Here, we experimentally explore defect textures of the smectic LC phase in unique confining geometries with variable curvature. We show that a complex range of director configurations can arise from a single system, depending on sample processing procedures. Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is a common procedure used for the treatment of intracranial hypertension. Once brain swelling has subsided, a cranioplasty is performed to restore cosmesis and protection to the brain. While using the patient's autologous bone flap is often the first choice in cranioplasty, this procedure is frequently complicated by bone flap resorption and infection. This study seeks to identify predictors of autologous cranioplasty failure.

A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent decompressive craniectomy and autologous cranioplasty. Patient demographics and factors related to both surgeries and failure rates were recorded from patient records. Logistic regressions were conducted to determine which factors were implicated in autologous cranioplasty failure.

In our cohort, 127 patients underwent autologous cranioplasty. Overall, 18 (14.2%) patients experienced autologous cranioplasty failure. Regression analysis identified development of post-traumatic hydroceph predictors of autologous cranioplasty failure. Interestingly, the presence of VP shunt did not impact the odds of flap failure.
Acutely symptomatic abdominal wall and groin hernias are a common reason for acute surgical hospital admissions. There are limited data to guide the treatment of these patients. This study aimed to assess outcomes of emergency hernia surgery and identify common management strategies, to improve care for these high-risk patients.

A 20-week, national multicentre, collaborative, prospective cohort study (NCT04197271) recruited adults with acutely symptomatic abdominal wall and groin hernias across the UK. Data on patient characteristics, inpatient management, quality of life, complications, and wound healing were collected. Follow-up telephone calls at 30 and 90 days were used to assessed complications and quality of life. Descriptive analyses were undertaken to describe the population and outcomes.

Twenty-three hospitals recruited 272 eligible patients. Inguinal (37.8 per cent) and umbilical (37.1 per cent) hernias were the most common. Taking advantage of machine-learning and computational chemistry approaches, we screened the PubChem database to select sesterterpenoids alotaketals as potential PKC ligands, then designed and synthesized alotaketal analogues with a different ring system and stereochemistry from the natural products. The analogue exhibited a one-order higher affinity for PKCα-C1A than for the PKCδ-C1B domain. Thus, this compound is expected to serve as the basis for developing PKC ligands with isozyme selectivity.
This work proposes "Spin-3/2 Bloch Equation" (SBE), a consolidated formalism for spin-3/2 dynamics in biological environments. The formalism encapsulates excitation, relaxation, and off-resonance with accessible matrix representation for a straightforward implementation with high computational efficiency.

The SBE is derived using spherical tensor operators to encapsulate the spin-3/2 dynamics in biological systems in a single system matrix, a formalism akin to the well-known Bloch Equations (BE).

The Indian mangrove, or spurred mangrove, [Ceriops tagal (Perr.) C. B. Rob.] is a member of the Rhizophoraceae family and is commonly found along the intertidal zones in tropical regions in Southeast Asia, southern Asia, and Africa. Here, we present the first high-quality reference genome assembly of the Ceriops species. A preliminary draft assembly, generated from the 10× Genomics linked-read library, was scaffolded using the proximity ligation chromatin contact mapping technique (Hi-C) to obtain a chromosome-scale assembly of 231,919,005 bases with an N50 length of 11,408,429 bases. The benchmarking universal single-copy orthologs (BUSCO) analysis revealed that C. tagal gene predictions recovered 95.8% of the highly conserved orthologs. Phylogenetic analyses suggested that C. tagal diverged from the last common ancestor of flat-leaf spurred mangrove [C. decandra (Griff.) Ding Hou] and C. zippeliana Blume ∼10.4 million yr ago (MYA), and the last common ancestor of genera Ceriops, Kandelia, and Rhizophora diverged from that of genus Bruguiera ∼49.4 MYA. In addition, our analysis of the transversion rate at fourfold-degenerate sites from orthologous gene pairs provided evidence supporting a recent whole-genome duplication in C. tagal. The STRUCTURE and principal component analyses illustrated that C. tagal individuals investigated in this study were the admixture of two subpopulations, the genetic background of which was influenced primarily by location. The availability of genomic and transcriptomic resources and biodiversity data reported in this work will be useful for future studies that may shed light on adaptive evolutions of mangrove species.
Positron emission tomography (PET) myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) is often combined with coronary artery calcium (CAC) scanning, allowing for a combined anatomic and functional assessment. We evaluated the independent prognostic value of quantitative assessment of myocardial perfusion and CAC scores in patients undergoing PET.

Consecutive patients who underwent Rb-82 PET with CAC scoring between 2010 and 2018, with follow-up for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), were identified. Perfusion was quantified automatically with total perfusion deficit (TPD). Our primary outcome was MACE including all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction (MI), admission for unstable angina, and late revascularization. Associations with MACE were assessed using multivariable Cox models adjusted for age, sex, medical history, and MPI findings including myocardial flow reserve.In total, 2507 patients were included with median age 70. During median follow-up of 3.9 years (interquartile range 2.1-6.1), 594 patients experienced at least one MACE.
