Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during the recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

It was the first time in 31 years that all of Toto's founding members were on stage together. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
