Pragmatism emphasizes context and experience. It could be lacking a clear set of fundamental principles or an encapsulated ethical framework. This could result in an absence of idealistic goals or transformational change.

Unlike deflationary theories of truth, pragmatic theories of truth do not reject the idea that statements relate to states of affairs. They only clarify the role that truth plays in everyday endeavors.

Definition

The word pragmatic is used to refer to people or things that are practical, logical and sensible. It is often contrasted with idealistic, which refers to a person or concept that is based on ideals or high principles. When making decisions, a sensible person takes into consideration the real world and the circumstances. They focus on what is feasible instead of trying to find the ideal path of action.

Pragmatism, a new philosophical movement, emphasizes the importance that practical consequences determine what is true, meaning or value. It is an alternative in contrast to the dominant analytical and continental traditions. It was founded by Charles Sanders Peirce and William James with Josiah Royce as its founding fathers, pragmatism grew into two competing streams one of which is akin to relativism, and the other toward realist thought.

The nature of truth is a central issue in pragmatism. Many pragmatists acknowledge that truth is a valuable concept, but they differ on how to define it or how it is applied in the actual world. One approach, heavily influenced by Peirce and James, focuses on how people solve problems & make assertions, and gives priority to the speech-acts and justification projects users of language use to determine whether something is true. Another method that is that is influenced by Rorty and his followers, concentrates on the relatively mundane functions of truth--how it is used to generalize, commend and avert danger. Its first generation was initiated by Charles Sanders Peirce and William James, as well as their Harvard colleague Josiah Royce (1855-1916). The pragmatic theory has been criticised for centuries however, in recent years it has attracted more attention. They include the notion that pragmatism collapses when it comes to moral issues and its assertion that "what works" is nothing more than relativism with a less-polished appearance.

Methods
