Students must choose one documentary from those screened or discussed in class to study in depth.
The essay should address at least:
• The content, the subject of the documentary
• Describe the underlying narrative structure
• Outline the main sections of the documentary and how the main sections/themes work as part of the narrative structure
• The type of documentary – e.g. how does the documentary represent its’ subject; how are people used/represented
• Identify and assess camera/shooting style. editing style, use of sound, sound/image relationship. directorial point of view.
• The production context – e.g. director, producer, main crew, source of finance, production company, country and date of production. This should include the CV of the director – is it a first film or does the documentary studied fit into a body of work by one person
• Evidence through reference and comparison of wider viewing of documentaries in the same genre.
• The wider context of the documentary within society, history and its political point of view.
Assessment Criteria: Essay
1. Clarity and thoroughness of the research and analysis
2. Evidence of wider viewing and reading to assist your analysis
3. Understanding of how your chosen documentary functions
4. Appropriate references and demonstration of a clear relationship between
your case study and the reading and viewing you offer in your
bibliography/filmography.
5. Correct spelling and grammar and appropriate layout.
