In this prospective pilot study, olfaction (University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test [UPSIT]), bowel symptoms (ROME III questionnaires, daily bowel diaries, 100mm visual analog scales for satisfaction with treatment and bowel habits), and motor manifestations of PD were evaluated before and after STN-DBS. Levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD) was calculated.

Ten patients (8 men, mean age 67.4±6.0 years) with mean PD duration of 7.5±3.7 years underwent bilateral STN-DBS, with mean follow-up of 3 months for all measures, except 7 months follow-up for bowel diaries. There was improvement in the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale motor "off" scores (33.7±6.7 before and 16.1±10.8 after, P=0.001). Mean UPSIT scores (20.0±6.6 versus 17.5±5.7, P=0.03) worsened from severe to total hyposmia. Seven patients had baseline constipation and completed bowel diaries. There was improvement in number of complete spontaneous bowel motions (CBSM) per week (2.2±1.9 before versus 4.7±2.4 after, P=0.04), satisfaction with treatment of constipation (44±27 before versus 64±25 after, P=0.02), and with bowel motions (33±22 before and 48±20 after, P=0.2). However, laxative use (P=0.15) and LEDD (P=0.15) were unchanged.

Rhabdoid Meningiomas (RM) are rare malignant type of meningiomas, classified as grade III in the WHO classification. Only a few case series have been reported, and factors affecting prognosis are still unclear.

We did a retrospective chart review of all the RMs diagnosed in our institute between 2007 and 2019. Demographic profile, clinical status, imaging, surgical procedures used, post-operative course, adjuvant therapy and follow-ups were reviewed. Histopathological slides were also reviewed.

There were 11 patients with RM who underwent 17 surgical procedures between them. Median age was 26 years. On imaging, four had lesions in skull base, three in convexity and four in parasagittal region. Five patients had lesions which had bled and two had leptomeningeal dissemination. Two patients underwent Simpson's grade 1 excision, seven underwent grade 2 and one patient each underwent grade 3 and 5 excisions. One patient presented with poor sensorium and underwent surgery but ultimately succumbed. selleck inhibitor All reported patients had Rhabdoid features (>50%). Features of anaplasia were seen in four cases and atypical meningioma in others. The median progression-free-survival and overall survival was 6 months and 9 months, respectively. Golden standard of acute stroke treatment is recanalisation therapy. However, opening the occluded blood vessel sometimes does not show the expected clinical result or leads to haemorrhagic complications. As neuroinflammation and neurotoxicity play an important role in the pathophysiology of stroke, neuroprotective agents might preserve brain tissue after futile recanalisation.

After recanalisation therapy and not later than 24h after symptoms onset, patients with initial NIHSS of ≥8 were assigned to the investigational and control group. The investigational group received intravenous Cerebrolysin as add-on therapy. The primary objective was to assess the clinical efficacy of Cerebrolysin. The secondary objective was to investigate its effect on haemorrhagic transition and to confirm its safety profile.

Baseline characteristics of patients showed no significant differences between the two groups. No difference could be detected between the two groups in the mRS scale though the Cerebrolysin group showed descriptive superiority over the control group. We found a statistically significant difference considering haemorrhagic transition and mortality rate in favour of the Cerebrolysin group.

The multimodal neurotrophic agent Cerebrolysin holds promise to impact on the late consequences of a reperfusion syndrome. Its influence on reducing neuroinflammation, promoting neuronal cell viability and neurogenesis as well as the stabilising effect on the blood-brain barrier suggests a protective effect on the neurovascular unit even when no recanalisation occurs. We confirmed the excellent safety profile of Cerebrolysin.

We studied the proposal to modify the ABC/2 formula to ABC/3 for irregular-shaped intracerebral hematoma (ICH) volume estimation.

The volume of 133 ICHs were estimated with Kwak's (simplified C; all slices with hemorrhage are considered equal), Kothari's (weighted C) and coronal (reformatted C; measuring C directly on coronal reformatted images) ABC/2 methods, and compared with computer-assisted planimetric measurements. The accuracy, precision and correlation of three ABC/2 methods and their ABC/3 modifications were determined in smooth (Barras' group 1 or 2) and irregular (Barras' group 3-5) shaped ICHs.

As the hematoma size increases, the shape becomes irregular. In all hematomas, both smooth (n=81) and irregular (n=52) shaped, Kothari's ABC/2 formula provided the closest result to the planimetric measurement, with an underestimation of 1.77mL, and 10.2% difference on average. Kothari's ABC/2 disclosed the best correlation (Lin's coefficient=0.9622) regardless of ICH shape. When simplified-ABC/2 method was modified as ABC/3, volume estimation accuracy increased (Correlation coefficient increased from 0.838 to 0.915) for irregular hematomas; however, despite this improvement the accuracy remained below the Kothari's ABC/2 (not ABC/3) method. Neither reformatted coronal ABC/2 nor its ABC/3 modification provided any advantage over ABC/x formulas with slice counting.

Ten healthy males attended two gait analysis sessions, in which they walked at a self-selected pace, while a 10-camera motion capture system recorded lower limb kinematics. Hip, knee and ankle joint kinematics in all three anatomical planes were calculated using a modified CGM, with medial anatomical markers and a three-dimensional foot added, and 6DoF. Mean absolute differences were calculated on a point-by-point basis over the walking gait cycle and interpreted relative to a 5° threshold to explore the comparability of model outputs. Medically unexplained fatigue is a burdensome, widespread symptom, and a frequent complaint in depressive disorders (DDs) as well as somatic symptom disorder (SSD). Heightened stress levels are a likely cause of fatigue, although the temporal associations, as well as the role of the stress-reactive hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, are not yet completely understood. We were interested in the differences between DD and SSD regarding general, mental, and physical fatigue, as well as associations between psychobiological stress measures (representing different time frames) and fatigue in these groups.

Fifty-eight women (29 with DD, 29 with SSD) reported subjective recent fatigue and chronic stress levels, as well as levels of depression and somatic complaints using baseline questionnaires. In the current study, we examine dyadic adrenocortical attunement during a guided conversation in which two new acquaintances (N = 140 people, 70 dyads), who were university students or adults in the community, answered questions about themselves. Dyads were randomly assigned to answer questions designed to elicit dyad members to reveal a high or low amount of personal information (i.e., to self-disclose at high or low levels). We collected saliva samples (assayed for cortisol) before and after the conversation, and we coded behavioral self-disclosure-the extent to which people revealed their thoughts, feelings, and facts about themselves-during the conversation. As expected, dyads who were assigned to ask and answer high self-disclosure questions disclosed more than those assigned to ask and answer low self-disclosure questions. In addition, greater self-disclosure during the conversation was associated with greater similarity in cortisol change-that is, dyad members who revealed more about themselves experienced more similar cortisol changes in response to their conversation. This work reveals one social process through which adrenocortical attunement occurs during early relationship formation, and, in doing so, describes how our physiological functioning is linked to those around us-even people we have just met.
