After Toto IV, the band's fortunes turned for the worse. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career, and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the band continued as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It was not as well-liked as IV. However, the band had a successful chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was the first album featuring a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an ode to the classic sextet format, and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. Its more punk-rock sound was indicative of the maturation of group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's improved ability on the drums and a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more refined, sharper, and less derivative than earlier performances.


After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released their new studio album a few months later and embarked on a tour around the world to promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before.
