The objective of the present work was to evaluate the chemical and morphological changes of femtosecond laser-irradiated enamel with subablative parameters using Raman spectroscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Bovine incisor teeth were used to obtain 30 enamel specimens (5 × 5 mm2 ). The chemical composition of the control sample was analyzed by Raman spectrometry to acquire the absorption spectrum, delimiting the areas under the carbonate and phosphate bands. This analysis was used to evaluate the change in the chemical composition of the sample after irradiation. The specimens were irradiated (IRR) with a TiSapphire laser system (pulsed and focused modes, femtosecond regime 70 fs, average power of 1 W and exposure time of 15 s). After irradiation, the areas under the carbonate and phosphate absorption bands were delimited in each specimen. Raman spectrometry data were analyzed using Student's t-test (α = 5%). By comparing the spectra of the IRR and non-irradiated (NI) specimens, the results showed a significant increase in the area value for the phosphate peaks and a significant reduction in the area value for the carbonate peak and the carbonatephosphate ratio. CLSM and SEM analyses did not reveal structural alterations in the subsurface nor morphological alterations in the IRR enamel surface, respectively. It was concluded that femtosecond laser irradiation using subablative parameters reduced the carbonate content and the carbonate/phosphate ratio without altering the structure and morphology of the dental enamel.Ghrelin is a gastric-derived peptide hormone with demonstrated impact on alcohol intake and craving, but the reverse side of this bidirectional link, that is, the effects of alcohol on the ghrelin system, remains to be fully established. To further characterize this relationship, we examined (1) ghrelin levels via secondary analysis of human laboratory alcohol administration experiments with heavy-drinking participants; (2) expression of ghrelin, ghrelin receptor, and ghrelin-O-acyltransferase (GOAT) genes (GHRL, GHSR, and MBOAT4, respectively) in post-mortem brain tissue from individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) versus controls; (3) ghrelin levels in Ghsr knockout and wild-type rats following intraperitoneal (i.p.) alcohol administration; (4) effect of alcohol on ghrelin secretion from gastric mucosa cells ex vivo and GOAT enzymatic activity in vitro; and (5) ghrelin levels in rats following i.p. alcohol administration versus a calorically equivalent non-alcoholic sucrose solution. Acyl- and total-ghrelin levels decreased following acute alcohol administration in humans, but AUD was not associated with changes in central expression of ghrelin system genes in post-mortem tissue. In rats, alcohol decreased acyl-ghrelin, but not des-acyl-ghrelin, in both Ghsr knockout and wild-type rats. No dose-dependent effects of alcohol were observed on acyl-ghrelin secretion from gastric mucosa cells or on GOAT acylation activity. Lastly, alcohol and sucrose produced distinct effects on ghrelin in rats despite equivalent caloric value. Our findings suggest that alcohol acutely decreases peripheral ghrelin concentrations in vivo, but not in proportion to alcohol's caloric value or through direct interaction with ghrelin-secreting gastric mucosal cells, the ghrelin receptor, or the GOAT enzyme.
This retrospective study aimed to determine the effectiveness of sacral neuromodulation (SNM) on neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) and analyze the predictive factors.

From January 2012 to January 2020, 152 subjects with NLUTD from four medical centers in China received SNM test stimulation. Subjects were assessed via bladder diaries, postvoid residual volumes (PRVs) and neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) scores before and during the testing period. Patients who showed a minimum 50% improvement in symptoms through the SNM test phase were eligible for permanent SNM implantation.

The pooled success rate for chronic urinary retention was 31.0% (40/129), which was significantly lower (p < 0.05) than the rates for frequency-urgency (64.8%, 59/91), urinary incontinence (65.2%, 30/46), and NBD score (61.7%, 82/133). The results of the risk factor analysis showed that the urinary storage symptom was a statistically significant positive predictor (p = 0.001).

In conclusion, SNM is an effective and reliable method for treating NLUTD, especially in patients with urinary storage symptoms. Although not all of the symptoms in every patient can be resolve, SNM still might be a superior choice together with other treatment procedures.

Ten birds were included in the study. The obtained findings revealed that three parts in the small intestine namely duodenum, jejunum, and ilium constituted of four layers from innermost to outermost including tunica mucosa, tunica submucosa, tunica muscularis, and tunica serosa. All parts of the small intestine had simple columnar epithelium with goblet cells reacted with Periodic Acid-Schiff and Alcian Blue stains especially in the jejunum and ileum. The cells on the tip of the duodenal villi showed immuno-positive staining for Sox9 protein, while the jejunum and ileum were negative. The jejunum had longest villi; however the duodenum had deepest crypt (p less then  .05). The villus surface of jejunum was significantly higher than duodenum and ileum (p less then  .05). SEM images revealed that the duodenum had cauliflower and leaf-like villi with plicas and recess between them. Jejunum had finger-like villi with a velvety view. The shape of the ileal villi was like that observed in the jejunum with slight differences. In conclusion, the jejunum was the most prominent region in the small intestine in terms of morphologic and morphometric features, which could be attributed to the absorption of more nutrients in this area. These obtained findings would be useful to improve the knowledge in the field of histophysiology properties of the bird's digestive system.Biofilm formation in bacteria is strongly affected by the nature of substrata. Different substrata such as glass, polystyrene, steel, ceramic, and rubber were used to assess the biofilm forming ability of a marine bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa PFL-P1 using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), and confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). The bacterium formed dense biofilms with varied aggregation on different substrata. SEM study revealed small rod-shaped cells with diverse arrangements within the biofilms on all the substrata under study. The AFM study revealed the highest roughness of 545 nm on the ceramic substratum. The biofilms formed on ceramic substratum were characterized with maximum roughness (742 nm), maximum peak height (1,480 nm), and maximum arithmetic mean height (611 nm), significantly higher than all the other substrata (p  less then  .05). AFM studies confirmed that P. aeruginosa PFL-P1 exhibited biofilm heterogeneity on all the substrata. The CLSM study indicated a higher fraction of nucleic acids to α-polysaccharides ratio in the biofilms. COMSTAT analysis revealed the highest biofilm biomass of ~18 μm3 /μm2 on the ceramic substratum. The maximum biofilm thickness of ~50 μm in the native state on the ceramic substratum was significantly higher than glass (p = .0015), polystyrene (p = .0001), steel (p = .0035), and rubber substrata (p = .0001). The higher surface roughness of ceramic substratum is accountable for more area for colonization, as evident from higher biomass and thickness of the biofilm. This study provides insight into the substratum properties, which modulate the biofilm forming ability in bacteria.
To evaluate the effect of zoledronic acid (ZA) on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) attached to different surfaces.

A total of three groups were evaluated in this study sandblasting and acid etching (SLA) + HUVECs; mechanically polished (MP) + HUVECs; and plastic cell culture plates + HUVECs. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, surface roughness and water contact angle were tested for titanium surface characterisation. ZA was added at different concentrations (0, 1, 10, 50 and 100μM). Cell adhesion, proliferation, viability, apoptosis and gene expression were evaluated.

Mechanically polished and SLA surfaces showed negative effects on cell adhesion and proliferation and promoted cell apoptosis with 100μM ZA (p<.05). The highest expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and angiopoietin-1 was found on SLA surfaces (p<.01). The lowest expression of platelet-endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 and ICAM-1 was found on MP surfaces (p<.05). A significant decrease in von Willebrand factor was detected on MP and SLA surfaces (p<.001).
