The First National Conference on New Health Practitioners was a seminal event in the development of the fledgling PA profession. Sponsored by the Association of Physician Assistant Programs and the American Academy of Physician Assistants, it was achieved by the cooperation of leaders committed to the success of the new profession. This article reveals, in a manner never before detailed, how this conference milestone was planned and what took place, and emphasizes its importance to the field. The meeting, held in April of 1973, was groundbreaking, attracting, among the 252 participants, the leadership of the American Medical Association, the National Board of Medical Examiners, the Federation of State Medical Boards, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Nurses Association, and federal agencies within the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, responsible for promoting and funding PA education, as well as PAs and PA educators. This remarkable participation, and conference program,of the conference. The other is a final financial statement from the conference organizing committee.
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which physician assistants (PAs) are educated in oral health competencies and the relationship of education to providing oral health services to patients.

The study was conducted in 2016 by administering an Internet-based survey to a nationwide sample of 2014 graduates of programs accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant. The survey response rate was 12.7% (N = 304).

More than half of the PAs who received education in oral health in their professional education programs indicated that oral health curricula were either integrated into one or several topical areas in the base curriculum or delivered in stand-alone lectures. The majority of PA respondents rated their educational preparation as good or excellent in helping them provide oral health education to their patients (54.8%), make appropriate referrals to oral health providers (53.7%), and provide preventive oral health services (51.2%), while more than 40% rated their preparation as good or excellent in helping them identify oral diseases, conditions, and intervention strategies. More than one-third (35.7%) of all PA respondents reported that they provided oral health services in their clinical practices. PAs who received instruction in oral health competencies through the PA education curriculum or from other sources were 2.82 times more likely to provide oral health assessment and screening services to their patients (95% confidence interval, 1.19-6.67). The PA respondents' provision of oral health services was also significantly associated with working in primary medicine or urgent care practice specialties but not with the work setting.

PAs educated in oral health competencies are more likely to provide such services to patients, especially in primary medicine or urgent care settings.

Health care program admission processes utilize multi-faceted approaches to evaluate cognitive and noncognitive attributes of applicants. The multiple mini-interview (MMI) was developed in response to the need for a reliable and validated tool to assess noncognitive factors and has been increasingly incorporated into the admissions process by physician assistant (PA) programs. The study's purpose was to explore the current implementation and utilization of the MMI within PA programs.

The study used a mixed-methods exploratory approach including a telephone survey and semi-structured interview of 11 PA programs using the MMI in their admissions process. Quantitative data collected included demographic information, MMI implementation characteristics, station structure, scoring, feasibility, satisfaction with MMI utilization, and MMI evaluation methods.

During the 2015-2016 admissions cycle, the participating programs used from 5 to 10 stations, averaging 7 minutes per station, requiring 8 faculty, 2 staff implementation of the MMI, our results are comparable to studies within other health care professions. Additional studies are necessary to further describe the MMI and its correlation with PA program educational outcomes and the impact on diversity.
Two years after the Florida legislature expanded APRN prescribing to include schedule II-IV drugs in 2017, we studied APRN utilization of this prescriptive authority. Study results reveal that Florida APRNs are meeting the educational requirements to prescribe and apply the use of these drugs in practice, improving patient access to care.

Using guideline-driven interventions, NPs are well suited for management of ST-segment elevation (STE)-acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This second article in a two-part series on ACS management presents an updated overview to help NPs in applying evidence-based interventions while caring for patients with STE-ACS.

Herein, a plant polyphenol tannic acid was used to etch Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) followed by calcination to prepare a porous Co3O4@Co/NC hollow nanoparticles (Co3O4@Co/NC-HN) with rich oxygen vacancy defects. Owing to the metal-phenolic networks (MPNs), rich oxygen vacancy defects and the synergistic effect between Co3O4 and Co/NC, the box-like Co3O4@Co/NC-HN nanomaterials with large specific surface areas exhibit excellent supercapacitor performance and electrocatalytic activity. As expected, Co3O4@Co/NC-HN shows high specific capacity (273.9 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1) and remarkable rate performance. Moreover, the assembled Hybrid supercapacitor (HSC, Co3O4@Co/NC-HN//Active carbon) device obtained a maximum energy density of 57.8 Wh kg-1 (800 W kg-1) and exhibited superior cycle stability of 92.6% after 4000 cycles. Notably, as an electrocatalyst, the nanocomposites exhibit small overpotential and Tafel slope. These results strongly demonstrate that both unique hollow structure and abundant oxygen vacancies designed from plant polyphenols provide superiorities for the synthesis of efficient and green multifunctional electrode materials for energy storage and conversion.Single-component absorbent with wide-band absorption and strong attenuation capability is a challenge for efficient electromagnetic wave absorption. Morphology manipulation is an effective pathway to enhance electromagnetic wave absorption. Herein, naked NiCo2O4 with novel morphology of wood-texture-column-like nanostructure was synthesized for the first time through sodium oxalate-induced hydrothermal synthesis. The electromagnetic parameters are adjusted by controlling the amount of sodium oxalate to optimize absorbing performance. The optimum absorption performance occurs when the molar ratio of sodium oxalate to metal ions is 1.5, in which the effective absorption bandwidth is up to 7.10 GHz (10.90-18 GHz) at only 2.20 mm and the minimum reflection loss is low to -49.78 dB. ASN-002 Notably, the qualified EAB can cover the entire C, X and Ku bands by adjusting the thickness from 1.7 to 5.0 mm. Excellent absorbing performance is attributed to appropriate impedance matching originating from numerous cracks and pores in nanostructures and strong dipole polarization induced dominantly by oxygen vacancy together with lattice distortion. This study provides an excellent candidate for the study of single-component electromagnetic wave absorbents. The dopamine system in the brain is involved in a variety of neurologic and psychiatric disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and psychosis. Different aspects of the dopamine system can be visualized and measured with positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), including dopamine receptors, dopamine transporters, and dopamine release. New developments in MR imaging also provide proxy measures of the dopamine system in the brain, offering alternatives with the advantages MR imaging, i.e. no radiation, lower costs, usually less invasive and time consuming. This review will give an overview of these developments with a focus on the most developed techniques pharmacological MRI (phMRI) and neuromelanin sensitive MRI (NM-MRI). PhMRI is a collective term for functional MRI techniques that administer a pharmacological challenge to assess its effects on brain hemodynamics. By doing so, it indirectly assesses brain neurotransmitter function such as dopamine function. NM-MRI is an upcoming MRI technique that enables in vivo visualization and semi-quantification of neuromelanin in the substantia nigra. Neuromelanin is located in the cell bodies of dopaminergic neurons of the nigrostriatal pathway and can be used as a proxy measure for long term dopamine function or degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. Both techniques are still primarily used in clinical research, but there is promise for clinical application, in particular for NM-MRI in dopaminergic neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease.
