We explored codonopsis mechanisms for the treatment of esophageal cancer using a network pharmacology approach.
Using the Laboratory of Systems Pharmacology website, codonopsis compounds and targets were gathered. After identifying esophageal cancer target intersections from the GeneCards website, possible codonopsis targets for esophageal cancer were screened. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network diagram of protein targets was then constructed using the STRING database. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genome (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were performed in R 3.6.0 software. A network diagram of "disease-drug-component-target-pathways" was also constructed using Cytoscape 3.7.1.
We screened 21 codonopsis compounds as possible esophageal cancer treatments and 31 drug-disease intersecting targets. GO enrichment analysis identified 778 biological process (BP) components, 15 cellular component (CC) components, and 50 molecular function (MF) components, and KEGG analyses identified 90 signaling pathways. Our analyses showed that p53 and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways (among others) were significant pathways in these processes.

Codonopsis may be used to treat esophageal cancer by multiple components, targets, and pathways.An important factor affecting the accuracy of Young's modulus calculation in Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) indentation experiments is the determination of the dimensions of the indenter. This procedure is usually performed using AFM calibration gratings or Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) imaging. However, the aforementioned procedure is frequently omitted because it requires additional equipment. In this paper, a new approach is presented that focused on the calibration of spherical indenters without the need of special equipment but instead using force indentation data on soft samples. Firstly, the question whether it is mathematically possible to simultaneously calculate the indenter's radius and the Young's modulus of the tested sample (under the restriction that the sample presents a linear elastic response) using the same force indentation data is discussed. Using a simple mathematical approach, it was proved that the aforementioned procedure is theoretically valid. In addition, to test this method in real indentation experiments agarose gels were used. Multiple measurements on different agarose gels showed that the calibration of a spherical indenter is possible and can be accurately performed. Thus, the indenter's radius and the soft sample's Young's modulus can be determined using the same force indentation data. It is also important to note that the provided accuracy is similar to the accuracy obtained when using AFM calibration gratings. The major advantage of this paper is that it provides a method for the simultaneous determination of the indenter's radius and the sample's Young's modulus without requiring any additional equipment.Adrenal cortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare, aggressive endocrine malignancy with a reported incidence of 1.0-2.0 cases per million population and a poor prognosis due to metastatic spread. About 25% of cases of ACC present with metastases at the time of diagnosis. Metastatic spread of ACC commonly involves lungs, liver, kidney, peritoneum, lymph nodes, venous extension to the renal vein or inferior vena cava and bone. We report a case of a 47-year-old male with a nonfunctioning ACC with metastases to skeletal muscle (subscapularis, paraspinal, iliacus and gluteus maximus muscle) in addition to metastasis to the lung, which was not reported in the literature. Unfortunately, the patient expired prior to the surgery due to respiratory distress.Pott's disease is a distinctive presentation of tuberculosis that occurs in approximately 5% of extrapulmonary cases that progressively developed a voluminous paravertebral abscess. To clarify the diagnosis, a chest radiograph and Mantoux test were performed and the patient was confirmed positive for lung tuberculosis. After antituberculosis drug treatment, (Isoniazid, Rifampicin, Pyrazinamide, and Ethambutol) initial phase, the patient had difficulty walking.Bronchial artery aneurysm and pseudoaneurysm is a rare but life-threatening diagnosis due to catastrophic complications from rupture. We present a case of 72-year-old woman with incidentally detected large bronchial artery pseudoaneurysm, incorrectly classified as mediastinal malignancy at outside facility, receiving follow-up exams for 2 years, before correct diagnosis and management.Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) involving the tongue is a rare and aggressive disease that is more common in middle-aged and elderly males. We report a case of a 56-year-old male who presented to our hospital with sore throat and was found to have a mass in the left root of the tongue. 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed intense FDG uptake in the mass of the tongue base, as well as different uptake of FDG in the mid-posterior mediastinal mass, right adrenal gland, and enlarged lymph nodes in the neck and mediastinum. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI clearly showed the extent of the tongue lesion, additionally suggesting the presence of brain metastases. 18F-FDG PET/MRI fusion images of the neck were obtained on the workstation, which may have a higher diagnostic value for tongue NEC. The patient underwent a biopsy of the mass in the left root of the tongue and was pathologically diagnosed with NEC. Whole-body 18F-FDG PET/CT and regional PET/MRI fusion images have complementary roles in the diagnosis of tongue NEC, and the former is mainly applied to determine the clinical stage of the disease and to guide treatment.The pathogenesis of new visual symptoms after flow diverter stent placement in the ophthalmic artery for internal carotid artery aneurysms remains unclear. We report two cases of patients who developed visual field disturbance and decreased visual acuity following flow diverter placement. The "doughnut sign" was found around the optic nerve on magnetic resonance imaging. The patients had progressive visual field defects and impairment on the side where the flow diverter was placed. Short tau inversion recovery coronal images showed a doughnut-shaped high-signal around the optic nerve on the affected side. Both patients were treated with steroid pulse therapy, and 1 received endovascular therapy. Their symptoms gradually improved, and the "doughnut sign" disappeared. The "doughnut sign" observed around the optic nerve on magnetic resonance imaging may be found alongside visual disturbance symptoms after paraclinoid aneurysm treatment. It is recommended that short tau inversion recovery sequences be performed preoperatively in patients presenting with visual impairment and in whom the possibility of postoperative exacerbation is suspected.Fenestration of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) is a rare anatomic variant, and lenticulostriate arteries (LSAs) often arise from the superior limb of the fenestrated segment. A case of acute occlusion of the superior limb of a fenestrated MCA that successfully underwent mechanical thrombectomy is presented. We describe the case of an adult male that presented with chronic subdural hematomas and was treated with burr hole craniotomy plus middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization. Although the pre-embolization angiogram showed no signs of a fistula, a fistula arising from the MMA and draining into the superior sagittal sinus emerged intra-operatively. To our knowledge, this is the first case of intra-operative emergence of occult MMA-dAVF with intracranial drainage during MMA embolization for chronic subdural hematoma treatment. This observation supports monitoring for and embolizing spontaneous MMA-dAVF following MMA embolization.Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a well-validated decompressive therapy option to manage ascites and variceal bleeding secondary to portal hypertension. Complications following TIPS procedures include hepatic encephalopathy, liver failure, and TIPS dysfunction. TIPS dysfunction is due to occlusion or stenosis of the TIPS shunt and can be caused by acute or chronic thrombosis. TIPS thrombosis is often treated with mechanical thrombectomy or catheter-directed thrombolytic therapy. Most cases of in-stent occlusion can be treated via a transjugular approach with recanalization or placement of additional stents. We present a case of a 72-year-old female who presented with worsening ascites 17 months after initial TIPS procedure; she was found to have a large thrombus completely occluding the TIPS stent. In our case, a combined transhepatic and transjugular approach was required for TIPS revision given the extent of well-organized clot located near the hepatic venous end of the stent, resulting from prolonged stent occlusion.
