ADHD Private Diagnosis
Many people choose to seek private diagnoses due to long NHS waiting times. What exactly is this?
If you choose to get a private diagnosis It is important to confirm that your doctor accepts the concept of a 'Shared Care Agreement' prior to moving ahead. You'll still be eligible for follow-up treatment through the NHS following the diagnosis.
What is ADHD assessment?
A psychiatrist who has experience in diagnosing ADHD in adults will conduct a diagnostic interview. The process begins with a thorough discussion of the patient's medical history, prior treatments and symptoms. The review also includes any relevant family, work and social history. If your insurance provider will cover the cost of the evaluation ask them for a specialist in your area. The recommendations of friends and colleagues are an excellent source. Avoid "speedy" online evaluation sites which are not accepted by the majority of providers and frequently do not meet the required requirements for a valid diagnosis.
The initial assessment can take up to an hour or more. In this time, the doctor will interview the patient to discuss their current concerns (as well when they started). Then the doctor will talk to people who know the patient - a spouse or sibling for an adult, and a teacher, coach or day care worker for a child and use checklists to determine the symptoms. This can give a more personal insight than the questionnaire.
A doctor may also use several tests to confirm or rule out ADHD. These tests may include neuropsychological assessments of the attention system as well as executive functioning and achievement tests. The tests are designed to evaluate the results between people with ADHD and those who do not have ADHD. They can range between 15 minutes and one hour.
adhd assessment private cost will review all the information and If ADHD is identified discuss the various treatments available to the patient. The treatment suggested will be based on the severity and duration of symptoms. It could include medication, CBT therapy, lifestyle adjustments or both. Some people may need to try a few different combinations of dosages and medications before settling on a combination that is effective for them.
If the specialist finds that ADHD is present, he or she will assess whether it is predominantly inattentive or hyperactive-impulsive and will decide if the symptoms are mild, moderate or severe. A diagnosis can only be made if the individual has at least six traits (symptoms) of any kind within the last 6 months.
How do I conduct an ADHD assessment?

You'll likely be asked complete some questionnaires or forms prior your appointment. Most often, they'll ask you to give examples of symptoms that you encounter in different areas of your life. For instance, they could ask you to rate how often you miss important appointments or misplace things. They'll also inquire about your family history, your medical history, and your general health.
The consultant psychiatrist will review the results of your questionnaires and then conduct a medical consultation to discuss your medical history and symptoms. They'll then use these results to determine if you're in line with the criteria for an ADHD diagnosis (as described in the DSM V). This will include both looking at the traits of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, as well as assessing your overall functioning.

The symptoms of ADHD can appear in many different situations and settings. They can affect school, work as well as family life, friendships and home obligations. A diagnosis should be determined by symptoms that affect at least 2 of these settings, and result in significant impairment. This can lead to job loss, relationship issues, poor performance in college or at school financial issues, impulsive spending, and even legal troubles.
It is common for adults to seek out a diagnosis because they are frustrated with their inability to stay focused and complete their tasks or are having difficulty in their relationships due to the fact that they are having a difficult time listening. You may have noticed that they are more susceptible to accidents and impulsive behaviors such as reckless driving or skipping classes, or sabotaging social plans.
As with children, the diagnosis of ADHD in adults is more difficult. Adults exhibit fewer symptoms, and the disorder is able to be present alongside other mental health issues and medical ailments. To confirm the diagnosis, an adult suffering from ADHD must be evaluated and diagnosed by a variety of specialists.
The evaluation will involve an in-depth interview and a thorough review of the medical history of the patient and a physical exam to eliminate any other medical conditions which might cause symptoms similar to those of ADHD. The doctor will employ standardized scales to assess and compare the symptoms of the patient. They may also ask the person to complete questionnaires or other types of neuropsychological or psychological testing.
If a psychiatrist or psychologist believes that a person has ADHD or other disorders, they will issue a formal diagnoses and discuss the treatment options. This may include psychotherapy, medication or other behavioral treatments.

It can be a tremendous relief to know that laziness or lack of intelligence was not the cause of their difficulties in the workplace, at school, in relationships, and in other areas. It can be an empowering feeling to know that it is possible to control the condition through treatment and medication.
