This is reflected in the fact that pragmatists, such as Brandom (who is owed an obligation to Peirce and James) are generally silent on questions of metaphysics in Dewey's vast writings, whereas his works contain only one mention of the question of truth.

Purpose

Pragmatism aims to provide an alternative to the analytic and continental tradition of philosophy. Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and their Harvard colleague Josiah Royce (1860-1916) were the first to initiate its first generation. The classical pragmatists were focused on theorizing inquiry, meaning and the nature of truth. Their influence was felt by a number of influential American thinkers, including John Dewey (1859-1952), who applied these ideas to education and other dimensions of social improvement, and Jane Addams (1860-1935) who established social work.

In recent times the new generation has given pragmatism a wider debate platform. Many of these neopragmatists not traditional pragmatists, but they believe that they belong to the same tradition. Robert Brandom is their main persona. He focuses his research on semantics and philosophy of language, but draws from the philosophy of Peirce, James, and others.

One of the major distinctions between the classical pragmatists and neo-pragmatists is their understanding of what it means for an idea to be true. The classical pragmatists focused on a concept called 'truth-functionality,' which states that an idea is genuinely true if it is useful in practice. Neo-pragmatists, on the other hand, concentrate on the concept of 'ideal warranted assertibility,' which says that an idea is genuinely true if a claim made about it is justified in a particular way to a particular audience.


This idea has its flaws. A common criticism is that it can be used to justify all kinds of absurd and illogical theories. A simple example is the gremlin hypothesis: It is a genuinely useful idea, it works in practice, but it is totally unsubstantiated and most likely absurd. This is not a major issue, but it does highlight one of the main problems with pragmatism. It can be used as a reason for almost everything.

Significance

Pragmatic means practical, relating to the consideration of actual world conditions and circumstances when making decisions. It is also used to refer to a philosophical perspective that focuses on the practical consequences when determining meaning, truth or values. The term pragmatism was first used to describe this view around a century ago when William James (1842-1910) pressed it into practice in a speech at the University of California (Berkeley). James confidently claimed that the word was invented by his friend and mentor Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914), but the pragmatist outlook quickly earned a name of its own.

The pragmatists resisted the sharp dichotomies in analytic philosophy like mind and body, thoughts and experience and analytic and synthesthetic. They also rebuffed the idea of truth as something that is fixed or objective and instead saw it as a constantly evolving socially-determined idea.

Classical pragmatists focused primarily on theorizing inquiry, meaning and the nature of truth though James put these themes to work in examining truth in religion. John Dewey (1859-1952) was an influential figure on a second generation of pragmatists who applied the method to education, politics and other aspects of social improvement.

The neo-pragmatists of recent decades have made an effort to place pragmatism in a broader Western philosophical context, by tracing the affinities of Peirce's ideas with Kant and other 19th century idealists as well as the emergence of the science of evolutionary theory. They also have sought to clarify the role of truth in a traditional epistemology of a posteriori and to formulate a metaphilosophy that is pragmatic and includes the concept of language, meaning and the nature of knowledge.

Yet, pragmatism continues to develop, and the a posteriori epistemology it developed is still regarded as a significant departure from more traditional approaches. The pragmatic theory has been criticized for a long time, but in recent years it has received more attention. This includes the notion that pragmatism simply implodes when applied to moral issues, and that its claim that "what is effective" is little more than relativism, albeit with a less-polished appearance.
