In the first activation step, IFNγ was reduced in welders compared to non-welders and in the GMAW welders with higher concentrations of respirable particles compared to the lower exposed TIG welders. IFNγ was not influenced by tobacco smoking and correlated negatively with welding-fume exposure, respirable manganese, and iron. In the second activation step, NTHi and LPS induced additional IFNγ, which was reduced in current smokers compared to never smokers in welders as well as in non-welders. Analyzing both activation steps together, IFNγ production was lowest in smoking welders and highest in never smoking non-welders. IL-2 was not associated with any of these parameters. Welding-fume exposure might suppress Th1-based immune responses due to effects of particulate matter, which mainly consists of iron and manganese. For responses to NTHi this is strongest in smoking welders because welding fume suppresses T-cell activation towards Th1 and cigarette smoke suppresses the subsequent Th1-response to NTHi via LPS. Both effects are independent from IL-2-regulated T-cell proliferation. In this study, an efficient approach to the preparation of Egeria najas-derived biochar supported nZVI composite is first developed for Cr(VI) removal in wastewater. The adsorption behavior and mechanism of Cr(VI) removal on the as-prepared Egeria najas-derived biochar/nZVI (EN@nZVI) composite were investigated. The results of FTIR and XPS indicate that the EN@nZVI surface had many functional groups such as R-COOH, R-OH, R-NH2 and R-C-O-C, etc, which could provide active sites during the adsorption process. The BET results showed that the EN@nZVI had large specific surface area and average pore, which were 142.49 m2/g and 9.85 nm, respectively. EN@nZVI demonstrated high reactivity for Cr(VI) removal. Compared with nZVI, Cr(VI) removal efficiency by EN@nZVI is 50% higher than that of nZVI within 0.5 h. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cr (VI) was 56.79 mg/g and the energy of activation (Ea) was 31.30 kJ/mol. The adsorption process was well described by the pseudo-second order model and Sips adsorption isotherm model. The reaction mechanism of Cr(VI) removal was a multi-step removal mechanism, involving adsorption, surface complex formation, reduction and ion exchange reaction.
Childhood cancer is a chronic disease with high survival rates. Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) can still face health effects later in their lives. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the factors that modify it allow CCS and their families to improve care in the long-term follow-up. This study aims to (1) examine the differences in HRQoL between CCS of extracranial malignancies and a comparison group, and (2) explore the clinical, environmental and lifestyles factors implicated in the HRQoL of CCS.

In this cross-sectional study with a case vs. non-case comparison, the HRQoL of 117 CCS between 8 and 18 years old was compared with healthy non-cases paired by sex and age. The Pediatric Environmental History (PEHis) was applied to obtain information on sociodemographic, clinical, environmental and lifestyle factors. The PedsQL™ Generic Core Scales questionnaire was used to evaluate HRQoL.

In the multivariate analysis among the CCS, the following variables were significantly associated with HRQoL Poor outdoor air quality (Total, Psychosocial, Emotional, Social and School domains); household income (Total, Psychosocial and School domains); and the presence of late effects (Total, Physical, Psychosocial, and Social domains); regular contact with nature (Physical domain); and the daily hours of screen-time (Emotional domain). CCS present HRQoL results superior to the non-cases group in the physical domain (86.10 vs. 80.34; p=0.001), finding no differences in the other domains evaluated.

A central composite design that included five design points was used to determine the condition parameters for hydrothermal reaction time (1-5 h) and hydrothermal temperature (120-180 °C). A statistical method was used to observe the effects of hydrothermal conditions on the material properties and photocatalytic activity of a Fe-TiO2 nanotube catalyst. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis shows the iron is doped on the TNTs, which is further confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction indicate the existing states of iron in the form of iron oxide on the TNT. The maximum degradation efficiency (92.3%) was achieved at a hydrothermal temperature of 150 °C and time of 3 h. It is found that the optimal medication of the Fe-TNT catalyst occurred at a particular combination of temperature (150 °C) and reaction time (3 h), that provide the more active sites for iron to enter the crystal lattice of TNT, and that the maximum CR degradation could be achieved.In the present study, a previously capped waste disposal site at Kollevåg (Norway) was selected to study the effects of contaminant leakage on biomarkers associated with Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) reproductive endocrinology and development. Outdoor workers are at risk of prolonged and high solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure, which is known to cause skin cancer. The objectives of this study were to characterize the UVR exposure levels of outdoor workers in Alberta, Canada, and to investigate what factors may contribute to their exposure.

This study collected objective solar UVR measurements from outdoor workers primarily in Alberta during the summer of 2019. Workers were recruited via the management or health and safety teams from building trade unions and employers. Calibrated, electronic UVR dosimeters were worn by workers on their hardhats, wrists, or lapels for five working days. Data on workers' demographics, jobs, sun protection behaviors, and personal risk factors were collected using questionnaires, and meteorological data for each sampling day were noted. Mean daily exposure measured as the standard erythemal dose (SED) was calculated and compared to the international occupational exposure limit guideline (1.3 SED). Marginal r of hours outside at work were statistically significant.

However, limited data was available for urinary Pb and Hg levels in young children and the proportion of children at risk by age, as well as inter- and intra-subject variations of urinary Pb and Hg levels. Therefore, we collected total 491 urine samples from 241 children by urine collection at birth and at intervals of 3 months until 27 months of age for each child (at 10 monitoring time points), measured urinary Pb and Hg levels, and then evaluated the proportion of children at risk by age and the intra-class correlation (ICC) of the urinary Pb and Hg levels. Both the urinary Pb and Hg levels were significantly different according to the monitoring time points (p less then 0.0001 for both Pb and Hg). The number of children with Hg level over the Human BioMonitoring (HBM) I (7 μg/L) and II (25 μg/L) in the first urine at birth were 3 (2.2%) and 1 (0.7%), respectively, while the urinary samevels in any other bio-samples such as bloods. Therefore, to explore the Pb and Hg exposures using urine samples warrant further investigation with large sample size considering urinary correction and other bio-samples in the future.
