William James described pragmatism in 1907 as a new name for old methods of thinking. His lecture series, "Pragmatism - A New Name for Old Methods of Thinking" was an attempt to address this. He began by describing what he called 'The Present Dilemma in Philosophy'--a fundamental and seemingly unsolvable conflict between two ways of thinking: the hard-headed empiricist belief in the experience of things and going by the facts, versus the more gentle-minded tendency to a priori theories that appeal to rationalization. He proclaimed that pragmatism could be able to bridge this gap.

He defined 'praxy, as a concept or truth that is rooted in an idealized theory but in the present world. He argued that the pragmatism approach was the most natural and authentic method of solving human problems. All other philosophical approaches according to him, were ineffective.

Other philosophers who developed pragmatist concepts in the 1900s included George Herbert Mead and W.E.B Du Bois, who came up with pragmatist perspectives upon social science and the study of race relations; Alain Locke, who created pragmatist views on the structure of science and education and John Dewey, who articulated pragmatist ideas in areas including public policy education, democracy, and the public sector.

Today, pragmatism continues influence the development of scientific and technological applications as well as the design and evaluation of curriculums and educational programs. He also acknowledges that pragmatism does not in principle reject religion and that religious beliefs can be legitimate for those who adhere to them.

A key figure amongst the classical pragmatics was John Dewey (1859 to 1952). He is well-known for his wide-ranging contributions to various areas of inquiry in philosophy such as ethics, social theory, philosophy of education, law aesthetics, and the philosophy of religion. In the latter part of his life, he began to regard pragmatism as the philosophy of democracy.

Recent pragmatists have developed new areas of inquiry that include computational pragmatics (the research of computer systems which use context to better understand the intentions of their users) as well as game theory and experimental pragmatics, and neuropragmatics.
