Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is a return to a traditional sextet style and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved ability on the drums and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate and less cloying than on previous performances.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released their new studio album just a few months after and embarked on a world tour promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released as a double album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to include a single song with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that limited his singing ability. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes and the other original members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the band. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was busy with Yes during that time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
