Objective Pure tone audiometry may seem to be a relatively easy task for the participant but it may involve cognitive as well as sensory abilities. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between hearing thresholds in the frequency range 0.125-8 kHz and the core executive function cognitive flexibility in healthy individuals with normal hearing.Design Experimental study measuring correlations between different pure-tone hearing threshold measures and cognitive flexibility. Pure tone air conduction audiometry (frequencies 0.125-8.0 kHz) and two tests of cognitive flexibility (information updating and shifting ability) were conducted.Study sample Seventy-two subjects (aged between 21 and 36) with normal hearing ( less then 20 dB HL) for the tested frequencies. Results Four measures of average pure tone hearing thresholds were negatively correlated with cognitive flexibility. Conclusions Pure-tone air conduction hearing thresholds seem to be related to cognitive flexibility in healthy individuals with normal hearing.Introduction Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide because of difficulties in early diagnosis. Aberrant glycosylation in serum proteins has been associated with many human diseases. Serum haptoglobin, a highly sialylated glycoprotein with four N-glycosylation sites, has gained considerable attention due to its potential as a signature molecule to display aberrant glycosylation in inflammatory disorders and various types of cancer. In particular, the relevance of haptoglobin glycosylation in GC has been investigated in a multifaceted way.Areas covered The screening of haptoglobin glycosylation could offer an alternative approach toward GC diagnosis and detection. In this report, various assay platforms such as glycan profiling, site-specific glycopeptide profiling, and intact protein profiling are introduced for the detection of abnormal glycosylation of serum haptoglobin.Expert opinion Although aberrant glycosylation of serum haptoglobin is associated with gastric cancer patients and might be a promising marker of GC screening, the development of a diagnosis platform to increase specificity and sensitivity for clinical use is still an analytical challenge. However, the continuous advancement of analytical technologies and methods will spur the paradigm shift from traditional serum markers, enabling the effective mining of human glycoproteome for GC diagnostic markers.'Lung particle overload' refers to the impaired lung particle clearance and increased particle retention occurring with high lung doses of poorly soluble low toxicity (PSLT) particles. In rats, lung particle overload is associated with inflammation, epithelial hyperplasia, and, in extreme cases, lung cancer. While the human relevance of rat lung tumors occurring under overload has been questioned, recent regulatory decisions have considered these outcomes evidence of possible human hazard. To better understand the state-of-the-science on PSLT toxicology, an Expert Workshop was held to document agreements and differences amongst a panel of highly experienced scientists and regulators. Key outcomes included a functional definition of PSLTs; agreement the rat is a sensitive model for PSLT inhalation toxicology; identifying lung inflammation as a critical endpoint for PSLT risk assessment; and, agreement rat lung cancer occurring only under conditions of lung particle overload does not imply a cancer hazard for humans under non-overloading exposures. Moreover, when asked - should PSLTs be considered as human lung carcinogens based on rat data alone (and no supporting data from other species), the expert consensus was 'No. However, the experts noted the current default regulatory position on rat lung overload data alone would be the suspicion of human carcinogen hazard.' The many areas of the expert agreement provide guidance for design, interpretation, and extrapolating PSLT inhalation toxicology studies. Considering the workshop outcomes, the authors recommend guidelines for evaluation and classification of PSLT be reassessed; and, prior decisions on PSLT hazard classification be revisited to determine if they remain appropriate.Aims Microcapsules comprising of a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) shell and friction modifier (FM) core were prepared to reduce the friction and extend the service life of engine lubricating oil. Methods Microcapsules containing both organic FM and molybdenum FM were produced via solvent evaporation technique. The friction coefficient, thermal stability, and chemical composition of microcapsules were investigated. Results The incorporation of microcapsules in lubricating oil dramatically reduced the friction coefficient to be lower than that of virgin FM. EGFR assay Organic FM and molybdenum FM are compatible during the encapsulation process. The release of the FM inside the microcapsules was controllable by thermal degradation of polymeric shell at 150 °C or mechanical rupture at room temperature. Conclusions This study provided a novel approach to improve the tribological properties of lubricating oil with long service life, facile fabrication and low cost and will find potential applications in lubrication industry for internal combustion engines.Due to the massive increase in non-ionizing radiation emitting devices, the social concern about the possible malignancy to its exposure has increased the research interest. The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) included the radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) of mobile phones on the category 2B as 'possibly' carcinogenic to humans. Epidemiological studies noticed a causal association between the exposure to RF-EMF and the incidence of brain neoplasm in different populations, since this is the organ with the highest specific absorption rate. The fact that so many of the ipsilateral tumors found are statistically significant with RF-EMF exposure provides weight suggesting causality. In this way, the higher the exposure (ipsilateral vs contralateral), the longer the cumulative exposure (hours of exposure) and the longer the latency (beyond 10 years); the greater the risk. In addition, considering together all of these parameters suggest a strong causality.
