Transactive response DNA-binding protein of ∼43 kDa (TDP-43), a primary pathologic substrate in tau-negative frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), is also often found in the brains of elderly individuals without FTLD and is a key player in the process of neurodegeneration in brains with and without FTLD. In this longitudinal retrospective study of 293 patients with 843 MRI scans spanning over ∼10 years, we used a Bayesian hierarchical linear model to quantify similarities and differences between the non-FTLD TDP-43 (type-α/type-β) and FTLD-TDP (n = 68) in both regional volume at various timepoints before death and annualized rate of atrophy. Since Alzhlly, brain atrophy regional rates also vary by non-FTLD TDP-43 type.To understand complex and multifaceted nature of judgments about equality, this research investigated adolescents' judgments and reasoning about social inequalities among different social groups. Adolescents ranging in age from 12 to 17 years (N = 72) were presented with hypothetical situations depicting inequalities in distribution of resources among different groups based on social class, race, and gender. The situations bearing on social class inequalities involved allocation of resources associated with levels of personal wealth, and the other situations pertained to inequalities based on group characteristics of race and gender. Although the majority of adolescents negatively evaluated the inequalities in all situations, fewer judged the inequalities as unacceptable in the situations pertaining to social class inequalities involving personal goods. The evaluations about the inequalities based on race or gender were not contingent on conflicting personal choices, authority, rules, or common practices and were justified mostly with considerations of equality. However, when making judgments about inequalities based on social class, adolescents attended to the need to promote others' welfare and nonmoral concerns in the personal and conventional domains.
Hospital administrators often seek to increase operating room (OR) elective caseload. Previous studies from Iowa demonstrated that surgical growth is mostly from low-caseload surgeons (ie, ≤2 cases per week). We repeated that study using data from Florida, a much more populous state, to confirm the generalizability of the findings.

Retrospective cohort study.

All patients undergoing elective surgery during 2018 and 2019.

We determined growth between 2018 and 2019 in regular-workday elective surgical caseload and intraoperative work relative value units (wRVU) at hospitals. Using the two-sided, one group Student t-test, we compared the fractions of those increases attributable to low-caseload surgeons vs. 50% to assess if they accounted for most surgical growth. We used the exact binomial test to compare the fraction of hospitals where most growth (>50%) occurred from low-caseload surgeons to half (50%).

We studied the 1,629,879 elective cases from 202 hospy from the increased activity of low-caseload surgeons averaging ≤2.0 cases per week during the preceding year, confirming the generalizability of the previous Iowa study. If growth in caseload is desired, surgical governance committees should ensure that low-caseload surgeons have access to the OR schedule.
In the United States, alcohol use disorder adversely affects 5.6% of all adults. Excessive alcohol consumption adversely affects organ functions critical for adaptation to stress induced by surgery. Colorectal resection is one of the most common major surgeries in patients at risk for alcohol use disorder. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of alcohol use disorder on hospital outcomes after colectomy using a population-based discharge database.

The seedlings were sprayed with (1) distilled water (CK), (2) NaCl, (3) GR24, then NaCl, (4) GR24, then H2O2 scavenger, then NaCl, and (5) GR24, then Ca2+ blocker, then NaCl. Under the salt stress, the exogenous GR24 maintained the ion balance, increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes, reduced the membrane lipid peroxidation, and increased the activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), accompanied by a decrease in relative conductivity, an increase in the proline content, and elevated gene expression levels of antioxidant enzymes, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPKs), salt overly sensitive SOS1, CBL-interacting protein kinase 2 (CIPK2), and calcineurin B-like protein 3 (CBL3). Such protective effects triggered by GR24 were attenuated or almost abolished by ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA), lanthanum chloride (LaCl3, Ca2+ channel blocker), diphenyleneiodonium (DPI, NADPH oxidase inhibitor), and dimethylthiourea (DMTU, hydroxyl radical scavenger). Our data suggest that exogenous GR24 is highly effective in alleviating salt-induced damages via modulating antioxidant capabilities and improving ionic homeostasis and osmotic balance and that H2O2 and Ca2+ are required for GR24-mediated enhancement of salt tolerance.Groundwater irrigation has evolved the monocropping cultivation pattern to multi-cropping, especially in many arid/semi-arid tracts globally. Irrigation practices with the groundwater of poor quality can limit the selection of the crop, reduce crop yields and degrade the soil quality. The present study has been undertaken to identify the hydrogeochemical phenomena of groundwater systems in the south-western Birbhum district, India and to analyze groundwater suitability for irrigation during the pre-and post-monsoon cycles by adopting the Irrigation Water Quality Index (IWQI) using Multivariate Factor Analysis along with some traditional methods viz. sodium adsorption ratio, sodium percentage, magnesium hazards, residual sodium bicarbonate (RSBC) and carbonate (RSC), Wilcox's and USSL diagrams, permeability index and Kelly's index. The hydrogeochemical analysis revealed that chemical weathering and evaporation are predominant in the aquifer systems. Groundwater quality reflected soil salinity, sodicity and magroundwater facies which in turn will improve the groundwater quality for irrigation.Microcystins (MCs) pollution caused by cyanobacteria harmful blooms (CHBs) has posed short- and long-term risks to aquatic ecosystems and public health. Litronesib Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been verified as an effective technology for eutrophication but the removal performance for MCs did not achieve an acceptable level. CWs integrated with microbial fuel cell (MFC-CWs) were developed to intensify the nutrient and Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) removal efficiencies in this study. The results indicated that closed-circuit MFC-CWs (T1) exhibited a better NO3--N, NH4+-N, TP and MC-LR removal efficiency compared to that of open-circuit MFC-CWs (CK, i.e., traditional CWs). Therein, a MC-LR removal efficiency of greater than 95% was observed in both trials in T1. The addition of sponge iron to the anode layer of MFC-CWs (T2) improved only the NO3--N removal and efficiency bioelectricity generation performance compared to T1, and the average effluent MC-LR concentration of T2 (1.14 μg/L) was still higher than the provisional limit concentration (1.0 μg/L). The microbial community diversity of T1 and T2 was simplified compared to CK. The relative abundance of Sphingomonadaceae possessing the degradation capability for MCs increased in T1, which contributed to the higher MC-LR removal efficiency compared to CK and T2. While the relative abundance of electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) (i.e., Desulfuromonadaceae and Desulfomicrobiaceae) in the anode of T2 was promoted by the addition of sponge iron. Overall, this study suggests that integrating MFC into CWs provides a feasible intensification strategy for eutrophication and MCs pollution control.The shortage of water and energy are hindering the rapid development of the regional economy in recent years. Therefore, exploring the synergy of water and energy and managing the two resources comprehensively is conducive to the sustainable development of the economy. Based on the multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model, this study proposed a new assessment framework for investigating the water-energy (WE) relationship. We used this novel framework to identify the relationships in different sectors. The achieved results are as follows. First, water and energy are closely related in many sectors, including agriculture, extractive sector, petroleum, coking, and nuclear fuel processing sector, and other sectors. However, the construction sector, textile and clothing sector, and wood processing and furniture manufacturing sector showed low correlation (p > 0.05). Second, on the whole, the WE relationship has been improving. Among the eight regions, the relationship varies greatly, and the Southern coastal region has the best relationship (r = 0.78). Third, the spatial distribution of water and energy footprints shows high agreement. Although the virtual water and energy flows alleviated the energy pressure in Coastal areas, it has aggravated the water and energy shortages in Central areas. Therefore, identification of key sectors and construction of suitable policies may help alleviate the contradiction between water and energy shortages and drive regional economic development.The decarbonization and the transition pathways from fossil fuels to green energy technologies in the era of global climatic change, poses great challenges. An effective management tool of all parameters related to a just transition plan could minimize the effects on local communities and maximize the long-term benefits creating conditions for the enhancement of regional sustainable development. For this reason, this paper develops a conceptual model for the evaluation of crucial aspects related to decarbonization projects, through a questionnaire to survey a sample of locals from a coal dependent region. A methodology based on the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to investigate a set of ten hypotheses which describe possible relationships between the aspects of the conceptual model. Although, respondents agree with the need for a change in the current fossil fuel resource management system, they do not regard that the decarbonization will have a positive effect on the sustainability of the coal-dependent region.
