Radon-thoron discriminative measurements in the higher organic radiation regions of south western Cameroon.
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health issue. Elimination mandates collaboration between decision makers, practitioners and the community. Few studies address the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) from countries with low incidence.

Assess KAP regarding TB in Oman.

A cross-sectional survey based on validated questionnaire conducted via phone on randomly selected participants.

A total of 1048 participants completed the questionnaire. Males accounted for 63% (n=664) of respondents, Omanis 76% (n=796) and 18-39-year-olds 50% (n=527). The overall knowledge was fair (53%), overall attitude scored good and fair (46%) equally and a good score (78%) for overall practice. While female gender associated with higher knowledge (53.9%, n=201), males showed higher attitude and practice, (48.5%, n=322) and (80.3%, n=533) respectively. Omani nationality correlated with higher knowledge (49.1%, n= 391) and attitude (46.9%, n=373) whereas non-Omani nationality correlated with higher practice (85.3%, n=214). Literacy was associated with higher knowledge (73.3%, n=11) and attitude (60%, n=9).

Despite efforts by the Ministry of Health, more must be done to raise TB knowledge to encourage preferable attitudes and practice. Interventions to improve KAP are required to speed up disease reduction rate. Utilization of different resources, especially digital platforms, for knowledge dissemination should consider community diversity, including the presence of expatriates.

Recent advances in Treg cell biology have identified tissue-resident Tregs, with tissue-specific functions that contribute to the maintenance of tissue homeostasis and repair. A population of brain-resident Tregs, characterised as CD69+, has recently been identified in the healthy brain of mice and humans, with rapid population expansion observed under a number of neuroinflammatory conditions. During neuroinflammation, brain-resident Tregs have been proposed to control astrogliosis through the production of amphiregulin, polarize microglia into neuroprotective states, and restrain inflammatory responses by releasing IL-10. While protective effects for Tregs have been demonstrated in a number of neuroinflammatory pathologies, a clear demarcation between the role of circulatory and brain-resident Tregs has been difficult to achieve. Here we review the state-of-the-art for brain-resident Treg population, and describe their potential utilization as a therapeutic target across different neuroinflammatory conditions.
Sesame can cause severe allergic reactions and is a priority allergen in Canada.

To assess clinical characteristics and management of pediatric sesame-induced anaphylaxis and identify factors associated with epinephrine treatment.

Between 2011 and 2021, children with sesame-induced anaphylaxis presenting to 7 emergency departments (ED) in 4 Canadian provinces and 1 regional emergency medical service were enrolled in the Cross-Canada Anaphylaxis Registry. Standardized recruitment forms provided data on symptoms, severity, triggers, and management. Multivariate logistic regression evaluated associations with epinephrine treatment pre-ED and multiple epinephrine dosages.

Of all food-induced anaphylactic reactions (n=3279 children), sesame accounted for 4.0% (n=130 children), of which 61.5% were boys, and the average (SD) age was 5.0 (4.9) years. Hummus containing sesame paste triggered 58.8% of reactions. In the pre-ED setting, 32.3% received epinephrine, and it was more likely to be used in boys (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.27; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08-1.50) and those with a known food allergy (aOR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.11-1.68]). In the ED, 47.7% of cases received epinephrine, with older children more likely to receive multiple epinephrine doses (aOR, 1.00; 95% CI, 1.00-1.02).

In Canada, hummus is the major trigger of sesame-induced anaphylaxis. Knowledge translation focused on prompt epinephrine use and product-labeling policies are required to limit sesame reactions in communities.

Euscaphis konishii Hayata is a traditional medicinal plant in China, and its leaves are usually used to make dishes for hepatic or gastrointestinal issues by Chinese She nationality. Pharmacological analysis showed that E. konishii leaves contain high levels of flavonoids and chromones with favorable anti-hepatoma effect.

The extract from E. konishii leaves was detected to evaluate its chemical composition, and the alcoholic liver injury mice model was adopted to elucidate its hepatoprotective effects.

The total leaf extract from E. konishii was separated by polyamide column to get the flavonoid and chromone-rich extract (FCE). Single compounds from FCE was purified by gel and Sephadex LH-20 chromatography and analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The chemical component of FCE was confirmed and quantified by HPLC-MS. The OH·, O

, DPPH and ABTS
free radical assays were adopted to estimate the antioxidant activity of FCE in vitro. The alcohol-fed model mice were established to assess the hepatn of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) chaperones signaling and unfolded protein response (UPR) pathways to defense the ER-induced apoptosis. Pretreatment with FCE also restored the mitochondrial membrane potentials andadenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels, which in turn suppressed the Cytochrome C release and mitochondria-induced apoptosis.

FCE conferred great protection against alcoholic liver injury, which might be associated with its viability through suppressing reactive oxygen species (ROS) stress and hepatocyte apoptosis.

Xiao Bopi (XBP, སྐྱེར་བའི་བར་ཤུན།), as a classical Tibetan medicinal plant in China, which derived from the stem bark of Berberis dictyophylla F., has the function of "clearing heat and decreasing mKhris-pa". And it traditionally is utilized to treat the diabetes mellitus and its complications, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR). However, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

The purpose of this study aimed to explore the microvascular protection of water extract of XBP against the spontaneous retinal damage of db/db mice. Meanwhile, the underlying mechanisms of XBP on angiogenesis and apoptosis were further interpreted.

We firstly used high-performance liquid chromatography to detected the representative chemical ingredients in the water extract of XBP. The DR model of db/db mice was then randomly divided into five groups model group, calcium dobesilate (0.23g/kg) group, and the water extract of XBP (0.375, 0.75 and 1.5g/kg, respectively) groups. After 8 weeks of continuous administration, the param XBP against DR could attribute to alleviating angiogenesis and apoptosis by suppressing the HIF-1α/VEGF/DLL-4/Notch-1 pathway. This evidence sheds a new light on the potential mechanisms of XBP in the treatment of DR.This study aimed to determine the effects of UGT2B7 rs7662029 and rs7439366 polymorphisms on plasma buprenorphine (BUP) concentration and different treatment responses in a sample of 109 patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) treated with sublingual BUP/naloxone. Polymorphisms were analysed by PCR-RFLP. Plasma concentrations of BUP and its metabolite norbuprenorphine were detected by LC-MS/MS. Craving, withdrawal, depression and anxiety were measured by appropriate scales. OUD patients with rs7439366 CC or rs7662029 GG genotypes had significantly lower dose-normalized (BUP/D) and dose/kg-normalized BUP (BUP/D.kg-1) levels than those who were CT or AA carriers. Significant associations between UGT2B7 rs7662029 and increased craving (p = 0.037) and withdrawal symptoms (p = 0.029) were detected. Our findings were pointing to an important role of UGT2B7 in the metabolism of sublingual BUP/naloxone in the heroin addicts for the first time. A novel PCR-RFLP assay was developed for the determination of UGT2B7 rs7662029 polymorphism, based on utilizing novel restriction enzyme.Senecio spp. is one of the most frequent plant-related poisonings in cattle. Its ingestion generates the disease seneciosis, characterized by hepatic damages. Liver biopsies and serum markers dosage are tools used in diagnosis; however, many breeding cattle are undiagnosed. MicroRNAs are non-coding RNA, stable in biological fluids. Their difference in expression levels may indicate the presence of the poisoning. We analyzed the miRNA profiling to identify potential diagnostic biomarkers for Senecio brasiliensis poisoning. The expression of miR-21, miR-885, miR-122, miR-181b, miR-30a, miR-378, and let-7 f were evaluated in the serum of exposed cattle. At least one histological change was found in liver and lower quantity of albumin and high AST and ALP were also detected. MiRNAs miR-30a, miR-378, miR-21, miR-885, and miR-122 presented significantly higher expression in intoxicated animals than in healthy animals. Furthermore, miR-122, miR-885, and, especially, miR-21 signatures demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity, with potential application for detecting poisoning.Gentamicin is a highly effective antibiotic. However, its major complication is nephrotoxicity. This study investigated the beneficial effects of empagliflozin against gentamicin-induced nephropathy. Kidney damage was induced in male Wistar rats by administration of gentamicin (100 mg/kg/day, i.p.) for 8 days. Two doses of empagliflozin (10 and 20 mg/kg, p.o.) were concomitantly given with gentamicin for 8 days. Gentamicin administration increased serum creatinine, urea, and cystatin C concentrations. Empagliflozin in both doses ameliorated these changes via mitigation of gentamicin-induced increase in renal oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. Empagliflozin added to GM treatment led to lower measured levels of TGF-B, NF-κB and caspase 3, and only the higher dose increased PAX2 levels indicating an improvement in tubular regeneration. Additionally, empagliflozin (20 mg/kg/day) markedly prevented gentamicin-induced histopathological changes. The protective effects of empagliflozin may be mediated by decreasing gentamicin concentration in renal tissue and possibly other effects like antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects.
