What is Pragmatics?

William James characterized pragmatism as a new name for old methods of thinking in 1907 during his series of lectures entitled "Pragmatism: A New Name for Some old ways of thinking." He began by defining the 'The Present Dilemma in Philosophy'--a fundamental and seemingly intractable conflict between two approaches to thinking, the empiricist with a tough-minded commitment to experience and going through the facts, versus the soft-hearted preference for a priori principles that appeal to rationalization. He said that pragmatism could help bridge this gap.

He defined 'praxy an idea or truth that is rooted not in a idealized theory, but in the actuality of our world. He argued that the pragmatism approach was the most natural and true method of solving human problems. All other philosophical approaches He said, were ineffective.

During the 1900s, other philosophers developed pragmatist ideas, including George Herbert Mead, W.E.B Du Bois, and Alain Locke. Presently, pragmatism is influencing the design of educational programs, curriculums and other technological and scientific applications.
