Herein, the substitution effects of the amino (NH2-) group with the excellent electron-donating ability in different positions on the antioxidant activity of Honokiol (Hon) were systematically explored by using the quantum chemistry calculation based on the density functional theory method. The three possible antioxidant mechanisms of Hon and its four NH2-substituted derivatives (Hon1-Hon4), containing the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), single electron transfer followed by proton transfer (SET-PT), and sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET), were explored in depth considering the gas and solvent phases. In addition, the frontier molecular orbital energies, natural bond orbital (NBO) charge population, and global descriptive parameters were used to study their antioxidant activity. The results indicate that compared with the original molecule Hon, the NH2 substituents would have the stronger antioxidant activity. Moreover, the radical scavenging process of Hon and its derivatives has a disposition to the HAT and SPLET mechanisms in the gas and solvent phases, respectively. Meaningfully, owing to the lowest bond dissociation enthalpy and proton affinity values, Hon4 would show the most prominent antioxidant activity by comparison with the other compounds. In conclusion, this work will provide the purposeful reference for designing and synthesizing the antioxidants with more outstanding performance.
To examine the safety and short-term oncologic outcomes of computer-tomography-guided (CT-guided) irreversible electroporation (IRE) of recurrent, irresectable colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) after major hepatectomy deemed unsuitable for thermal ablation.

Twenty-three patients undergoing CT-guided IRE of recurrent CRLM after major hepatectomy were included in this study. All tumors were located adjacent to sole remaining intrahepatic blood vessels and bile ducts, precluding thermal ablation. Patients underwent systematic clinical and imaging follow-up, including magnetic resonance imaging of the liver at 1-month and 3-month intervals thereafter. Time to local and intrahepatic tumor progression within 12 and 36months and associated risk factors were assessed using Kaplan Meier and Cox regression analysis, respectively.

Complete ablation with a safety margin of at least 0.5cm was achieved in 22/23 (95.6%) patients. No vessel injury or thrombosis occurred. Five patients developed moderate biliary stenosis after a median of 4weeks, without requiring treatment. Local tumor-progression-free rates within 12/36months were 64%/57.4%, respectively. Intrahepatic-progression-free rate within 12/36months was 36.4%/19.5%, respectively. Five (23%) patients were tumor-free at the end of follow-up. Multivariate Cox regression analysis did not show any association between local tumor-progression-free rates and patient age, target tumor size, primary tumor side or synchronicity of liver metastases.

The aim of the present study was to clarify an appropriate staging system for patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (LAESCC) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) prior to surgery.

A total of 388 patients with clinical stage II or III LAESCC who had undergone NAC followed by an esophagectomy with three-field lymphadenectomy were retrospectively reviewed.

The relapse-free survival (RFS) curves plotted using ypN grading and ypTNM staging both monotonically decreased as the classification number increased, and the groups were more clearly separated than when the Japanese Classification (JC) was applied. A multivariate analysis of relapse free survival (RFS) suggested that ypN (HR = 2.911, P < 0.001), lymphovascular invasion (LVI) (HR = 2.608, P < 0.001) were independent factors associated with OS. The LVI+/ypN+ group had a significantly poorer outcome than the other groups (P < 0.001). The 5-year RFS rates for patients with ypStage IIIA or higher among the LVI-negative cases and ypStage II or higher among the LVI-positive cases were around 0.6 or under. The novel pathological staging which was based on the present results was proposed and RFS curves of each novel stage suggested the suitability of these staging for our cohort.

To evaluate the utility of multidetector computed tomography MDCT quantitative measurements in identifying sarcopenia.

The clinical data and MDCT images of 64 patients of sarcopenia and 184 non-sarcopenic participants between October 2020 and January 2021were retrospectively analyzed. Propensity score matching was used to match the sarcopenic patients with the non-sarcopenic participants. Two radiologists independently measured the cross-sectional area (CSA) of skeletal muscle and intramuscular fat tissue and CT density of skeletal muscle at the middle L3 vertebral level on CT images of all participants. Intra-observer agreement was evaluated via intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was built for each variable. Correlations between CT parameters and clinical data were assessed via Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficient.

A total of 74 participants (mean age 72 ± 4years, range 66-85years; 38 men and 36 women) were included, comprising 37 sarcopenithe best predictive value for sarcopenia, which was moderately positively correlated with age.

The presence of ketone bodies (KBs) can interfere with creatinine (Cr) measurement in both enzymatic and Jaffe methods. Since a high proportion of children hospitalized for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) develop acute kidney injury (AKI), here we investigate whether KB interferences affect the accuracy of pediatric Cr measurement.

Residual patient plasma samples were pooled to make three Cr levels (~ 50, 100, and 250μM). KBs (acetone, acetoacetate, and β-hydroxybutyrate) were used to spike the pooled samples. All samples were measured for Cr by two enzymatic methods (E1 and E2), two Jaffe methods (J1 and J2), and LC-MS/MS. LC-MS/MS was considered the gold standard, and the % difference in Cr concentration was calculated for each method.

E1 and E2 were unaffected by the presence of all three KBs. J1 and J2 were unaffected by the presence of β-hydroxybutyrate. The presence of acetone resulted in dose-dependent positive interference in both Jaffe methods, whereas the presence of acetoacetate resulted in dose-idney function unclear if different methods are used without awareness of method-specific biases. To improve DKA patient care, we recommend standardizing all of the Cr methods to an enzymatic method. A higher resolution version of the Graphical abstract is available as Supplementary information.
Serum creatinine concentration is a primary component of Bedside Schwartz equation for estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in children. To standardize creatinine measurement, most manufacturers have adopted calibration procedures traceable to isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) using National Institute of Standards and Technology reference material. However, reference material representing much lower creatinine concentrations seen in children is not available and it is unclear how well commercial assays perform at pediatric levels.

One thousand nine hundred seventy-one specimens from consecutive children <19 years, with creatinine ≤0.8 mg/dL by Abbott Jaffe method were included. Creatinine measurements were compared between Abbott-Jaffe and Abbott-enzymatic methods. Furthermore, we evaluated performance of six commercial creatinine assays at concentrations seen in pediatric patients utilizing IDMS traceable serum samples.

We show that along with very high levels of genetic diversity and lack of genetic differentiation, Mongolic-speaking populations exhibit strong genetic resemblance to East Asian populations of Chinese, Japanese, and Uyghurs. Phylogeographic analysis of complete mitogenomes reveals the presence of different components in the gene pools of modern Mongolic-speaking populations-the main East Eurasian component is represented by mtDNA lineages of East Asian, Siberian and autochthonous (the Baikal region/Mongolian) ancestry, whereas the less pronounced West Eurasian component can be ascribed to Europe and West Asia/Caucasus. We also observed that up to one third of the mtDNA subhaplogroups identified in Mongolic-speaking populations can be considered as Mongolic-specific with the coalescence age of most of them not exceeding 1.7 kya. This coincides well with the population size growth which started around 1.1 kya and is detectable only in the Bayesian Skyline Plot constructed based on Mongolic-specific mitogenomes. Our data suggest that the genetic structure established during the Mongol empire is still retained in present-day Mongolic-speaking populations.
