vel and hypertension. Hs-CRP has statistically significant associations between alcohol use, dementia, white blood cell count, and HDL levels. Promising but not statistically significant correlations were observed between hs-CRP and statin therapy, hypothyroidism, coronary artery disease, and cerebrovascular disease.Chitosan hydrolysis by chitosanase is one of the most effective methods to produce chitosan oligosaccharides. One of the prerequisites of enzyme fermentation production is to select and breed enzyme-producing cells with good performance. So in the process of fermentation production, the low yield of chitosanase cannot meet the current requirement. In this paper, a strain producing chitosanase was screened and identified, and a novel mutagenesis system (Atmospheric and Room Temperature Plasma (ARTP)) was selected to increase the yield of chitosanase. Then, the fermentation medium was optimized to further improve the enzyme activity of the strain. JAK inhibitor A strain of Bacillus cereus capable of producing chitosanase was screened and identified from soil samples. A mutant strain of B.cereus was obtained by Atmospheric and Room Temperature Plasma mutagenesis and bioscreening method, and chitosanase activity was 2.49 folds that of the original bacterium. After an optimized fermentation medium, the enzyme activity of the mutant strain was 1.47 folds that of the original bacterium. Combined with all the above optimization experiments, the enzyme activity of mutant strain increased by 3.66 times. The results showed that the Atmospheric and Room Temperature Plasma mutagenesis and bioscreening method could significantly increase the yield of chitosanase in B.cereus, and had little effect on the properties of the enzyme. These findings have potential applications in the mutagenesis of other enzyme-producing microorganisms.Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) can be made radiopaque for medical imaging applications through the diffusion of an iodised oil-based contrast agent (Lipiodol Ultra Fluid). A similar process is used for Vitamin E incorporated polyethylene which provides antioxidant properties. This study aimed to investigate the critical long-term properties of oil-infused medical polyethylene after 4 weeks of accelerated thermal ageing. Samples treated with an oil (Vitamin E or Lipiodol) had a higher oxidation stability than currently used medical grade polyethylene, indicated by a smaller increase in oxidation index after ageing (Vitamin E + 36%, Lipiodol +40%, Untreated +136%, Thermally treated +164%). The tensile properties of oil treated polyethylene after ageing were significantly higher than the Untreated and Thermally treated controls (p less then 0.05) indicating less mechanical degradation. There was also no alteration in the percentage crystallinity of oil treated samples after ageing, though the radiopacity of the Lipiodol treated samples reduced by 54% after ageing. The leaching of oil with time was also investigated; the leaching of Lipiodol and Vitamin E followed the same trend and reached a steady state by two weeks. Overall, it can be concluded that the diffusion of an oil-based fluid into polyethylene not only increases the oxidative and chemical stability of polyethylene but also adds additional functionality (e.g. radiopacity) providing a more suitable material for long-term medical applications.
We examined whether volunteering among older adults with cognitive impairments serves as a transitional role that can enhance these older persons' well-being and cognitive health.
Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, we selected older adults with cognitive impairments (
= 472) and developed linear mixed models to assess associations between volunteering and health outcomes.
Volunteers in our sample were mostly females, non-Hispanic whites, those with higher income, and those with a high-school diploma. Volunteering was associated with higher levels of self-rated health, and consistent participation in volunteer work was related to stronger feelings of purpose in life. Cognitive health slightly improved over time only among those who volunteered.
We demonstrate that cognitive impaired older adults' participation in the volunteer role can benefit cognitive health while strengthening their late life resilience.

Acute brain injury is a frequent perinatal neurologic complication that can involve the cerebellum. Although short-term outcomes of infants with neonatal cerebellar injury are well described, neurologic sequelae in older children are underreported. Here, we describe epilepsy-related outcomes in young children who suffered from neonatal cerebellar injuries.
In-house automated software identified patients with neonatal brain injuries who were evaluated at our institution both as neonates (≤28 days) and as children (≥1 year). Neonatal hospital course, neuroimaging, and outcomes related to epilepsy were reviewed from the medical record. Patients were stratified into 2 groups based on neonatal brain injuries those with cerebellar injury and those without cerebellar involvement.
Of the 282 neonates followed through childhood over the decade-long study period, 33 (12%) experienced neonatal brain injury. All 33 cases involved supratentorial injury, and 5 (15%) also included cerebellar injury. The development of epilepsy was significantly less likely in the group with cerebellar involvement (40%) compared to that with cerebellar sparing (82%;
= 0.043). In some cases, children with cerebellum-sparing injuries required admission for seizure control and developed drug-resistant epilepsy as well as status epilepticus. These outcomes occurred less frequently in the group with cerebellar involvement.
Epilepsy-related sequelae may occur less frequently when the cerebellum is involved in neonatal brain injury. Larger prospective studies are needed to clarify how cerebellocortical networks impact functional brain connectivity and epilepsy longitudinally.
