Smoking is known to be associated with an increased risk of intracranial aneurysm rupture; however, the risk in smokers stratified by age, sex, and aneurysm location is not clear.

A retrospective study of all aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) cases in Australia between 2008 and 2018 was conducted. The relative risk of aSAH in smokers compared with nonsmokers was calculated on the basis of nationwide smoking statistics and was stratified according to sex, age group, and aneurysm location.

Out of 12,915 aSAH patients, 3249 (25.2%) were active smokers. Across both men and women, smoking increased the risk of aSAH by 2.4× in 30- to 39-year-olds (95% CI 2.1-2.7), 2.4× in 40- to 49-year-olds (95% CI 2.2-2.7), 2.3× in 50- to 59-year-olds (95% CI 2.1-2.4), and 1.8× in 60- to 69-year-olds (95% CI 1.7-2.0) with less of an effect in smokers younger than 30 years (RR 1.2, 95% CI 1.0-1.5) and older than 70 years (RR 1.0, 95% CI 0.9-1.2). Compared with a nonsmoker younger than 30 years old, the relative risk of aSAH increased by an average of 7.2 for every decade spent smoking in women and an average of 4.0 for every decade spent smoking in men. Additionally, smokers were 5.2× more likely to present before 50 years of age.

Although ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery is the most common method for hydrocephalus treatment, it may lead to serious complications and require surgical interventions. Peritoneal catheter fracture is one of the common complications that may cause intermittent hydrocephalus. If patients with peritoneal catheter fracture have symptoms of hydrocephalus and ventricular dilatation, the treatment algorithm is clear. However, the diagnosis and treatment protocol remains unclear otherwise. In this article, the possible mechanisms of hydrocephalic symptoms, the diagnosis, as well as treatment algorithms are examined.

The goal of this scoping review is to assess the quantity and types of neurosurgical research published in peer-reviewed journals by authors from Ethiopia.

PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Scopus were searched for Ethiopian neurosurgery literature published from 2001 to 2021. We selected articles based on the following criteria articles must 1) discuss topics within neurosurgery and 2) focus on clinical practice and/or public health in Ethiopia. We collected data on research originality, study designs, and clinical versus public health research. The frequencies and percentages of categorical variables were reported. All analyses were conducted using Jamovi software.

Case reports/series and cohort studies remain the mainstay, with few systematic reviews and no randomized controlled trial. International collaboration accounts for approximately half of Ethiopian neurosurgery research output. Further research support and infrastructure should be developed to encourage neurosurgery articles from Ethiopia.The neuromuscular mechanisms leading to impaired motor performance after mental fatigue (MF) are not well-understood and little is known of sex-specific differences in the neuromuscular response to MF. The purpose of this study was to investigate sex-related differences in the impact of MF on neuromuscular function. Thirty young, healthy adults (15F, 15M) performed the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) to induce MF and watched the Earth documentary (control) for 30 min in a random and counterbalanced order. Before and after each task, measurements of neuromuscular function during submaximal dorsiflexion contractions were obtained. At the end of the PVT, females and males had a slower reaction time (p less then 0.001, η2p=0.41) and reported higher fatigue (p less then 0.001, η2p=0.50), suggesting the PVT induced MF. After the PVT, females and males demonstrated a decline in force during 10% maximum voluntary contractions (MVC) (p=0.006, η2p=0.24), slower motor unit firing rate during 20% MVC (p=0.04, η2p=0.15) and a longer cortical silent period (p=0.01, η2p=0.22). However, similar changes were observed in the control condition suggesting MF is unlikely to substantially alter neuromuscular function during submaximal isometric contractions in young, healthy adults. Results also suggest neuromuscular function after a MF task is similar between young, healthy females and males. Further research is required to investigate populations with higher fatigue, such as multiple sclerosis or chronic fatigue syndrome.This study was designed to explore the effects of valproic acid (VPA) on spatial and passive avoidance learning and memory as well as to assess the protective effects of L-Carnitine (LC) against VPA-induced memory deficit in the rat. Male Wistar rats received VPA (300 mg/kg/daily by i.p. injection), or LC (50 mg/kg/ daily by i.p. injection), or co-treatment with VPA and LC for 28 days. We demonstrated that treatment with LC partially ameliorated the impairment in the retrieval of reference memory and passive avoidance learning. Moreover, VPA increased anxiety-like behavior, which was partially reversed by the administration of LC. In conclusion, these results show that LC is effective in counteracting the anxiety-like behavior and reference memory impairment caused by VPA. Therefore, LC may serve as a possible therapeutic agent for VPA-induced memory change.Fragmented day-night (FDN) cycles are environments in which multiple periods of light and dark alternate across a 24 h period. Exposure to FDN cycles disrupts circadian rhythms, resulting in period lengthening and alterations to mood in mice. A constant light environment, which also induces period lengthening, is linked to mood and metabolic disturbances and disruption to the development of the circadian clock. This study aims to determine how exposure to the FDN cycle impacts development in mice, with the hypothesis that there would be similar and adverse effects as observed in constant light conditions. Our study used CD-1 mice reared under the FDN cycle compared to the commonly used 12 h light 12 h dark consolidated day-night cycle. During the first week of development, mouse pups reared under the FDN cycle gained bodyweight at a faster rate and did not avoid aberrant light exposure in comparison to 1212 LD reared mouse pups. Developmental exposure to the FDN cycle lasted two weeks, and then mice were transferred to the 1212 LD cycle, where after 2 weeks, bodyweight was similar between FDN reared and 1212 LD reared mice at 1-month and 2-months old. When re-exposed to the FDN cycle during adulthood, FDN reared pups exhibited binge-like eating behaviors and reduced light avoidance. This study shows that the unnatural distribution of light and dark across the 24 h day can cause disruptions during early development that can reappear during adulthood when placed in the same stressful light-dark environment as adults.Dopamine (DA) neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) innervating several limbic and neocortical regions of the mammalian brain have long been implicated in motivation, rewarding and aversive behaviors, and memory processing. Recently, we demonstrated that somatodendritic release of DA in the VTA regulates the formation and maintenance of appetitive long-term memories (LTM). However, less is known about the impact of DA neurotransmission in the VTA on aversive LTM. Here, we describe the modulation of negative-valence memories by D1/D5-type DA (D1R)-receptor-mediated neurotransmission in the VTA. As aversive stimuli elicit both active and passive behavioral responses, we used two single-trial aversive training protocols inhibitory avoidance task and conditioned place aversion. We bilaterally microinfused SCH23390, an antagonist of D1R, into the VTA immediately after training and found that DA neurotransmission in the VTA modulates LTM consolidation and persistence of aversive experiences. Together with previous findings demonstrating that D1R-mediated DA neurotransmission in the medial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus is involved in the formation and persistence of LTM for aversive events, our present results indicate that memory processing of environmental stimuli with negative-valence depends on the integration of information mediated by D1R activation in both the VTA region and in selected downstream target areas.Small cell lung cancer (SCLC), originating from lung neuroendocrine stem cells, is a common pulmonary malignant tumor. SCLC, with poor prognoses, accounts for approximately 13-15% of all lung cancer cases. Due to the slow progress of clinical treatment, the 5-year survival rate of SCLC has remained below 7% for many years. In recent years, with the development and popularity of gene sequencing technologies, we were able to better grasp patterns of gene mutations and tumor evolution in SCLC. Thus, appropriate molecular subtyping strategies have been established to help predict patients' prognoses and develop the treatment regimen for SCLC more accurately. In this narrative review, we aim to summarize the evolution of mutation-based molecular subtyping of SCLC, as well as the trends in molecular targeting and immunotherapeutic for SCLC. Based on the latest sequencing data for SCLC, thereafter, we discuss therapeutic opinions of SCLC from basic to clinic. This review may provide a basis for guiding the development of subsequent individualized precision-targeted therapy for SCLC patients to improve their clinical prognoses.
