About Toto

Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from a Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.

The third album from Toto, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two hits with the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make Toto a household name across the globe.

After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is a departure from the ballads on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. The album was their first to go platinum in North America.

During the recording process of the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a new album and change their name to an alternative producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.

In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and begins an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa during a recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

Toto is an American rock band that enjoyed their greatest success during the eighties. The band was created by experienced session musicians and has sold more than 40 million albums in the world.

The first album by Toto was the self-titled Toto which was released in 1978. The album was a huge hit and launched the band into international fame. Since then, the group has released fourteen albums that have also been a hit.

Toto composed their first and only film score in 1984 for the film Dune. It was a massive undertaking that required the entire band to be involved. Kingdom of Desire was another successful album. After a world tour drummer Bobby Kimball left the band and was replaced by drummer Fergie Frederiksen of Le Roux. The band continued with their fifth studio album, Isolation. After Isolation Toto was put on break. This gave each member of the band the chance to explore their individual projects. In 1996, the group reformed for a tour and album. It was the first time in over a decade that all of the original members were together on stage.


The following year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members were together on stage at the same time. After that, the group was again disbanded. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in 31 years that all Toto's original members performed together. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

Toto is one of the most popular rock bands. They have had huge hits such as "Rosanna," Hold The Line," and "Africa," which has been certified as platinum 8X. The group's anthemic arena-rock is heavily influenced by a variety styles, including progressive rock, world rhythms jazz, and soul.

The band suffered numerous setbacks in their later years, despite their acclaim. In 2002 the drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group, and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence due to health reasons. Shem von Schröeck was brought in to replace him however, the group wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, a string lineup changes as well as a series of albums that were disappointing led Toto to break up for a few years. The group returned to touring in 2012 following the release of the album 40 Trips Around The Sun.

The album was a return form for the group, and the tour accompanied it with sold-out shows across North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was bolstered by the addition of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, both of whom had returned to the group.
