Exploiting the solid-state drawing (SSD) process toward polymer materials for medical implant devices is of significance to simultaneously improve the mechanical property and biocompatibility. Herein, for the first time, the bionic implants with a microvalley surface of oriented long chain branching PLA (b-PLA) was fabricated by a feasible SSD process. The as-obtained b-PLAs could not only show a high tensile strength (278.1 MPa) and modulus (4.32 GPa) but also bear a superior protein adsorption as high as 622 ng/cm2. Such exceptional mechanical properties and biocompatibility could be ascribed to the SSD process-induced highly orientation degree and the morphology of parallel grooves within ridges structures, resulting in the greatly enhanced crystallinity and surface hydrophobicity as well as a biocompatible vascular endothelial microstructure for cell to adhesion and growth and thus an improved proliferation, differentiation, and activity of osteoblasts with spindle-shaped and spread morphology on surface of the b-PLAs. These findings may pave the way for designing the novel biomaterials for vascular stent or tissue engineering devices by the SSD process. To date, ionogel sensors have aroused the extensive interest as an alternative to hydrogel sensors, as they are promising materials to solve the problems of easy drying and easy freezing. However, the weak mechanical properties of ionogels have seriously hindered their large-scale application. Herein, a robust physically linked double-network ionogel (DN ionogel) was fabricated via interpenetrating a poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) network into an agarose network in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride. The DN ionogel possessed good mechanical properties, high transparency, extreme temperature tolerance, and excellent self-adhesion. The superior electromechanical properties render the DN ionogel as a perfect candidate to be utilized as a strain sensor to monitor various human activities. In addition, the DN ionogel exhibited reasonably high sensitivity to temperature. Therefore, it is believed that this high performance strain-temperature bimodal sensor offers a promising prospect in flexible intelligent electronics. We report on a quick, simple, and cost-effective solution-phase approach to prepare centimeter-sized morphology-graded vertically aligned Si nanowire arrays. Gradients in the nanowire diameter and shape are encoded through the macroscale substrate via a "dip-etching" approach, where the substrate is removed from a KOH etching solution at a constant rate, while morphological control at the nanowire level is achieved via sequential metal-assisted chemical etching and KOH etching steps. This combined approach provides control over light absorption and reflection within the nanowire arrays at both the macroscale and nanoscale, as shown by UV-vis spectroscopy and numerical three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations. Macroscale morphology gradients yield arrays with gradually changing optical properties. Nanoscale morphology control is demonstrated by synthesizing arrays of bisegmented nanowires, where the nanowires are composed of two distinct segments with independently controlled lengths and diameters. Such nanowires are important to tailor light-matter interactions in functional devices, especially by maximizing light absorption at specific wavelengths and locations within the nanowires. Background Patients with anorexia nervosa forgo eating despite emaciation and severe health consequences. Such dysfunctional decision-making might be explained by an excessive level of self-control, alterations in homeostatic and hedonic regulation, or an interplay between these processes. We aimed to understand value-based decision-making in anorexia nervosa and its association with the gut hormone ghrelin. Besides its homeostatic function, ghrelin has been implicated in the hedonic regulation of appetite and reward via the modulation of phasic dopamine signalling. Methods In a cross-sectional design, we studied acutely underweight (n = 94) and recovered (n = 37) patients with anorexia nervosa of the restrictive subtype, as well as healthy control participants (n = 119). We assessed plasma concentrations of desacyl ghrelin and parameters of delay discounting, probability discounting for gains and losses, and loss aversion. Results Recovered patients displayed higher risk aversion for gains, but we observed nontributing to disease maintenance; that is, in acutely underweight anorexia nervosa, a hungry state may facilitate the ability to forgo an immediate reward to achieve a (dysfunctional) long-term goal. © 2020 Joule Inc. or its licensorsPURPOSE The present study delves into the health inequalities between the two most socially deprived groups namely Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Scheduled Castes (SCs) in rural India. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH This study used health-specific three rounds of National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) unit-level data for analyses. Probit model has been used to predict the differences in access to maternal healthcare services. Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition method is used to explore the inequality in health of rural population in India and assess the estimated relative contribution of socioeconomic and demographic factors to inequalities in maternal health. FINDINGS The study establishes that STs women often perform poorly compared to SCs in terms of maternal health such as antenatal care, postnatal care and institutional delivery. Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition method shows that there exist health inequalities between STs and SCs women. Difference in household income contributes 21-34 percent and women's education 19-24 p Publishing Limited.Evidence for putative pathophysiological mechanisms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including peripheral inflammation, blood-brain barrier disruption, white matter alterations, and abnormal synaptic overgrowth, indicate a possible involvement of neuroinflammation in the disorder. Neuroinflammation plays a role in the development and maintenance of the dendritic spines involved in glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmission, and also influences blood-brain permeability. Cytokines released from microglia can impact the length, location or organization of dendritic spines on excitatory and inhibitory cells as well as recruit and impact glial cell function around the neurons. In this study, gene expression levels of anti- and pro-inflammatory signaling molecules, as well as oligodendrocyte and astrocyte marker proteins, were measured in both gray and white matter tissue in the anterior cingulate cortex from ASD and age-matched typically developing (TD) control brain donors, ranging from ages 4 to 37 years. see more Expression levels of the pro-inflammatory gene, HLA-DR, were significantly reduced in gray matter and expression levels of the anti-inflammatory gene MRC1 were significantly elevated in white matter from ASD donors as compared to TD donors, but neither retained statistical significance after correction for multiple comparisons.
