N-doped carbons were obtained from bamboo shoot shell via hydrothermal pretreatment under salt assistance followed by carbonization, using melamine as nitrogen source. The carbons with tubular morphology and surface areas in 406-489 m2/g range were used as adsorbents for the removal of methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB). Adsorption isotherms and kinetic fitting showed much better accordance with Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order, showing balanced capacity (qe) of 50 mg/g for MO and 42 mg/g for RhB on the pristine carbons (BHC-800) at 25 °C. After N-doping treatment, carbons (BSC-M20) had qe of MO and RhB up to 140 and 100 mg/g, respectively, confirming a positive effect of N-doping on the enhancement of dyes removal. The findings indicated that hydrothermal treatment followed by carbonization was efficient to obtain N-doped carbons from biomass materials, and the present BSS-derived carbons were promising adsorbents for organic dyes removal from water. Economic assessment of bio-flocculant production process has been carried out by SuperPro Designer where extracellular-polymeric substances (EPS) were produced using activated sludge fortified with crude glycerol in fermenter followed by centrifugation. Considering EPS concentration of 60 g/L in production fermenter at 96 h, the unit production cost for slime EPS was estimated to be $ 0.95/L. The unit price of S-EPS was sensitive to inoculum size and EPS productivity (EPS concentration and fermentation time) in the fermented broth. Economic analysis was also conducted for EPS aided leachate treatment. The unit leachate treatment cost was 7.78 $/m3 and was sensitive to S-EPS unit production cost. To get same leachate treatment cost as current industrial practice (4 $/m3), S-EPS unit production cost should lower down to $ 0.5/L. The process has several advantages 1) sludge and crude glycerol valorization for bio-flocculant production 2) Leachate treatment using environment friendly bio-flocculant. A flexible, thin-film carbon electrode is reported for detection of the key neurotransmitter dopamine using standard electroanalytical techniques of cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. The thin-film electrode has been explored as a possible low-cost solution to detect low concentrations of dopamine and its performance has been compared with a commercially available screen printed carbon electrode. It was found that the thin-film electrode is more sensitive than the screen printed electrode, and can faithfully detect dopamine between 50 pM and 1 mM concentrations. The electrode provides a limit of detection of ~50 pM, displays good selectivity between dopamine and ascorbic acid, and is able to show a level of differentiation between the two compounds in terms of peak currents as well as oxidative potentials at physiologically relevant concentrations. This is in contrast to the screen printed electrode which is unable to discriminate between dopamine and ascorbic acid at the same concentrations. The key advantages of the presented electrode system are its low-cost, flexible substrate, and the ability to achieve very low levels of dopamine detection without requiring any electrode surface modification steps, a key factor in reducing fabrication costs and overall device complexity. OBJECTIVES Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at a high risk of future autonomic dysfunction and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a 12-month lifestyle intervention (LI) involving regular aerobic exercise on cardiac autonomic function in CKD patients. DESIGN Pooled exploratory analysis. METHODS 113 eligible patients with stage 3-4 CKD (eGFR 25-60 ml/min/1.75m2) participated in a LI program, including an 8-week individualised gym-based exercise program followed by a 10-month home-based program. The control (CON) group underwent standard nephrological care. The following parameters were assessed prior to and following the 12-month study period cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2peak) from a graded exercise test; cardiac autonomic function from time, frequency, and non-linear measures of heart rate variability (HRV), heart rate (HR) recovery following peak exercise, and chronotropic competence during exercise. RESULTS Compared to the CON group, the LI group significantly increased VO2peak (CON = -1.0 vs. LI = +1.8 ml/kg/min, p less then 0.01) while there was no significant improvement in any HRV measure (p = 0.85), HR recovery (p = 0.38) or chronotropic competence (p = 0.28). Changes in relative VO2peak were significantly associated with changes in a non-linear HRV measure, α1 (p less then 0.01), independent of age and eGFR (r2 = 0.196, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Despite the significant increase in cardiorespiratory fitness for the LI group, there were no changes in cardiac autonomic function. However, α1 may be a sensitive measure to assess VO2peak changes in this clinical cohort. Further research is required to investigate the role of different modalities of exercise training to enhance cardiac autonomic function in patients with CKD. INTRODUCTION Tumor- or treatment- induced thrombocytopenia in solid cancer patients is common. In the postoperative setting, diagnosis of thrombocytopenia become more complex as infection, sepsis, drugs and transfusion come also into the equation. PRESENTATION OF CASE Herein, the case an otherwise-healthy 71-year-old male patient with a sizable recurrent malignant retroperitoneal tumor under pazopanib admitted with colon perforation and submitted to emergency left colectomy with end transverse colostomy is presented. Immediate postoperative period characterized by massive primary tumor growth and isolated acute severe thrombocytopenia. The patient treated with combined prednisone, IVIg and platelets transfusion along with medication discontinuation with no response. DISCUSSION Sepsis-, drug- and heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, disseminated intravascular coagulopathy and secondary (sepsis-, drug-, transfusion- or tumor-induced) immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) were included in the differential diagnosis. Batimastat Based on exclusion, secondary drug- or tumor-induced ITP was the most prominent diagnosis.
