Moreover, phages were isolated from the aforementioned clinical isolates and identified with electron microscope. Forty-five adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned in 3 groups (15 rats each), namely, the diabetic infected wound group, diabetic infected wound ceftriaxone-treated group, and the diabetic infected wound phage cocktail-treated group. The results revealed that phage cocktail had a superior effect over the ceftriaxone in wound healing parameters (wound size, wound index, wound bacterial load, and mRNA expression); wound healing markers (Cola1a, Fn1, MMP9, PCNA, and TGF-β); inflammatory markers (TNF-α, NF-κβ, IL-1β, IL-8, and MCP-1); anti-inflammatory markers (IL-10 and IL-4); and diabetic wound collagen deposition; and also the histomorphic picture of the diabetic infected wound. Based on the current findings, it could be speculated that phage therapy could be considered a novel antibiotic substitute in the DFU with MDR-polymicrobial infection therapeutic strategies.
Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) for peritoneal metastases of colorectal cancer (PMCRC) is associated with a high risk of postoperative morbidity, thus making patient selection of upmost importance. Further to data showing an association between preoperative serological biomarkers and patient outcome in various solid tumors, in this study we aim to evaluate their prognostic value in patients with PMCRC treated with curative intent.
This is a retrospective study including patients with PMCRC treated by complete CRS ± HIPEC at our institution between 2011 and 2020. Preoperative serological biomarkers, along with other standard clinicopathological variables, were studied to determine their prognostic value.
A total of 94 out of 108 patients met the inclusion criteria. Forty-three patients (46%) presented with synchronous PM. The median peritoneal cancer index (PCI) was 6. On univariate analysis, a higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was associated with poor prognosis in terms of overall survival (OS) [cutoff 3.567, hazard ratio (HR) 2.8 (1.4-5.3), p = 0.002], whereas a higher platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) predicted favorable prognosis in terms of disease-free survival (DFS) [cutoff 185.4, HR 1.9 (1.07-3.53), p = 0.030]. On multivariate analysis, NLR > 3.567, positive lymph nodes (LNs), and PCI > 7 were independent predictive factors for worse OS, whereas NLR > 3.567 and positive LNs were significantly associated with worse DFS. PLR > 185.4 was associated with better DFS.
High preoperative NLR (> 3.567) and PLR (> 185.4) can predict outcome of patients with PMCRC treated by complete CRS ± HIPEC.
185.4) can predict outcome of patients with PMCRC treated by complete CRS ± HIPEC.
Up to 25% of colorectal cancer patients present with synchronous liver metastases that can be treated with two operations or a single 'simultaneous' operation. Morbidity and mortality appear similar between approaches, however changes in health-related quality-of-life following simultaneous resection are not well reported.
A prospective, feasibility trial for simultaneous resection of synchronous colorectal liver metastases was conducted. Patients completed the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C30 and LMC21 at baseline (preoperatively), and 4 and 12weeks postoperatively. Week 4 and 12 scores were compared with baseline using t-tests. Minimally important clinical differences were considered as a 10-point difference from baseline.
C30 and QLQ-LMC21 were completed at baseline, 4weeks, and 12weeks by 39 (95%), 35 (85%) and 34 (83%) patients, and 39 (95%), 33 (80%) and 33 (80%) patients, respectively; 79% and 75% had at least one MICD according to QLQ-C30 at 4 and 12 weeks. At 4 weeks, physical functioning (mean difference (MD) - 11.9%, p = 0.002), role functioning (MD - 23.6, p = 0.007), and pain (MD + 19.7, p = 0.017) had significant worsening from baseline. At 12 weeks postoperatively, role functioning (MD - 19.7, p = 0.011) and fatigue (MD + 14.3, p = 0.03) were the only domains that remained significantly worse. By 12 weeks, pain and physical functioning had returned to baseline. There were no major demographic differences among those with and without an MICD at 12 weeks.
Simultaneous resection of colorectal liver metastases led to clinically significant worsening fatigue and role functioning that persisted at 12weeks post-surgery.
Simultaneous resection of colorectal liver metastases led to clinically significant worsening fatigue and role functioning that persisted at 12 weeks post-surgery.Ecological security assessment can effectively reflect the ecological status of a region and reveal its level of sustainable development. In this paper, an ecological security-oriented evaluation system was constructed, and the ecological security level of the Dongjiangyuan region from 2000 to 2020 was evaluated based on catastrophe theory and GIS. The results were as follows (1) As shown in the land use and cover maps, by 2020, the forestland area had decreased the most, and the artificial surface area had increased the most. (2) The ecological security index of the Dongjiangyuan region showed a low trend in the artificial surface area and its surrounding areas. The quite low values of the ecological security index in 2000 and 2010 were improved in 2020 due to the increase in ecological services capacity. The increased vegetation cover from 2000 to 2020 promoted the improved ecological service capacity. AZD9291 mouse (3) The rapid urbanization process in the Dongjiangyuan region resulted in a lower ecological sensitivity index value. Notably, the ecological sensitivity index of the study area had a slightly decreasing trend. (4) The spatial autocorrelation showed that the proportion of hot and cold spots from 2000 to 2020 decreased by 2.96% and 6.91%, respectively. This study can provide a scientific basis and decision-making guidance for ecological management in the Dongjiangyuan region in the future.
Dopamine agonist (DA) use is considered the main risk factor for impulse control disorder (ICD) development in Parkinson's disease (PD). Besides DAs, personality traits and cognitive features may represent risk factors for ICDs. The primary aim of this study was to investigate differences in DA plasma concentrations in PD patients with and without a positive screening for ICDs according to validated tools. The secondary aim was to compare the psychological profile between ICD positive and negative screened patients.
PD patients receiving chronic DA therapy were screened for ICDs according to the Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease (QUIP). Blood samples for measurement of DA (pramipexole, ropinirole, rotigotine) trough plasma concentrations were drawn in the morning, at mean 16-19h from the last DA dose. Patients' psychological profile was investigated by Millon Clinical Multiaxal Inventory III and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11).
One hundred and five PD patients n PD patients eligible for DA therapy.
The association between white matter (WM) lesions and Parkinson's disease (PD) was not fully established. We therefore applied Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to identify the causal effect between white matter lesions and PD.
We performed a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to investigate the association between three WM phenotypes-white matter hyperintensities (WMH, N = 18,381), fractional anisotropy (FA, N = 17,673), and mean diffusivity (MD, N = 17,467)-with PD (N = 482,730) using summary statistics from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, MR-Egger, and MR-PRESSO methods were used to evaluate the causal estimate.
Significant evidence was suggested that higher MD was associated with a higher PD risk (OR = 1.049, 95% CI = 1.018-1.081, p = 0.022) when the outlier was removed using MR-PRESSO method. Moreover, genetically predicted PD was associated with a lower WMH load (IVW β =- 0.047, 95% CI =- 0.085 to - 0.009, p = 0.016) and a higher FA (β = 0.185, 95% CI = 0.021-0.349, p = 0.027). No evidence of pleiotropy was found using MR-Egger intercept.
Our findings provided genetic support that white matter microstructural integrity lesions might increase the risk of PD. However, genetically predicted PD was potentially associated with a lower load of white matter lesions.

The study is crucial and cost-effective for reducing the chromium (VI) from industrial wastewater. In order to meet the sustainable development goal (SDG) objective 6.3, the capacity of Sambucus nigra L. to adsorb heavy metal is established with the purpose of eradicating hazardous chemical contamination and reducing pollution. In this study, discontinuous tests were carried out to determine the efficiency of Cr(VI) sorption on leaves of Sambucus nigra L. Adsorption factors such as pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, and contact time were evaluated. At a dosage of 3 g/L and pH 2, an efficiency of 98.22% was achieved under favorable conditions. The equilibrium and kinetic models that best fitted the experimental data are non-linear Freundlich and; pseudo-second order, and intra-particle diffusion, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption process, including Gibbs free energy (ΔG0), enthalpy (ΔH0), and entropy (ΔS0), were measured at 291, 303, 323, and 343 K, indicating that the phenomena was spontaneous and endothermic. The chemical analyses and surface morphology of the adsorbent were analyzed using SEM (scanning electron microscopy), EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy), FTIR (Fourier transform infra-red), XRD (X-ray diffraction), and ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical-emission spectroscopy) techniques. The results showed that Sambucus nigra L. has a significant removal efficiency of Cr(VI) in the contaminated solutions, establishing adsorbent as a low cost, readily available, and environmentally friendly and ensuring its potential for industrial usage. The enormous use of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) in different sectors may result in enhanced accumulation in agricultural soil, which could impose negative effects on crop productivity. Hence, strategies are needed to explore the mechanisms of copper oxide nanoparticle (CuO NP)-induced toxicity in crops. The present study aimed to investigate the involvement of ethylene in CuO NP-induced toxicity in rice seedlings. Here, our results indicate that 450 mg L-1 of CuO NPs induced toxic effects in rice seedlings. Thus, it was evidenced by the reduced plant biomass accumulation, enhanced oxidative stress indicators, and cellular ultrastructural damages. More importantly, the exogenous supply of ethylene biosynthesis and signaling antagonists cobalt (Co) and silver (Ag) respectively provided tolerance and improved the defense system of rice seedlings against CuO NP toxicity. The ethylene antagonists could significantly reduce the extent of ultrastructural and stomatal damage by controlling the ROS accumulation in rice seedlings under CuO NP stress.
