The extended regimen (hormone-free interval not every month) was the most frequently used. Provider's knowledge about indications and benefits of those new regimens were satisfactory. However, scientific societies guidelines were poorly acquired.

Along with reinforcement of COC prescription guidelines for healthcare professionals, further researches are needed to better understand differences in tolerability and acceptability in terms of quality of life of the several potential regimens.

Balance is an important determinant of physical function and falls risk. The ability to withstand external perturbations is important when walking on icy or uneven surfaces, whether the perturbations are bilateral or unilateral.

This study sought to determine the effect of unilateral and bilateral standing perturbations on leg muscle activity in healthy older adults.

Participants experienced unilateral and bilateral standing perturbations of the treadmill. Surface electromyography (EMG) from lower limb muscles was recorded unilaterally. EMG onset latency and root mean square (RMS) amplitude of the muscle bursts were calculated.

Older adults demonstrated a combined ankle/hip strategy, along with pre-activation and co-contraction of muscles in response to unilateral and bilateral stance perturbations. As well, older adults demonstrated higher levels of EMG, but no difference in the latency of burst onset, in bilateral than unilateral perturbation types.

When the stance limb was perturbed in the bilateral condition, the older adults responded with a Gastrocs EMG burst nearly 100% of the maximum EMG. The high level of EMG used, especially in the Gastrocs, during the bilateral perturbations may reduce the safety factor for falls in older adults. Older adults responded to the different perturbation demands by modulating EMG amplitude as opposed to the onset timing of EMG.

Exposure of BEAS-2B cells cultured in 2D to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) increased TGF-β1 protein expression and reduced the expression of epithelial cell markers, whereas mesenchymal markers are upregulated. Conventional 2D cell culture may, however, not fully reflect the physiology of bronchial epithelial cells in vivo. To simulate the in vivo situation more closely we cultured the bronchial epithelial cells in a 3D environment in the current study. Treatment of epithelial spheroids with TGF-β resulted in reduced E-cadherin and increased collagen I expression, indicating the activation of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Similarly, exposure of spheroids to DEP induced and EMT-like phenotype. Collectively, our data indicate AP induces an EMT-like phenotype of BEAS-2B cells in 3D spheroid cultures. The presence of depressive symptoms is associated with increasing risks of hip fractures (HFs). However, few studies investigated the longitudinal relationship between depressive symptoms and incident HFs among Chinese older adults, and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

To investigate the association between depressive symptoms and incident HFs, and the mediating role of cognitive function and impairment in activities of daily living (ADL) in the association among the older adults in China.

This population-based cohort study included 6336 Chinese older adults (age range, 60-101years) without the history of HFs at baseline and with complete data during the follow-up. Discrete-time Cox regression was used to evaluate the relationship between depressive symptoms and incident HFs, and bootstrapped multiple mediation analyses were conducted to examine the effects of cognitive function and ADL impairment on the association.

In this study, using a combination of in silico analyses, we identified the tensilin present in the dermis of Holothuria forskali, Hf-(D)Tensilin. Anti-peptide antibodies showed that this protein is localised in the secretory granules of type 2 juxtaligamental-like cells, a MCT specific cell type. We then used the bacterium E. coli to produce recombinantly Hf-(D)Tensilin and confirmed its stiffening effect on pieces of the dermis and its aggregation effect on collagen fibrils extracted from the sea cucumber dermis.
