Orv Hetil. 2020; 161(20) 829–838.PURPOSE To determine the prevalence and distribution of prosthetic complications affecting implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (ISFDPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS Subjects previously treated with one or more ISFDP(s) were identified from an electronic health record search and recalled for comprehensive clinical examination. Past prosthesis failures and complications were identified from the patient records while any existing complications, not previously recorded, were assessed during examination. ISFDP survival and failure rates were calculated with Kaplan-Meier curves and life table analysis, while regression Poisson analysis was used to identify associations between outcomes and possible patient- and prosthesis-based risk factors. RESULTS Seventy-four subjects with 107 ISFDPs were enrolled in the study with a mean time between prosthesis delivery and exam of 3.14 years (range 1.00-9.00 years). Four prostheses failed, resulting in a cumulative prosthesis survival rate of 96.26%. Prosthetic complications affected 48.59% of ISFDPs, the majority (94.87%) of them minor complications. Only the use of a nightguard was associated with a lower prevalence of prosthetic screw loosening (HR 0.11, 95% CI 0.02 - 0.59, P = 0.007) while no outcome differences were noted for other variables. Patient satisfaction was high regardless of presence or number of complications. CONCLUSIONS ISFDPs demonstrated a high survival rate and overall high, patient-reported satisfaction. Minor prosthetic complications were common but were only significantly associated with nightguard use. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. ANIMALS Nineteen dogs (25 eyes). METHODS Tear samples were collected using a Schirmer tear strip, from dogs with PACG (PACG-affected eyes, n = 8; unaffected eyes predisposed to PACG, n = 7), POAG (n = 4), and healthy controls (n = 6). Protein precipitation and trypsin digestion were performed for analyses via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Proteins were identified using the SwissProt protein sequence database. Relative protein expression in 17 eyes (15 dogs) was evaluated using Proteome Discoverer 2.0. buy Necrostatin-1 Pathway analyses were performed to investigate molecular mechanisms associated with primary glaucoma. RESULTS Unique peptides were identified in 505 proteins, with Major allergen Can f 1 and albumin identified with high confidence. Proteins unique to tears from diseased eyes (PACG n = 7; POAG n = 14) were identified. Nucleoside diphosphate was unique to tears in PACG eyes naïve to therapy, while retinal binding protein and NSFL1 cofactor p47 were unique to medicated PACG eyes. Relative expression of 34 proteins differed between disease states. Pathway analyses identified that the 'inflammatory response' was among the top disease/disorders in dogs with primary glaucoma (PACG and POAG) but not in healthy controls. CONCLUSION Tear samples suitable for mass spectrometry were readily obtained from pet dogs without needing specialized equipment. Further studies to validate the findings and explore potential candidate biomarkers for early disease detection and potential therapeutic targets are indicated. © 2020 American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.OBJECTIVE To investigate factors associated with alcohol use in adolescents, with the focus on analysing the comorbidities between single-occasion harmful-drinking episodes with mental health issues and risk behaviours. METHODS This study used data from the Young Minds Matter survey, designed to inform on the prevalence of the seven most common mental health disorders of children and adolescents. Logistic regression modelling was used to assess the odds of harmful drinking behaviour in young people aged 13-17 years in Australia. RESULTS We found a strong association between single-occasion harmful drinking and mental health issues, which hold after controlling for sociodemographic characteristics. Young people with severe mental health issues within the past year were four times more likely to have been drinking at harmful levels in the past 30 days. CONCLUSIONS Alcohol use can have adverse health effects among children and adolescents. Research has found a bidirectional association between alcohol use and mental health conditions where the presence of one issue almost doubles the risk of having the other issue. Implications for public health The comorbidity between these issues suggests the need for strategies to integrate policies addressing mental health and alcohol use disorders in young people. © 2020 The Authors.AIMS The reproducibility of carotid sinus massage (CSM) is debated. Aim of this study was to assess the reproducibility according to the methodology and diagnostic criteria defined by the guidelines on syncope of the European Society of Cardiology. METHOD Among 2800 patients with syncope who underwent CSM in the years 2005-2019, 109 patients (62 males; mean age 76±10 years), had performed a second CSM after a median of 28 months. Carotid sinus hypersensitivity (CSH) was diagnosed when CSM elicited a pause of >3s and/or a fall in systolic blood pressure >50 mmHg without reproduction of spontaneous symptoms. Carotid sinus syndrome (CSS) was established when spontaneous symptoms were reproduced in the presence of bradycardia and/or hypotension. RESULTS The reproducibility of CSM was 78% for 18 CSS patients, 41% for 29 CSH patients and 77% for 62 negative patients. The corresponding inter-rater agreement was good for CSS (Kappa = 0.66), moderate for negative CSM (Kappa = 0.42) and poor for CSH (Kappa = 0.30). Combining CSH and negative tests, their reproducibility rose to 90% with a kappa 0.66. CONCLUSION CSS but not CSH has a good reproducibility. About half of patients with CSH had a negative response at the second test, thus suggesting a great overlap between them. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
