To propose a generic deep learning based medical image reconstruction model (named as SpiNet) that can enforce any Schatten p-norm regularization with 0<p≤2, where the p can be learnt (or fixed) based on the problem at hand.

Model-based deep learning architecture for solving inverse problems consists of two parts, a deep learning based denoiser and an iterative data consistency solver. The former has either L2 norm or L1 norm enforced on it, which are convex and can be easily minimized. This work proposes a method to enforce any p norm on the noise prior where 0<p≤2. This is achieved by using Majorization-Minimization algorithm, which upper bounds the cost function with a convex function, thus can be easily minimized. The proposed SpiNet has the capability to work for a fixed p or it can learn p based on the data. The network was tested for solving the inverse problem of reconstructing magnetic resonance (MR) images from undersampled k space data and the results were compared with a popular model-bams MoDL in all metrices with improvement as high as 4dB in PSNR and 0.5 points in SSIM.

Multiple subsets of Tregs expressing master transcription factors of helper T cells such as RORγt, T-bet, Gata3 and PPARγ have been characterized, but the molecular mechanism governing the differentiation of these subsets remains largely unknown. Here we report that the atypical IκB protein family member Bcl-3 suppresses RORγt+ Treg accumulation. The suppressive effect of Bcl-3 was particularly evident in the mouse immune tolerance model of anti-CD3 therapy. Using conditional knockout mice, we illustrate that loss of Bcl-3 specifically in Tregs was sufficient to boost RORγt+ Treg formation and resistance of mice to dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis. We further demonstrate the suppressive effect of Bcl-3 on RORγt+ Treg differentiation in vitro. Differences in soil microbiome compositions could be attributed to soil chemical characteristics, but, generally, plant tissue microbiomes were not related to plant tissue elemental concentrations. Using source tracking modeling, we also show that fire influences the relative dominance of microbial inoculum and the vertical inheritance of the sapling microbiome from the parent tree. Overall, our results demonstrate how fire impacts plant microbiome assembly, diversity, and composition and highlights potential for further research towards increasing plant fitness and ecosystem recovery after fire events.
The utility of brain metastasis screening in asymptomatic metastatic renal cell carcinoma is controversial. Our study evaluated the utility of routine head computed tomography during systemic therapy.

We retrospectively investigated 152 metastatic renal cell carcinoma patients who did not initially have brain metastasis at Yamagata University Hospital from January 2008 to July 2019. Patients who routinely received head computed tomography scan together with routine contrast-enhanced chest/abdominal/pelvic computed tomography scan every 2-4months during systemic therapy ("Routine head computed tomography" group, n=95) and patients without routine head computed tomography ("No routine head computed tomography" group, n=57) were compared.

ET has an incidence of 0.6 to 2.5 per 100,000 per year in Europe and North America. The disease is characterized by an increased thromboembolic risk, possibly caused by increased platelet counts. Furthermore, increased platelet function and/or increased platelet turnover may play a role. We aimed to explore (1) whether platelet function and platelet turnover are increased in ET patients compared with healthy controls, and (2) whether these parameters are associated with increased thromboembolic risk and, therefore, may support decision-making on treatment in ET patients. We performed a systematic literature search on March 20, 2020 in Embase and PubMed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. In total, 1,923 articles were identified, 38 of which were included according to prespecified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Among the 38 studies, platelet activation (CD36 and CD62P) was investigated in 18 studies and was found to be increased in 12 of these. Platelet aggregation was investigated in 21 studies and was reported to be reduced in 20 of them. Platelet turnover (immature platelet count and mean platelet volume) was investigated in five studies with inconclusive results. No parameters were reported to predict the risk of thromboembolic events. In conclusion, platelet activation was increased in ET patients, but platelet aggregation was reduced. Future studies exploring markers of thromboembolic risk in ET patients are warranted.Considering the profound influence exerted by the ABO blood group system on hemostasis, mainly through the von Willebrand factor and factor VIII (FVIII) complex, we have conducted a study evaluating the possible role of blood type on the risk of inhibitor development in hemophilia A. A total of 287 consecutive Caucasian patients with severe hemophilia A (202 without FVIII inhibitors and 85 with FVIII inhibitors) followed at seven Italian Hemophilia Treatment Centers belonging to the Italian Association of Hemophilia Centers (AICE) were included in the study. A higher prevalence of O blood group was detected in patients without inhibitors as compared in inhibitor patients (55 vs. 30.6%; p  less then  0.001). Among the other variables analyzed (age, F8 mutation, type and intensity of treatment and treatment regimen), F8 mutation class (high-risk vs. low-risk), and treatment regimen (on-demand vs. prophylaxis) were significantly correlated with inhibitor development. However, on a multivariate analysis, only the effects of F8 mutation and ABO blood type were independent of other covariates, being that non-O blood type is associated with a 2.89-fold increased risk of inhibitor development. In conclusion, our study supports the protective effect of O blood type on inhibitor risk in severely affected hemophilia A patients.This study aimed to determine the impact of major hemorrhage (MH) protocol (MHP) activation on blood administration and patient outcome at a UK major cardiothoracic center. MH was defined in patients (> 16 years) as those who received > 5 units of red blood cells (RBCs) in  10 units in 24 hours. Data were collected retrospectively from patient electronic records and hospital transfusion databases recording issue of blood products from January 2016 to December 2018. Of 134 patients with MH, 24 had activated MHP and 110 did not have activated MHP. Groups were similar for age, sex, baseline hemoglobin, platelet count, coagulation screen, and renal function with no difference in the baseline clinical characteristics. The total number of red cell units (median and [IQR]) transfused was no different in the patients with activated (7.5 [5-11.75]) versus nonactivated (9 [6-12]) MHP (p = 0.35). Patients in the nonactivated MHP group received significantly higher number of platelet units (median 3 vs. 2, p = 0.014), ply contribute to mortality, but higher fibrinogen at baseline was not protective.
 Splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT) is a common complication in patients with liver cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of anticoagulant therapy for SVT in cirrhotic patients.

 In this systematic review and meta-analysis, studies reporting on SVT recanalization and progression, recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE), major bleeding, and overall mortality were searched in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and ClinicalTrial.gov up to December 2019. Pooled proportions and risk ratios (RRs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated.

 A total of 1,475 patients were included in 26 studies (23 observational and 3 randomized controlled trials). In patients receiving anticoagulant therapy, SVT recanalization occurred in 68% (95% CI, 62-74; 571/842 patients; 22 studies), SVT progression in 6% (95% CI, 4-9; 25/748 patients; 22 studies), recurrent VTE in 10% (95% CI, 4-22; 48/399 patients; 7 studies), major bleeding in 6% (95% CI, 4-10; 58/785 patients; 18 studies), and overall mortality in 9% (95% CI, 6-14; 68/787 patients; 17 studies).
