The abyss (3500-6500 m) covers the bulk of the deep ocean floor yet little is known about the extent of plastic debris on the abyssal seafloor. Using video imagery we undertook a quantitative assessment of the debris present on the abyssal seafloor (5700-5800 m depth) beneath the Kuroshio Extension current system in the Northwest Pacific. This body of water is one of the major transit pathways for the massive amounts of debris that are entering the North Pacific Ocean from Asia. Shallower sites (1400-1500 m depth) were also investigated for comparison. The dominant type of debris was single-use plastics - mainly bags and food packaging. The density of the plastic debris (mean 4561 items/km2) in the abyssal zone was the highest recorded for an abyssal plain suggesting that the deep-sea basin in the Northwest Pacific is a significant reservoir of plastic debris.A short overview of Dante Alighieri's ideas on mind and brain is given using the framework of the philosophy and science of his time, and with quotations from his works. The structure of the mind was divided by the Italian poet into cognitive and affective components, each with physiological and cerebral bases. The connection between cognition and action was underlined in a perspective that valued the work of individuals in their social world.
Publications investigating the efficacy of surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) have increased exponentially. However, there is currently no standardized reporting structure for these studies, rendering both comparisons and extrapolation problematic.
A subject matter expert group was formed by the Chest Wall Injury Society. This group conducted a review of the SSRF investigational literature and identified variable reporting within several general categories of relevant parameters. A compliment of guidelines was then generated.
The reporting guidelines consist of 26 recommendations in the categories of (1) study type, (2) patient and injury characteristics, (3) patient treatments, (4) outcomes, and (5) statistical considerations.
Our review identified inconsistencies in reporting within the investigational SSRF literature. In response to these inconsistencies, we propose a set of recommendations to standardize reporting of original investigations into the efficacy of SSRF.

During the first months of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, Spain had the highest mortality rate and the second-highest infection rate in the world.
To analyze the occupational situation of dentists, hygienists, and dental auxiliary staff during the peak of the pandemic, after the state of alarm was declared in Spain, and when the state of alarm was declared. In addition, a possible relationship between the geographical distribution of infected people and the availability of individual protection systems was investigated.
A cross-sectional questionnaire was answered by 6470 dentists and dental staff via WhatsApp and social media.
A total of 1 in 4 dental professionals ceased working completely. Of those that kept working, 25.28% of dentists and 19.61% of hygienist-auxiliary were equipped with filtering face piece (FFP) 2 masks (P < .05), and 61.8% complied with the official protection recommendations set by the General Council of Dentists of Spain. Nearly 59.4% of respondents had sessary to care for patients, a situation that justified the reduction in scheduled dental care and only emergencies being treated. The Spanish geographical regions with the highest number of contagions had the least amount of individual protective resources (FFP2 and FFP3 masks).
The relationship of apical periodontitis (AP) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is poorly studied in large populations. XMU-MP-1 The aims of this study were to determine if there is an independent association between AP and T2DM in a large hospital network after controlling for confounding variables, as well as to determine if glycated hemoglobin levels were independently associated with AP.
An initial search of the Carolina Data Warehouse for Health yielded 5,995,011 patients, of whom 7,749 were diagnosed with AP in 2015 through 2018. Patients' demographics, T2DM status, HbA
, periodontal disease, oral cellulitis, hypertension, atherosclerosis, kidney disease, smoking, body mass index, the use of metformin or statins, and hospital inpatient status were collected from their most recent visit. A control group of 7,749 patients without AP were sampled and matched according to the age, race, and sex of each patient with AP. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine the association between T2DM and AP, as protective in this relationship.
To describe the trends and characteristics of oocyte cryopreservation (OC) cycles stratified by self-reported race/ethnicity in the United States DESIGN Retrospective cohort analysis using the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology Clinical Outcome Reporting System SETTING US fertility clinics PATIENTS All patients undergoing OC from 2012 through 2016 INTERVENTIONS None MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The OC cycle trends were analyzed on the basis of race/ethnicity non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, Asian/Pacific islander, Hispanic, and other (American Indian, Alaskan native, or mixed race).
Between 2012 and 2016, there was a total of 29,631 OC cycles; the total number of cycles increased yearly from 2,925 in 2012 to 8,828 in 2016. When compared with the demographics of the United States, OC was underused by some minority patient groups because majority of the cycles (66.5%) were performed in white patients. The total number of OC cycles increased annually among all the ethnic groups, most notably among s. Future research regarding subsequent thawing outcomes is warranted.
To report a successful case of ovarian hyperstimulation and oocyte cryopreservation in a transgender male adolescent after suppression with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist while using the aromatase inhibitor letrozole to maintain low serum estradiol.
Case report.
Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, St Louis, Missouri.
A 15-year-old Tanner II transgender male adolescent with a GnRH agonist implant.
The GnRH agonist implant was removed. The patient was given letrozole (5 mg daily) while undergoing ovarian stimulation with an antagonist protocol. After oocyte retrieval, the patient began taking testosterone.
Successful oocyte cryopreservation with minimal changes in breast budding.
The patient's peak serum estradiol concentration was 510 pg/mL. Twenty-two mature oocytes were cryopreserved. Small increases in breast budding occurred between baseline and the time of oocyte retrieval.
We successfully used letrozole to maintain low serum estradiol in a transgender male adolescent during ovarian stimulation. Maintaining low estradiol to minimize pubertal development and possibly prevent gender dysphoria symptoms may make oocyte cryopreservation more desirable for transgender male adolescents.

In the general adult population, lymphopaenia is associated with an increased risk for hospitalisation with infection and infection-related death. The quality of evidence and strength of association between perioperative lymphopaenia across different surgical procedures and mortality/morbidity has not been examined by systematic review or meta-analysis.
We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Cochrane databases from their inception to June 29, 2020 for observational studies reporting lymphocyte count and in-hospital mortality rate in adults. We defined preoperative lymphopaenia as a lymphocyte count 1.0-1.5×10
L
. Meta-analysis was performed using either fixed or random effects models. Quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The I
index was used to quantify heterogeneity. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality rate and mortality rate at 30 days.
Eight studies met the inclusion criteria for meta-analysis, comprising 4811 patients (age range, 46-91 yr; female, 20-79%). These studies examined preoperative lymphocyte count exclusively. Studies were of moderate to high quality overall, ranking >7 using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Preoperative lymphopaenia was associated with a threefold increase in mortality rate (risk ratio [RR]=3.22; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.19-4.72; P<0.01, I
=0%) and more frequent major postoperative complications (RR=1.33; 95% CI, 1.21-1.45; P<0.01, I
=6%), including cardiovascular morbidity (RR=1.77; 95% CI, 1.45-2.15; P<0.01, I
=0%), infections (RR=1.45; 95% CI, 1.19-1.76; P<0.01, I
=0%), and acute renal dysfunction (RR=2.66; 95% CI, 1.49-4.77; P<0.01, I
=1%).
Preoperative lymphopaenia is associated with death and complications more frequently, independent of the type of surgery.

Cervical cancer prevention guidelines include Human Papillomavirus (HPV) test, cytology, and HPV-16/18 typing for triage to determine the risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grade 3 as the best proxy of cervical cancer risk. In doing that, they do not consider how age can modify the type-specific risk of CIN3. The present study aimed to evaluate the age-related distribution of HPV genotypes affecting the risk-assessment in cervical cancer screening programs non-screening-type-HPV and non-HPV-16/18 in unvaccinated women with CIN3.
Retrospective multi-institutional study, including HPV genotyped women with CIN3 on cone histology treated between 2014 and 2019. The sample was divided into three categories of age <30, 30-44, ≥45. HPV genotypes were grouped in non-screening-type-HPV (not-including genotypes 16/18/31/33/35/39/45/51/52/56/58/59/66/68) and non-HPV-16/18. Associations and trends between different age-groups and HPV genotypes were measured.
1332 women were analyzed. Non-screening-tcer associated with HPV types. The risk-based recommendation should take into consideration age to define the management of HPV positive women.
Despite radical surgery and chemotherapy, most patients with ovarian cancer die due to disease progression. M-Trap is an implantable medical device designed to capture peritoneal disseminated tumor cells with the aim to focalize the disease. This trial analyzed the safety and performance of the device.
This first-in-human prospective, multi-center, non-blinded, single-arm study enrolled 23 women with high-grade serous advanced ovarian cancer. After primary or interval debulking surgery, 3 M-Trap devices were placed in the peritoneum of the abdominal cavity. 18-months post-implantation or at disease progression, devices were initially removed by laparoscopy. The primary safety endpoint was freedom from device and procedure-related major adverse events (MAEs) through 6-months post-implantation compared to an historical control. The primary performance endpoint was histopathologic evidence of tumor cells capture.
Only one major adverse event was attributable to the device. 18 women were free of device and procedure related MAEs (78.
