Laboratory studies show the effects of night light on the physiology of the organisms. Limited studies have been conducted on birds in their natural habitat. Here, we studied the effects of the urban environment on reproduction-linked phenomenon and molecules involved in the regulation of seasonal breeding. Birds (N=5/time/site) were procured from urban and rural sites at specific times, i.e., in March (stimulatory phase), June (reproductive phase), September (refractory phase), and December (sensitive phase) of 2018. Immediately after procurement, birds were brought to the laboratory. Bodyweight, bill color, molt in body feathers, and testes size were recorded. The next day, all the birds were sacrificed in the middle of the day. Blood was collected and serum was used for ELISA of corticosterone, triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxine (T4). mRNA levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone-β (Tshβ), type 2 deiodinase (Dio2), type 3 deiodinase (Dio3), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRh), and gonadotropin inhibitory hormone (GnIh) were measured in hypothalamic tissue. Urban birds showed higher levels of corticosterone during the stimulatory phase. There was a delay in the initiation of testicular growth in urban birds and it was supported by reduced levels of T3 in blood plasma and relatively lower transcription of Dio2 and GnRH mRNA in urban birds. Our findings suggest that the urban environment delays the timing of reproduction in birds and could be the consequence of local environmental conditions.Humic acid (HA) is the most important precursor of toxic disinfection byproducts upon chlorination. Removing HA from water body is therefore critical in drinking water acquisition. In this research, ZnO nanoparticles are employed for photocatalysis under UV light at neutral pH to remove HA from a water environment. Almost 100% degradation of HA was achieved using 0.3 g/L of ZnO in 180 min with UV-A and UV-C light. Under identical experimental conditions, total organic carbon (TOC) removals reach 67% and 21% with UV-A and UV-C light, respectively. A higher degree of mineralization of HA is achieved with UV-A light although the degradation of HA is slightly better with UV-C light. This indicates that ZnO/UV-A has relatively low selectivity to degrade different compounds, including various intermediates from HA degradation. The use of UV-A light is therefore recommended for ZnO as it possesses higher mineralization ability. Negligible TOC is observed on the ZnO surface after photocatalytic reactions. In contrast, the adsorption of HA in dark conditions reaches 42% in 180 min. This strongly indicates that the adsorption of HA plays an important role in the photocatalytic degradation of HA, but it is not the main process for HA removal.Despite being important in the body's mechanisms, excessive accumulation of manganese (Mn) can induce severe toxicity in vital organs of the body. Thymoquinone (TQ) is extracted from Nigella sativa seeds which recently gained popularity as dietary supplements and plant-based antioxidants. Vildagliptin (VLD) is a dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) inhibitor, approved as anti-hyperglycemic agents with cardioprotective and renoprotective effects. The present study aimed to investigate the nephrotoxicity of Mn and the potential protective effects of thymoquinone and vildagliptin. Sixty-four adult male albino rats were equally divided into 8 groups group I (control, received no medication), group II (vehicle, received normal saline), group III (TQ, 50 mg/kg/day), group IV (VLD, 10 mg/kg/day), group V (MnCl2, 50 mg/kg/day), group VI (Mn+TQ), group VII (Mn+VLD), and group VIII (Mn+TQ+VLD). Groups VI, VII, and VIII, received the same previously mentioned doses. All drugs were orally gavaged for 12 weeks. Manganese administration resulted in an elevation in the levels of serum and tissues Mn, blood glucose, serum urea, creatinine, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and reduction in insulin, kidney superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), and interleukin-10. Histopathological structural renal damage was detected associated with strong positive immunoexpression of caspase-3. On the other hand, individual or combined TQ and VLD administration with Mn significantly decreased the serum and tissue levels of Mn, declined the blood glucose, inflammatory markers, oxidative stress markers, ameliorated the histopathological effects, and down-regulated the immunoexpression of caspase-3.
