A new gamma-ray sensor, which could be employed in harsh underwater conditions, was developed using YAlO3(Ce) single crystal and carbon nanotube reinforced polyetheretherketone (CNT/PEEK). The sensor is compact, highly sensitive and stable, by providing real-time gross counts and an accumulated spectrum for fresh, saline, or contaminated water conditions. The sensor was tested in a water tank for quantification of the limit of detections. The Φ51 × 51 mm2 YAlO3(Ce) crystal exhibits a nearly perfect proportionality with a correlation of over 0.999 in terms of light yield per energy and possesses a high energy resolution. The chemically stable CNT/PEEK window material further enhances the detection efficiency by minimizing the background counts from penetrating gamma-rays. Data timeliness was obtained for regulation-based minimum detectable activity targets within 300 s. For a source-detector distance of up to 300 mm in water, the gross counts demonstrate the existence of radionuclides (Cs-137 and Co-60), owing to their higher efficiency (max. ~15 times) than those of the photopeak counts. Such differences between efficiency values are more likely in water than in air because of the high density of water, resulting in an increased build-up of scattered photons. The proposed sensor is suitable for autonomous underwater systems.Phenobarbital is a first-line treatment of various seizure types in newborns. Dosage individualization maximizing the proportion of patients with drug levels in therapeutic range or sufficient treatment response is still challenging. The aim of this review was to summarize the available evidence on phenobarbital pharmacokinetics in neonates and to identify its possible covariates suitable for individualization of initial drug dosing. Several covariates have been considered body weight and height, body surface area, gestational and postnatal age, laboratory parameters of renal and hepatic functions, asphyxia, therapeutic hypothermia, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), drug interactions, and genetic polymorphisms. The most frequently studied and well-founded covariate for the estimation of phenobarbital dosing is actual body weight. Loading dose of 15-20 mg/kg followed by a maintenance dose of 3-5 mg/kg/day seems to be accurate. However, the evidence for the other covariates with respect to dosing individualization is not sufficient. Doses at the lower limit of suggested range should be preferred in patients with severe asphyxia, while the upper limit of the range should be targeted in neonates receiving ECMO support. The reported health effects of fermented dairy foods, which are traditionally manufactured in Bulgaria, are connected with their microbial biodiversity. The screening and development of probiotic starters for dairy products with unique properties are based exclusively on the isolation and characterization of lactic acid bacterial (LAB) strains. This study aims to systematically describe the LAB microbial content of artisanal products such as Bulgarian-type yoghurt, white brined cheese, kashkaval, koumiss, kefir, katak, and the Rhodope's brano mliako. The original technologies for their preparation preserve the valuable microbial content and improve their nutritional and probiotic qualities. This review emphasises the features of LAB starters and the autochthonous microflora, the biochemistry of dairy food production, and the approaches for achieving the fortification of the foods with prebiotics, bioactive peptides (ACE2-inhibitors, bacteriocins, cyclic peptides with antimicrobial activity), immunomodulatory exopolysaccharides, and other metabolites (indol-3-propionic acid, free amino acids, antioxidants, prebiotics) with reported beneficial effects on human health. The link between the microbial content of dairy foods and the healthy human microbiome is highlighted.Chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels, a polymeric system that shows a broad potential in biomedical applications, were developed. Despite the advantages they present, their mechanical properties are insufficient to support the loads that appear on the body. Thus, it was proposed to reinforce these gels with inorganic glass particles (BG) in order to improve mechanical properties and bioactivity and to see how this reinforcement affects levofloxacin drug release kinetics. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), swelling tests, rheology and drug release studies characterized the resulting hydrogels. The experimental results verified the bioactivity of these gels, showed an improvement of the mechanical properties and proved that the added bioactive glass does affect the release kinetics. We fabricated transparent and flexible silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) hard coating (HC) films on a colorless polyimide substrate to use as cover window films for flexible and foldable displays using a reactive roll-to-roll (R2R) sputtering system at room temperature. At a SiOC thickness of 100 nm, the R2R-sputtered SiOC film showed a high optical transmittance of 87.43% at a visible range of 400 to 800 nm. The R2R-sputtered SiOC films also demonstrated outstanding flexibility, which is a key requirement of foldable and flexible displays. There were no cracks or surface defects on the SiOC films, even after bending (static folding), folding (dynamic folding), twisting, and rolling tests. Furthermore, the R2R-sputtered SiOC film showed good scratch resistance in a pencil hardness test (550 g) and steel wool test under a load of 250 g. To test the impact protection ability, we compared the performance of thin-film heaters (TFHs) and oxide-semiconductor-based thin-film transistors (TFTs) with and without SiOC cover films. The similar performance of the TFHs and TFTs with the SiOC cover window films demonstrate that the R2R-sputtered SiOC films offer promising cover window films for the next generation of flexible or foldable displays.Helium ion beam induced deposition using the gaseous precursor pentamethylcyclopentasiloxane is employed to fabricate high aspect ratio insulator nanostructures (nanopillars and nanocylinders) that exhibit charge induced branching. The branched nanostructures are analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. Selleck HA15 It is found that the side branches form above a certain threshold height and that by increasing the flow rate of the precursor, the vertical growth rate and branching phenomenon can be significantly enhanced, with fractalesque branching patterns observed. The direct-write ion beam nanofabrication technique described herein offers a fast single-step method for the growth of high aspect ratio branched nanostructures with site-selective placement on the nanometer scale.Western corn rootworm (WCR), or Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, became a very serious quarantine maize pest in Europe in the mid-1990s. Between 1995 and 2010, European countries were involved in international projects to share information and plan common research for integrated pest management (IPM) implementation. Since 2011, however, common efforts have declined, and an overview of WCR population spread, density, and research is in serious need of update. Therefore, we retained that it was necessary to (1) summarize the research activities carried out in the last 12 years in various countries and the research topics addressed, and analyze how these activities have contributed to IPM for WCR and (2) present the current distribution of WCR in the EU and analyze the current population levels in different European countries, focusing on different management strategies. A review of scientific papers published from 2008 to 2020, in addition to direct interviews with experts in charge of WCR management in a range of European countries, was conducted. Over the past 12 years, scientists in Europe have continued their research activities to investigate various aspects of WCR management by implementing several approaches to WCR control. A considerable amount of new knowledge has been produced, contributing to the development of pest management strategies applicable in EU farming systems. Among the 10 EU countries analyzed, there is no country reporting economic damage on a large scale. Thanks to intensive research leading to specific agricultural practices and the EU Common Agricultural Policy, there are crop-rotation-based solutions that can adequately control this pest avoiding insecticide use.The spread of multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens and the lagging pace in the development of novel chemotherapeutic agents warrant the use of combination therapy as a reliable, cost-effective interim option. In this study, the synergistic effects of fosfomycin in combination with other antibiotics were assessed. Of the 193 isolates, 90.6% were non-susceptible to fosfomycin, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of ≥128 µg/mL. Antibacterial evaluation of fosfomycin-resistant isolates indicated multi-drug resistance to various antibiotic classes. Combinations of fosfomycin with 12 commonly used antibiotics synergistically inhibited most fosfomycin-resistant isolates. The fractional inhibitory concentration index indicated that combining fosfomycin with either aminoglycosides, glycylcyclines, fluoroquinolones, or colistin resulted in 2- to 16-fold reduction in the MIC of fosfomycin. Time-kill kinetics further confirmed the synergistic bactericidal effects of fosfomycin in combination with either amikacin, gentamicin, tobramycin, minocycline, tigecycline, or colistin, with more than 99.9% reduction in bacterial cells. Fosfomycin-based combination therapy might serve as an alternative option for the treatment of MDR A. baumannii. Further steps including in vivo efficacy and toxicity in experimental models of infection are required prior to clinical applications.Nosema ceranae is a microsporidian fungus that parasitizes the midgut epithelial cells of honey bees, Apis mellifera. Due to the role that midgut microorganisms play in bee health and immunity, food supplementation with prebiotics and probiotics may assist in the control of N. ceranae. The dietary fiber prebiotics acacia gum, inulin, and fructooligosaccharides, as well as the commercial probiotics Vetafarm Probotic, Protexin Concentrate single-strain (Enterococcus faecium), and Protexin Concentrate multi-strain (Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, L. delbrueckii, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Streptococcus salivarius, and E. faecium) were tested for their effect on N. ceranae spore loads and honey bee survivorship. Bees kept in cages were inoculated with N. ceranae spores and single-dose treatments were administered in sugar syrup. Acacia gum caused the greatest reduction in N. ceranae spore numbers (67%) but also significantly increased bee mortality (62.2%). However, Protexin Concentrate single-strain gave similarly reduced spore numbers (59%) without affecting the mortality. In a second experiment, multiple doses of the probiotics revealed significantly reduced spore numbers with 2.50 mg/mL Vetafarm Probotic, and 0.25, 1.25, and 2.50 mg/mL Protexin Concentrate single-strain. Mortality was also significantly reduced with 1.25 mg/mL Protexin Concentrate single-strain. N. ceranae-inoculated bees fed 3.75 mg/mL Vetafarm Probotic had higher survival than N. ceranae-inoculated bees, which was similar to that of non-inoculated bees, while N. ceranae-inoculated bees fed 2.50 mg/mL Protexin Concentrate single-strain, had significantly higher survival than both N. ceranae-inoculated and non-inoculated bees. Protexin Concentrate single-strain is promising as it can reduce N. ceranae proliferation and increase bee survivorship of infected bees, even compared to healthy, non-infected bees.
