Therefore, we herein examined the diversity, composition, and potential functions of the gut microbiota in three Sceloporus lizards Sceloporus aeneus, S. bicanthalis, and S. grammicus, inhabiting different habitats in a mountainous ecosystem. The gut bacterial community of S. bicanthalis from alpine grasslands at 4,150 m a.s.l. exhibited greater taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional alpha diversities than its sister species S. aeneus from cornfields and human-induced grasslands at 2,600 m a.s.l. Bacteria of the genus Blautia and metabolic functions related to the degradation of aromatic compounds were more abundant in S. bicanthalis than in S. aeneus, whereas Oscillibacter and predicted functions related to amino acid metabolism and fermentation were more abundant in S. aeneus. The structure of the dominant and most prevalent bacteria, i.e., the core microbiota, was similar between the sister species from different habitats, but differed between S. grammicus and S. aeneus cohabiting at 2,600 m a.s.l. and between S. grammicus and S. bicanthalis cohabiting at 4,150 m a.s.l. These results suggest that phylogenetic relatedness defines the core microbiota, while the transient, i.e., non-core, microbiota is influenced by environmental differences in the habitats. Our comparisons between phylogenetically close species provide further evidence for the specialized and complex associations between hosts and the gut microbiota as well as insights into the roles of phylogeny and ecological factors as drivers of the gut microbiota in wild vertebrates.Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the causative agent of viral hepatitis E. In Japan, HEV genotype 3 (G3) and G4 are predominantly detected, while G1, mainly imported from countries in continental Asia, is rare. In the present study, we detected a G1 HEV strain in a patient who visited Japan from India. When PLC/PRF/5 cells (subclone 4-21) were inoculated with a stool suspension from this patient, accumulation of HEV RNA was observed in the spent culture medium, indicating that HEV had been successfully isolated from this specimen. A nearly complete HEV genome was obtained by RT-PCR amplification. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that the newly isolated HEV strain, designated 9HE36c, belongs to subtype 1g of HEV G1.The incidence of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) has increased owing to the rising number of immunodeficient patients. A case-control study was performed at the Ain Shams University Hospitals, Cairo, Egypt. The case group (n = 80) included 80 patients diagnosed with hematological malignancies, and the control group (n = 20) included 20 patients. All patients were tested for the presence of fungal species using blood culture and panfungal real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Fungal species differentiation was performed using high-resolution melting (HRM) PCR. There were 39 suspected cases of IFIs among the 80 patients. The panfungal RT-PCR detection rate was 51.3% (41/80). HRM-PCR identified that 51.2% of the fungal species were Candida albicans, 44.0% were non-Candida albicans, and 4.9% were Mucor. The blood cultures were positive for the presence of fungi in two patients with acute myeloid leukemia. The fungal detection rate using the panfungal RT-PCR technique was significantly higher than that using the blood culture technique (P less then 0.001). RT-PCR using panfungal markers is sensitive, rapid, and superior to the blood culture technique to detect IFIs. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of respiratory viruses among hospitalized children aged ≤2 years with acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) in Xiamen, China, from October 2014 to September 2017. The clinical records of 7,248 children hospitalized for ARTIs were retrospectively analyzed. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) (22.3%) was the most common virus among hospitalized children aged ≤2 years, followed by parainfluenza (5.0%), adenovirus (3.5%), and influenza (1.7%). RSV-infected children had a higher disease burden, including a higher intensive care unit (ICU) admission rate (12.7%) and higher hospital charges ($635.36). Particularly, infants aged less then 6 months had the highest risk of RSV infection (odds ratio = 2.4; 95% CI, 1.9-2.9) and a higher ICU admission rate (12.1% vs. 4.5%, 4.6%) and hospital cost ($923.3 vs. $785.5, $811.7) than the other age groups. Therefore, infants aged 0-6 months, particularly premature infants and children with congenital diseases, should receive more attention. SFTSV has a wide spectrum of animal hosts and is considered to circulate in an enzootic tick-vertebrate-tick cycle. A previous seroepidemiological study showed the presence of anti-SFTSV antibodies in wild mongooses (Herpestes auropunctatus) and indicated that outdoor activity was associated with an increased risk of tick bites among Okinawa residents. However, the association of SFTSV with wild mongooses and ticks remains unclear. To understand the association between ticks and mongooses with respect to the SFTSV enzootic cycle, we investigated the presence of SFTSV RNA in ticks collected from wild mongooses on the Okinawa Island. A total of 638 ticks belonging to 2 genera and 3 species (Haemaphysalis hystricis, Haemaphysalis formosensis, and Ixodes granulatus) were collected from 22 wild mongooses from 2016 to 2021. SFTSV RNA was detected in two pools of H. hystricis larvae collected from a wild mongoose in the central area of the main island of Okinawa in 2017. Although the prevalence of SFTSV in ticks from wild mongooses is low, endemic circulation of the virus in Okinawa should be carefully monitored to prevent future infections.Mycobacterium abscessus infection of the upper extremities is uncommon. However, M abscessus can cause severe chronic tenosynovitis, and delayed diagnosis may result in poor outcomes. We describe an unusual clinical case of purulent flexor tendon synovitis followed by subcutaneous tendon rupture due to M abscessus infection in a patient with diabetes mellitus. A 76-year-old man presented to our hospital with painful, erythematous swelling over his left fourth finger. On physical examination, the left fourth finger was swollen and reddish, with persistent exudate from the surgical scar. The left elbow was also swollen and reddish with persistent discharge, which was consistent with olecranon bursitis. The patient was unable to flex his left fourth finger, and the passive range of motion of the finger was also restricted. The physical examination findings and patient history suggested purulent flexor tendinitis. His infection healed after radical debridement of necrotic tissue and administration of antibiotics effective against M abscessus. Third-stage flexor reconstruction restored the function of the fourth finger. The combination of surgical debridement and chemotherapy was the most effective treatment for mycobacterial tenosynovitis. This case shows that M abscessus can cause chronic severe purulent tenosynovitis and flexor tendon rupture after tendon surgery. Although early diagnosis and combination treatment with debridement and chemotherapy might improve outcomes by limiting the severity and duration of damage to the flexor synovial system, late-presenting patients require combined radical debridement of necrotic tissue and aggressive chemotherapy followed by staged flexor tendon reconstruction.
The prolonged pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has resulted in mental burden among healthcare workers (HCWs). This study aimed to conduct a repeated study to assess changes in psychological concerns among Japanese HCWs.

This study is the second survey involving HCWs at the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center conducted between November 20, 2020 and December 4, 2020. The degree of symptoms of anxiety, depression, and resilience was assessed using the Japanese versions of the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, respectively.

The survey included 594 HCWs, comprising 95 physicians, 261 nurses, 150 other co-medical staff, and 88 office workers. Among them, 46 (7.7%) and 152 (25.6%) developed moderate-to-severe symptoms of anxiety and depression, respectively.
