In recent years, milestone deep learning models with unprecedented low error rates and high computational efficiency have shown remarkable performance for lesion detection, classification, and segmentation tasks. However, the growing field of AI has significant implications for radiology that are not limited to visual tasks. These are essential applications for optimizing imaging workflows and improving noninterpretive tasks. This article offers an overview of the recent literature on AI, focusing on the musculoskeletal imaging chain, including initial patient scheduling, optimized protocoling, magnetic resonance imaging reconstruction, image enhancement, medical image-to-image translation, and AI-aided image interpretation. The substantial developments of advanced algorithms, the emergence of massive quantities of medical data, and the interest of researchers and clinicians reveal the potential for the growing applications of AI to augment the day-to-day efficiency of musculoskeletal radiologists.
We aimed to determine the incidence and prediction nomogram for new-onset metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a middle-aged Vietnamese population.

A population-based prospective study was conducted in 1150 participants aged 40-64 years without MetS at baseline and followed-up for 5 years. Data on lifestyle factors, socioeconomic status, family diabetes history, and anthropometric measures were collected. MetS incidence was estimated in general population and subgroup of age, gender, and MetS components. A Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for MetS. A prediction nomogram was developed and checked for discrimination and calibration.

During median follow-up of 5.14 years, the accumulate MetS incidence rate was 23.4% (95% CI 22.2-24.7). The annual incidence rate (95% CI) was 52.9 (46.7-60.1) per 1000 person-years in general population and higher in women [56.6 (48.7-65.9)] than men [46.5 (36.9-59.3)]. The HRs (95% CI) for developing MetS were gender [females vs males 2.04 (1.26-3.29)], advanced age [1.02 (1.01-1.04) per one year], waist circumference [1.08 (1.06-1.10) per one cm] and other obesity-related traits, and systolic blood pressure [1.02 (1.01-1.03) per one mmHg]. The prediction nomogram for MetS had a good discrimination (C-statistics = 0.742) and fit calibration (mean absolute error = 0.009) with a positive net benefit in the predicted probability thresholds between 0.13 and 0.70.

The study is the first to indicate an alarmingly high incidence of MetS in a middle-aged population in Vietnam. The nomogram with simply applicable variables would be useful to qualify individual risk of developing MetS.

Internal jugular vein catheterization (IJVC) and subclavian vein catheterization (SCVC) have been the most preferred central venous catheterizations (CVC) clinically. Individual preference and institutional routine dominate the traditional CVC choice; however, it is lack of high-level evidence. We sought to provide better clinical strategy for CVC site choice based on anatomical landmark technique between IJVC and SCVC.

We systematically reviewed eligible studies from PubMed, OVID, Cochrane and ClinicalTrials.Gov till February 2020. The primary outcomes were catheterization time and overall success rate, and the secondary outcomes were the first-attempt success rate and the instant mechanical complications. Ethical problems are not applicable.

A total of 3378 patients from 7 studies were included in the analyses. Neither difference was found on the catheterization time (SMD 95% CI -0.095-0.124, p = 0.792), nor any difference on the overall success rate (RR = 1.017, 95% CI 0.927-1.117, p = 0.721, I
= 89.6%) between the 2 procedures. However, subgroup analyses showed overall success rate of IJVC was significantly lower than that of SCVC (RR = 0.906, 95% CI 0.850-0.965, p = 0.002) in adults. The first-attempt success rate of IJVC group was higher in the adults (RR = 1.472, 95% CI 1.004-2.156, p = 0.047). No significance was detected in arterial injury (RR = 1.137, 95% CI 0.541-2.387, p = 0.735) and pneumothorax (RR = 0.600, 95% CI 0.32-1.126, p = 0.112) between the two procedures. Hematoma was significantly more in IJVC group than that in SCVC group (RR = 2.824, 95% CI 1.181-6.751, p = 0.02).

Compared with IJVC, SCVC shows a higher overall success rate while a lower first-attempt success rate in adults, and has involved with less hematoma.

This longitudinal study aimed to investigate morphologically and quantitatively the progression of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and replica models.

The samples examined comprised sets of replicas annually obtained from 83 lesions in 16 participants over 3 to 5years. All lesions were visually categorized as wedge-shaped, saucer-shaped, or mixed-shaped lesions. CLSM images of the replicas were analyzed in terms of axial depth, occlusogingival width (height) in the buccolingual cross-section, and estimated volume using a custom code of the image analysis software to estimate the progression of the NCCLs over time. 3-MA molecular weight The morphological characteristics of the NCCLs were also objectively divided into three groups according to the depth to height ratio (D/H ratio). Fisher's exact test and the Cochran-Armitage trend test were used for statistical analysis.

Saucer-shaped lesions progressed mainly in height, whereas wedge-shaped lesions increased both in height and depth. link2 Annual progression in depth and volume significantly increased as the D/H ratio increased. More than half of the NCCLs with a small D/H ratio progressed 50μm or more in height, whereas none of them progressed more than 50μm in depth. Annual progression in depth significantly increased as the lesion depth at baseline increased.

Progression patterns significantly differed between NCCLs of different shapes. Most NCCLs progressed slowly in depth regardless of their shape. Moreover, NCCLs may progress through active and inactive stages.

Forest species changes have direct impacts on carbon stocks and may lead to undesirable climate trade-offs. In this paper, we measure aboveground biomass (AGB) and the impact of forest changes on climate regulation through three land policy scenarios by 2030 in continental Portugal. We found that a High intervention scenario, supported by an important increase in "Other coniferous trees" class, will provide 29.5% more of carbon sequestration, whereas a Low intervention scenario, in which there is a moderate increase in all forest classes, will result in an increase of 5.7%. A business as usual (BAU) scenario, supported by an increase in eucalyptus forests and a decrease in autochthonous species, will decrease carbon sequestration (-2.7%), particularly Lisboa, Algarve and North regions. Economic valuation shows that the High intervention scenario will generate the highest economic outcome for climate regulation by 2030. This study provides a spatial-based methodology for monitoring carbon sequestration and new insights about the impact of policies for Green House Gas (GHG) mitigation, supporting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals achievement.Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory, autoimmune demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system (CNS), leading to progressive functional impairments, and many intrinsic and acquired factors are believed to be associated with its development and relapse. In terms of environmental factors, air pollution has gained much attention during recent decades, as chronic exposure to ambient air pollution seems to increase the level of some pro-inflammatory markers in the human brain, which can lead to neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, and blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown. These events may also be associated with the risk of MS development and relapse. In this review, we aimed to summarize recent findings around the impact of air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, and ultra-fine particles), gaseous pollutants (carbon monoxide [CO], nitrogen oxides [NOx], sulfur dioxide [SO2], and ozone [O3]), and heavy metals, on MS development and relapse. As one of the world's megadiverse countries, Australian biodiversity is vital for global biodiversity. Nematodes belonging to the genus Anisakis (family Anisakidae) are an important part of this biodiversity due to their ability to be repeatedly transmitted among their intermediate hosts before reaching the top of the food pyramid. Therefore, they have a significant impact on the community structures of various ecosystems. In addition, globally, they are known to be of medical and veterinary significance. The aim of this article is to provide an update on the current knowledge about these important parasites in Australia. Since 1916, a total of 234 records of Anisakis spp. from various hosts and localities have been found in Australia. It is estimated that the occurrence of Anisakis spp. and their health impacts in at least 84, 98.5, and 95% of Australian marine mammals, fish, and water birds, respectively, have not been documented yet. The results of this study suggest Australia is perhaps home to the most ds is especially important for resolving biological diversity around Australia; however, opportunities to formally train in parasite taxonomy are rare and diminishing. There is a need to train researchers with taxonomy skills. (iv) Given the vast range of biodiversity in Australia and the broad host-specificity of Anisakis spp., particularly in the larval stages, the full range of their intermediate hosts remains unknown. (v) The health impacts of the infection of the intermediate/definitive hosts with Anisakis spp. are not fully understood. Thus, one of the important areas for future studies is investigating the pathogenicity of Anisakis spp. in affected animals. This is a crucial yet unknown factor for the conservation of some endangered species in Australia.Human cystic echinococcosis is a zoonosis due to the flat worm Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. The disease remains a major public health problem in Northern Africa. Molecular typing enables a better understanding of the parasite circulation from animals to humans. In this study, we investigated the genotypic diversity of 46 Echinococcus granulosus isolates collected from humans in the western part of Algeria by the mean of partial sequences of 4 mitochondrial loci, namely cox1a, cox1b, nd3, and atp6. Nucleotide polymorphism ranges from 0.6 (nd3) to 2.7% (cox1a). Eight alleles had not been previously reported. Multilocus analysis showed that all the isolates were from the Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (G1 genotype). Nineteen different haplotypes made of the concatenation of 4 sequenced loci were observed, the most common type clustering 13 isolates (36.1%). Twelve of these haplotypes had never been described previously and fifteen (41.7%) haplotypes were represented by only one isolate. Using sequences from this study and others retrieved from the GenBank database, any clustering either according to the geographic origin within Algeria or according to the human or animal origin of the isolates could be demonstrated supporting that genotype G1 population genetics has been shaped by intensive animal breeding.
