Among remediation solutions, biotechnology offers a number of environmentally friendly options, one of which is phytoremediation. Also, heavy metals are often found in soil in less bioavailable forms to be extracted by plant roots. They are analyzed and concisely described in this paper, emphasizing how these techniques can act to increase plant tolerance to the toxicity of heavy metal ions and can change the conditions in the rhizosphere area to favor heavy metals extraction and the transport in the roots and their translocation towards the aerial parts of the plant.Elastic fibers are an essential part of the pulmonary extracellular matrix (ECM). Intact elastin is required for normal function and its damage contributes profoundly to the etiology and pathology of lung disease. This highlights the need for novel lung-specific imaging methodology that enables high-resolution 3D visualization of the ECM. We consider elastin's involvement in chronic respiratory disease and examine recent methods for imaging and modeling of the lung in the context of advances in lung tissue engineering for research and clinical application.Biliary Atresia is a devastating pediatric cholangiopathy affecting the bile ducts of the liver. In this review, we describe recent progress in the understanding of liver development with a focus on cholangiocyte differentiation and how use of technical platforms, including rodent, zebrafish and organoid models, advances our understanding of Biliary Atresia. This is followed by a description of potential pathomechanisms, such as autoimmune responses, inflammation, disturbed apical-basal cell polarity, primary cilia dysfunction as well as beta-amyloid accumulation. Finally, we describe current and emerging diagnostic opportunities and recent translation breakthroughs for Biliary Atresia in the area of emerging therapy development, including immunomodulation and organoid-based systems for liver and bile duct repair.
Wearable biosensors have the potential to monitor physiological change associated with opioid overdose among people who use drugs.

We enrolled 16 individuals who reported ≥4 daily opioid use events within the previous 30day. Each was assigned a wearable biosensor that measured respiratory rate (RR) and actigraphy every 15s for 5 days and also completed a daily interview assessing drug use. We describe the volume of RR data collected, how it varied by participant characteristics and drug use over time using repeated measures one-way ANOVA, episodes of acute respiratory depression (≤5 breaths/minute), and self-reported overdose experiences.

We captured 1626.4h of RR data, an average of 21.7 daily hours/participant over follow-up. Individuals with longer injection careers and those engaging in polydrug use captured significantly fewer total hours of respiratory data over follow-up compared to those with shorter injections careers (94.7 vs. 119.9h, p = 0.04) and injecting fentanyl exclusively (98.7 vs. 119.5 h, p = 0.008), respectively. There were 385 drug use events reported over follow-up. BRD7389 There were no episodes of acute respiratory depression which corresponded with participant reports of overdose experiences.

People who inject drugs (PWID) have been a marginalized and a stigmatized population since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic and have not experienced the same life-changing benefits of antiretroviral therapy as others. Tele-Harm Reduction (THR) is a telehealth-enhanced, harm reduction intervention, delivered within a trusted SSP venue. It aims to facilitate initiation of care and achieve rapid HIV viral suppression among PWID living with HIV.

In this mixed-methods study, we employed the Practical, Robust, Implementation and Sustainability Model (PRISM) implementation science framework to identify multilevel barriers and facilitators to implementing the THR intervention. Focus groups (n=2, 16 participants), stakeholder interviews (n=7) and in-depth interviews were conducted with PWID living with HIV (n=25). In addition, to assess feasibility and acceptability, we pilot tested the THR intervention and reported viral suppression at 6 months.

The current body of work shows that the toxin regulatory network overlaps with the regulatory networks of sporulation, motility, and key metabolic pathways. This implies that toxin production is a complicated process initiated by bacteria in response to numerous host factors during infection. We summarize the existing knowledge about the toxin gene regulatory network here.The t(4;12)(q12;p13) has been rarely reported in both myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms with eosinophilia (ETV6/PDGFRA gene fusion) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) (ETV6/CHIC2 gene fusion). The ability to accurately characterize t(4;12) is critical as myeloid neoplasms with PDGFRA rearrangements may be amenable to tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy. Herein, we describe a 60-year-old male with newly diagnosed AML and t(4;12)(q12;p13) by conventional chromosome studies. While the ETV6 break-apart fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) probe set demonstrated a balanced ETV6 gene rearrangement, the FIP1L1/CHIC2/PDGFRA tri-color and PDGFRA break-apart FISH probe sets could not resolve the ETV6 gene fusion partner. Mate-pair sequencing (MPseq), a next-generation sequencing assay, was subsequently performed and identified an ETV6 gene rearrangement (at 12p13) that involved an intergenic chromosomal region at 4q12, located between the CHIC2 and PDGFRA gene regions. Having excluded involvement by the PDGFRA gene region, the patient will not be considered for TKI therapy at any point during his medical management. The accurate characterization of structural rearrangements by NGS-based technologies, as demonstrated in this case, highlights the clinical relevance and potential impact on patient medical management of modern cytogenetic techniques.
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that produces movement disorders and it is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's. Among other symptoms, PD affects gait patterns and produces bradykinesia, abnormal changes in posture, and shortened strides. In this study we present a comprehensive analysis of three different feature sets to model those abnormal gait patterns. The proposed approach is evaluated upon three groups of subjects PD patients, young healthy controls (YHC), and elderly healthy controls (EHC).

Three feature sets are created (1) kinematic measures including those that allow modeling time, distance and velocity of the strides, (2) nonlinear dynamics including different measures extracted from embedded attractors resulting from the time-series of the gait signals, and (3) different stability measures extracted in the time and frequency-domains. Support Vector Machine, Random Forest and XGBoost classifiers are trained to automatically discriminate between PD patients and healthy subjects.

Among the considered feature sets, three individual measures emerge as the ones that yield accurate detection of PD and could potentially be used in clinical practice. Accuracies of up to 87.0% and 90.0% are found for the classification between PD vs. YHC and PD vs. EHC, respectively, considering individual measures.

This study contributes to a better understanding of abnormal gait patterns observed in PD patients. Particularly the introduced approach shows good results that could be potentially used in clinical practice as a tool to support the diagnosis and follow-up of the patients.

While its extremes, hypo- and hypertelorism, have been linked to disorders often related to cognitive ability, little is known about the neural correlates of normal variation of telorism within the general population. We derived measures of orbital telorism from cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by calculating the distance between the eyeball center of gravity in two population-based datasets (N = 5,653, N = 29,824; mean age 64.66, 63.75 years). This measure was found to be related to grey matter tissue density within numerous regions of the brain, including, but surprisingly not limited to, the frontal regions, in both positive and negative directions. Additionally, telorism was related to several cognitive functions, such as Purdue pegboard test (Beta, P-value (CI95%) -.02, 1.63 × 10-7 (-.03-.01)) and fluid intelligence (.02, 4.75 × 10-6 (.010.02)), with some relationships driven by individuals with a smaller orbital telorism. This is reflective of the higher prevalence of hypotelorism in developmental disorders, specifically those that accompany lower cognitive lower functioning. This study suggests, despite previous links only made in clinical extremes, that orbital telorism holds some relation to structural brain development and cognitive function in the general population. This relationship is likely driven by shared developmental periods.This study aimed to investigate the dynamics of 137Cs around banks along an agricultural canal for paddy fields in Iitate, Fukushima, Japan. Five plots (2.4-12.6 m2) on the banks were monitored intermittently during six time periods from May 2018 to November 2019. We directly collected runoff water samples discharged from the banks followed by partitioning it into particulate and dissolved fractions and determining 137Cs in them. To investigate the source of 137Cs in the runoff water, we sequentially extracted 137Cs in various chemical forms from litter samples collected on the banks. The results showed that the discharge rates of the dissolved 137Cs per unit area from the plots were lower than those observed at the downstream of the agricultural canal, whereas more than 50% of the 137Cs discharged from the plots was in the dissolved fraction. Moreover, the results indicate that 137Cs stored in the standing plants and the litter was the primary source of the dissolved 137Cs discharged into the agricultural canal.
