In this work, we present for the first time, experimental data on use of HC for degradation of complex organic pollutants in water on four different scales (~200 times scale-up in terms of capacity). Vortex based HC devices offer various advantages like early inception, high cavitational yield and significantly lower propensity to clogging and erosion. We have used vortex based HC devices in this work. 2,4 dichloroaniline (DCA) - an aromatic compound with multiple functional groups was considered as a model pollutant. Degradation of DCA in water was performed using vortex-based HC devices with characteristic throat dimension, dt as 3, 6, 12 and 38 mm with scale-up of almost 200 time based on the flow rates (1.3 to 247 LPM). Considering the experimental constraints on operating the largest scale HC device, the experimental data is presented here at only one value of pressure drop across HC device (280 kPa). A previously used per-pass degradation model was extended to describe the experimental data for the pollutant used in this study and a generalised form is presented. The degradation performance was found to decrease with increase in the scale and then plateaus. Appropriate correlation was developed based on the experimental data. The developed approach and presented results provide a sound basis and a data set for further development of comprehensive multi-scale modelling of HC devices.Ultrasound was combined with ethanol to improve different aspects of carrot convective drying, evaluating both processing and product quality. The ultrasound in water treatment resulted in cellular swelling and small impact on texture. Differently, the ultrasound in ethanol and ethanol treatments modified both carrot microstructure (cell wall modifications of parenchymatic tissue) and macrostructure (shrinkage and resistance to perforation). Pre-treatments with ultrasound in ethanol and ethanol improved the drying kinetics, reducing the processing time (~50%) and the energy consumption (42-62%). These pre-treatments also enhanced rehydration, whose initial rate and water retention were higher than the control. In addition, the carotenoid content was preserved after drying, for all the treatments. Any impact on shrinkage was observed. A mechanistic discussion, based on structural modification (microstructure and macrostructure) and physical properties of water and ethanol, was provided. As conclusion, this work not only described positive aspects of combining the technologies of ultrasound and ethanol as pre-treatments to convective drying, but also proposed mechanisms to explain the phenomena.Social prescribing (SP) is an increasingly popular means of enabling medical professionals to refer people to social activities. This paper uses qualitative approaches to explore how place and sociability influence the experiences of individuals with type-2 diabetes in a social prescription walking group. Using in-situ conversations and in-depth interviews, we demonstrate how place and sociability extends beyond a group via storytelling, and allows individuals to become part of a group. Understanding place, sociability and storytelling is critical in characterising the benefits of social prescription.
To explore the experiences of expatriate nurses caring for Muslim patients near end-of-life in a palliative care unit in the United Arab Emirates.

A qualitative descriptive study, with data collected through semi structured individual interviews with nine expatriate nurses working in a palliative care unit in one hospital in the United Arab Emirates. Thematic analysis of the data transcripts used a structured inductive approach.

Analysis of the interview transcripts yielded three themes. First, language was a significant barrier in end-of-life care but was transcended when nurses practiced authentically, using presence, empathetic touch and spiritual care. Secondly, relationships between nurses, patients and families were strengthened over time, which was not always possible due to late presentation in the palliative care unit. Finally, nurses were continually in discussions with physicians, families and other nurses, co-creating the meaning of new information and experiences within the hospital policy o palliative care late in their disease trajectory. Preparing expatriate nurses for work in specialist palliative care settings requires skill development in advanced communication and spiritual practices, as well as principles of palliative care and tenets of Muslim culture.Despite pressing attention on construction waste management (CWM) issues, low rates of construction waste (CW) reuse and recycling (R&R) remain a limitation in construction projects. In recent years, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has gained momentum for CWM purposes; its data-richness, visualization, and simulation capabilities provide an opportunity to enhance CW R&R planning at the project level. In this context, this study proposes temporal-based algorithms integrated with 4D-BIM for the planning of concrete and drywall waste R&R throughout construction projects. Two case studies from Central Texas were used for the demonstration of the algorithms, and estimates were validated with ground truth data and literature values from different projects in North America. The overarching objective of the proposed algorithms is to streamline estimation and visual planning of CW for on-site reuse, and off-site recycling - therefore promoting a more proactive and schedule-based CWM plan. In addition, the approach improves team communication around CWM goals of the project. Moreover, through the use of 4D-BIM, on-site waste reuse opportunities are planned in advance, thus, improving resource recovery and minimizing waste disposal in landfills.Anaerobic digestion of primary sludge with different additives, namely nano magnetite, graphite powder, activated carbon powder and NiCl2/CoCl2, were evaluated by biomethane potential tests, kinetics modelling and microbial community analysis. Specific methane yields increased from 136 mL/g VS for primary sludge to 146 mL/g VS, 151 mL/g VS, and 152 mL/g VS for the addition of nano magnetite, graphite powder, and activated carbon powder at optimal dosages, respectively. The first order hydrolysis constant kh increased from 0.488 d-1 to 0.526 d-1, 0.622 d-1, and 0.724 d-1, respectively. Microbial community analysis revealed that the abundance of key bacterial and archaeal populations was positively correlated with hydrolysis and methane production. The enhanced methane production with activated carbon powder was due to shifting methane formation pathway from acetoclastic to hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. In contrast, nano magnetite and graphite powder additives enhanced the direct interspecies electron transfer evidenced by increased abundance of Methanosaeta and Methanolinea.Ethylene glycol production has been significantly augmented in recent years due to its various uses. However, conventional oil and coal-based ethylene glycol routes are forcing severe obstacles in production cost and pollutant emissions. Biomass is regarded as a potential contributor to cleaner and sustainable development of the energy sector. Herein, an efficient biomass-to-ethylene glycol (BtEG) process is firstly proposed and analyzed by the simulator, Aspen Plus software. Its key operational parameters are investigated and optimized after the validation of the established models and simulation results. Results show that the optimal oxygen/biomass ratio and temperature of biomass gasifier are 0.4 t/t and 1300 °C. The optimal reaction temperature, pressure, and H2/DMO ratio of ethylene glycol synthesis reactor are 220 °C, 4.0 MPa, and 4.5 kmol/kmol, respectively. After conducting carbon and exergy analyses, it found that the carbon and exergy efficiencies of this process are calculated as 37.64% and 38.74%.In this study, we investigated the degradation mechanism of erythromycin (ERY) during UV-LED/chlorine treatment using a 275-nm ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED). This wavelength is known to generate fewer disinfection byproducts (DBPs), and to have higher energy and photon yield efficiency compared to low pressure mercury (LP-UV) lamp which emits 254 nm of UV radiation. The degradation of ERY during the UV-LED/chlorine reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. While Cl• and ClO• radicals along with other secondary radicals played key roles in the degradation of ERY at alkaline pH conditions, •OH radical was the main contributor at acidic pH conditions. Using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QToF-MS), we tentatively identified six byproducts. Trace amounts of DBPs, such as chloroform (CHCl3) and chlorate (ClO3-) ions, were also detected at less than 0.3 mg/L. There was no residual antibiotic effect at the end of the UV-LED/chlorine reaction due to the complete degradation of important moieties, such as macrolide, in ERY. Toxicity decreased by 20% after 20 min during the UV-LED/chlorine process of ERY (1.0 mg/L) degradation. Finally, we confirmed the inactivation of ARB and ARG during the UV-LED/chlorine process.Four microbes (Campylobacter spp., Escherichia coli, Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp.) were monitored in 16 waterways that supply public drinking water for 13 New Zealand towns and cities. Over 500 samples were collected from the abstraction point at each study site every three months between 2009 and 2019. The waterways represent a range from small to large, free flowing to reservoir impoundments, draining catchments of entirely native vegetation to those dominated by pastoral agriculture. We used machine learning algorithms to explore the relative contribution of land use, catchment geology, vegetation, topography, and water quality characteristics of the catchment to determining the abundance and/or presence of each microbe.
