Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet style of previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloying than on previous recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded their Amsterdam live concert that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album just a few months after, and went on a tour around the world to help promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 and released as a double album called Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without the single track "A".
