size, density and location, presence of a temporary double-J (DJ) stent, use of medical expulsive therapy, and WLT. Complications while waiting for surgery were also collected and analyzed.
We included 219 patients, 41 (18.7%) of whom had NURS. The median WLT was 74 days (interquartile range [IQR] 45-127). Variables protective against NURS were large stone size (odds ratio [OR] 0.78, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.66-0.93), presence of a temporary DJ stent (OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.2-0.8), and radiopaque stones (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.21-0.88). A long WLT (>60 days) increased the risk of NURS (OR 2.18, 95% CI 1.02-4.61). Complications requiring emergency department visits while waiting for surgery were documented in 58/137 (42.3%) patients with indwelling DJ stents; nonetheless, a WLT greater than the median was not associated with an increased risk of complications (p=0.38).
Long WLT has an independent, direct, and linear correlation with NURS rates. Patients at higher risk of NURS, may be offered preoperative re-evaluation with a computed tomography scan in a resource-limited setting.
