The animals in these groups were divided into two subgroups and euthanized at 30 or 90 days post-RI treatment. Changes in salivary 99mTc pertechnetate uptake and excretion were tracked by single-photon emission computed tomography. Salivary histological examinations and TUNEL assays were performed. The 99mTc pertechnetate excretion level recovered in the ALA treatment group. Salivary epithelial (aquaporin 5) cells of the ALA + RI group were protected from RI damage. The ALA + RI group exhibited more mucin-containing parenchyma and less fibrotic tissues than the RI only group. Fewer apoptotic cells were observed in the ALA + RI group compared to the RI only group. In an effort to better understand the virus cohort present in sugar beet roots exhibiting rhizomania disease symptoms, five independent RNA samples prepared from diseased beet seedlings reared in a greenhouse or from field-grown adult sugar beet plants and enriched for virus particles were subjected to RNAseq. In all but a healthy control sample, the technique was successful at identifying BNYVV and provided sequence reads of sufficient quantity and overlap to assemble > 98% of the published genome of the virus. Utilizing the derived consensus sequence of BNYVV, infectious RNA was produced from cDNA clones of RNAs 1 and 2. The approach also enabled the detection of beet soilborne mosaic virus (BSBMV), beet soilborne virus (BSBV),e genes used for sugar beet rhizomania disease management.Soluble sugars such as sucrose, glucose and fructose in plant host cells not only play the role as donors of carbon skeletons, but they may also induce metabolic signals influencing the expression of defense genes. These metabolites function in a complex network with many bioactive molecules, which independently or in dialogue, induce successive defense mechanisms. The aim of this study was to determine the involvement of sucrose and monosaccharides as signaling molecules in the regulation of the levels of phytohormones and hydrogen peroxide participating in the defense responses of Lupinus luteus L. to a hemibiotrophic fungus Fusarium oxysporum Schlecht f. sp. lupini. A positive correlation between the level of sugars and postinfection accumulation of salicylic acid and its glucoside, as well as abscisic acid, was noted. The duration of the postinfection generation of these molecules in yellow lupine was also variable.Connectedness to nature and nature contact can provide many benefits to humans, like stress reduction, recovery from illness, and increased positive emotions. Likewise, recreational horseback riding is a widespread sports activity with the potential to enhance physical and psychological health. Yet, the influence of connectedness to nature on the wellbeing of older aged recreational horseback riders has not been investigated so far. The aim of the present study therefore was to explore the relationship between nature relatedness and physical, psychological and social wellbeing and happiness. The study sample was composed of Austrian recreational horseback riders aged 45 years and older, who were compared with dog owners and people without pets (n = 178). We found significantly higher nature relatedness, significantly higher overall wellbeing and a significantly better mood rating in recreational horseback riders compared to people without pets and similar scores compared to dog owners. Physical wellbeing is correlated with overall nature relatedness in horseback riders and dog owners, but no correlation was found in people without pets. A structural equation model shows a direct relationship between nature relatedness and mood in horseback riders and an indirect relationship through pet attachment in dog owners. The results suggest the activity with horses and dogs in nature environments is a source of wellbeing, enjoyment, self-confidence and social contacts.Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious, highly prevalent public health problem associated with poor health outcomes, negative impacts on medication behavior, and increased health care utilization and costs. Pharmacists, the most accessible health care providers, are the only provider group not required to be trained on this topic. Training can prepare pharmacists to safely and appropriately care for patients experiencing IPV. This project evaluated a pharmacy-specific continuing professional development module on IPV utilizing a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest study design. Practicing community pharmacists were recruited from a market research panel to complete the online module. A novel method for managing IPV disclosures, the Care, Assess for safety, Refer, and Document (CARD) method, was included in the training. A total of 36 pharmacists completed the study, including a three-month follow-up assessment. Participants reported increased perceived preparedness and knowledge, workplace and self-efficacy, staff preparation, and legal requirements, but not actual knowledge. Practice changes, including identification of legal reporting requirements (19.4%) and development of protocols for managing IPV disclosures (13.9%), were reported at follow-up. This is the first examination of an educational module on the topic of IPV for pharmacists and it positively impacted pharmacists' preparedness and practice behaviors related to IPV over an extended follow-up period.The lifestyle adopted by most people in Western societies has an important impact on the propensity to metabolic disorders (e.g., diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases). Moving toward healthier dietary habits at the individual level and in publicly-funded institutions, such as schools or hospitals, could help improving public health, reducing healthcare costs and improving community resilience to epidemics (such as COVID-19), which predominantly affects individuals with metabolic diseases.This research aimed to assess the impact of cisplatin, depending on the concentration and exposure time, on the expression pattern of leptin in an endometrial cancer cell line. Ishikawa endometrial cancer cell cultures were incubated with cisplatin, at concentrations of 2.5-10 µM, or leptin in the concentration range 10-40 ng/mL, and for durations of 12, 24 and 48 h compared with the control. The microarray techniques RTqPCR; ELISA; and RNAi assay were used. Statistical analysis was performed at p less then 0.05. Already with the lowest concentration and incubation time, statistically substantial silencing of leptin expression on the mRNA level under the influence of cisplatin after its addition to the culture was observed. On the protein level, the expression for cisplatin at a concentration of 2.5 µM was only noticeable after 48 h of exposure and maintained themselves with consecutively larger concentrations. It was observed that cisplatin at a concentration of 5 µM is IC50 and the drug activated apoptosis via caspases -3 and -9. Cisplatin at a concentration of 5 µM and higher has a significant effect on the concentration of leptin. The effect of cisplatin on the expression profile of genes associated with leptin-dependent signaling pathways and changes in the expression of leptin itself and its receptors was confirmed. It was also confirmed that cisplatin exerted its effect via the leptin pathway.Quantifying myocardial T1 values has been useful for detecting and characterizing fibrotic appearance in myocardial infarction, focal scars, and non-ischemic cardiomyopathies. Since pancreatic exocrine function decreases with chronic pancreatic fibrosis advancement, this study examined the correlation between pancreatic T1 values and pancreatic exocrine and endocrine insufficiency. Methods Thirty-two patients underwent abdominal contrast-enhanced MRI in our department between October 2017 and February 2019. We evaluated the T1 values of the pancreas using a modified Look-Locker inversion recovery sequence (MOLLI), pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) by fecal elastase 1 (FE1) values, and pancreatic endocrine insufficiency using fasting insulin and blood glucose levels to calculate the HOMA-β. This trial is registered in the UMIN Clinical Trials Registry as UMIN 000030067. Results The median cohort (9 males and 23 females) age was 71 (range 49-84) years. Eighteen patients had pancreatic cysts, three had alcohol-induced chronic pancreatitis, three had pancreatic cancer, and eight possessed other pancreatic features (two patients each with autoimmune pancreatitis, acute pancreatitis, or a bile duct tumor, one with idiopathic chronic pancreatitis, and one healthy control with negative findings). The median pancreatic T1 value measured by the MOLLI was 857.5 ms (597-2569). A significant negative correlation was found between the T1 mapping and FE1 values (r = 0.69, p less then 0.01), with none for the T1 with HOMA-β or serum albumin, triglycerides, or body mass index. Conclusions the pancreatic T1 values correlated significantly with pancreatic exocrine function and might be useful in PEI diagnosis.
