Due to the complex structure of liver tumors and the low contrast with normal tissues make it still a challenging task to accurately segment liver tumors from CT images. To address these problems, we propose an end-to-end segmentation method for liver tumors.

The method uses a cascade structure to improve the network's extraction of information. First, the Side-output Feature Fusion Attention block is used to fuse features at different levels and combine with attention mechanism to focus on important information. Then, the Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling Attention block is used to extract multi-scale semantic features. Finally, the Multi-scale Prediction Fusion block is used to fully fused the features captured at each layer of the network.

To verify the performance of the proposed model and the effectiveness of each module, we evaluate it on LiTS and 3DIRCADb datasets and obtained Dice per Case of 0.665 and 0.719, respectively, and Dice Global of 0.812 and 0.784, respectively.

The proposed method is compared with the basic model 3D U-Net, as well as some mainstream methods based on U-Net variants, and our method achieves better performance on the liver tumor segmentation task and is superior to most segmentation algorithms.

We aim to develop quantitative performance metrics and a deep learning model to objectively assess surgery skills between the novice and the expert surgeons for arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery. These proposed metrics can be used to give the surgeon an objective and a quantitative self-assessment platform.

Ten shoulder arthroscopic rotator cuff surgeries were performed by two novices, and fourteen were performed by two expert surgeons. These surgeries were statistically analyzed. Two existing evaluation systems Basic Arthroscopic Knee Skill Scoring System (BAKSSS) and the Arthroscopic Surgical Skill Evaluation Tool (ASSET), were used to validate our proposed metrics. In addition, a deep learning-based model called Automated Arthroscopic Video Evaluation Tool (AAVET) was developed toward automating quantitative assessments.

The results revealed that novice surgeons used surgical tools approximately 10% less effectively and identified and stopped bleeding less swiftly. Our results showed a notable differAVET show that the capability of the toolbox can be extended to create a fully automated performance evaluation platform.A novel Gram-stain negative, aerobic and ovoid to short rod shaped bacterium with a single polar flagellum, named strain B57T, was isolated from sediment of Clam Island, Liaoning Province, China. The optimal growth of this strain was found to occur at 37 °C, pH 6-6.5, and in the presence of 2% (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain B57T forms a distinct lineage within the family Rhodobacteraceae, sharing high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Sinirhodobacter populi sk2b1T (97.4%). The average amino acid identity of B57T and the closely related species were lower than the threshold level for genus delineation. The dominant respiratory quinone of strain B57T was identified as Q-10. The major fatty acids were found to be Summed Feature 8 (C181ω7c and/or C181ω6c), Summed Feature 3 (C161ω7c and/or C161ω6c) and C16 0. The polar lipids were identified as phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified phospholipids, one unidentified glycolipid, and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G + C content of strain B57T was determined to be 64.1 mol%. Based on the biochemical, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic analysis, strain B57T is concluded to represent a novel species of a novel genus, for which the name Sedimentimonas flavescens gen. nov., sp. nov.is proposed. The type strain is B57T (= CGMCC1.19488T = KCTC 92053T).Changes to how gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) connect with each other and with their communities have implications for HIV prevention. Social engagement with gay men (defined as having friends who are gay men and spending time with them) has been associated with HIV related outcomes over time among Australian GBM. Using data collected in national, repeated, cross-sectional surveys of GBM between 1998 and 2020 (N = 161,117), analyses of trends in the prevalence of gay social engagement (GSE) in Australia were conducted using linear regression. To assess changing associations with GSE at different time points in the HIV epidemic, three cross-sectional analyses were conducted on factors associated with high and low GSE in 1999/2000, 2009/2010, and 2019/2020 using bivariate and multivariable logistic regression. GSE (scored from 0 to 7) declined among all participants from 4.76 in 1998 to 4.04 in 2020 (p  less then  0.001) with a steeper decline among GBM aged under 25 years from 4.63 in 1998 to 3.40 in 2020 (p  less then  0.001). In all timepoints, high GSE was associated with older age, being university educated, full time employment, identifying as gay, recent HIV testing, and PrEP uptake. While mostly associated with protective behaviors, high GSE was also associated with some practices that may put GBM at risk of HIV infection such as drug-enhanced sex and group sex in the most recent timepoint. Changing levels of GSE have implications for health promotion among GBM, particularly how to engage GBM less connected to gay social networks.Herbaspirillum seropedicae is a plant growth-promoting bacteria isolated from diverse plant species. In this work, the main objective was to investigate the efficiency of H. seropedicae strain SmR1 in colonizing and increasing maize growth (DKB 390 variety) in the early stages of development under greenhouse conditions. Inoculation with H. seropedicae resulted in 19.43 % (regarding High and Low N controls) and 10.51% (regarding Low N control) in mean of increase of root biomass, for 1st and 2nd greenhouse experiments, respectively, mainly in the initial stages of plant development, at 21 days after emergence (DAE). Quantification of H. seropedicae in roots and leaves was performed by quantitative PCR. H. seropedicae was detected only in maize inoculated roots by qPCR, and a slight decrease in DNA copy number g-1 of fresh root weight was observed from 7 to 21 DAE, suggesting that there was initial effective colonization on maize plants. H. seropedicae strain SmR1 efficiently increased maize root biomass exhibiting its potential to be used as inoculant in agricultures systems.PHS21 against Pseudoalteromonas is isolated from Qingdao offshore seawater. The phage was characterized and identified by morphological examination, stability, whole genome sequencing, and bioinformatics analysis. Morphological analysis of PHS21 by transmission electron microscopy shows that belonged to the Siphoviridae family. PHS21 showed strong tolerance with a wide range of temperatures and pH. One-step growth assay indicates that the latent period is about 48 min and the burst size is approximately 218 PFU/cell (plaque forming unit/cell). Its complete genomic sequence is 35,802-bp long with 50 putative open reading frames. Selleck LY3473329 Phage PHS21 and PHS3 displayed a very close evolutionary relationship; however, having different DNA packaging proteins indicates that they may have already evolved distinct ways to package DNA in host cells. This study provides the detailed description and genomic characterization of a novel Pseudoalteromonas phage.
In multiple sclerosis, the correlation between white matter lesion volumes (LV) and expanded disability status scale (EDSS) is at best moderate, leading to the "clinico-radiological paradox", influenced by many factors, including the lack of information on the spatial localisation of each lesion on synthetic metrics such as LV. We used a probabilistic approach to provide the volume of WM tracts that may be disconnected by lesions and to evaluate its correlation with EDSS.

Forty-five patients (aged 37.4 ± 6.8 years, mean ± standard deviation; 30 females; 29 relapsing-remitting, 16 progressive) underwent 3-T magnetic resonance imaging. Both LV and the volume of the tracts crossing the lesioned regions (disconnectome volume, DV) were calculated using BCBtoolkit and correlated with EDSS.

T1-weighted LV and DV significantly correlated with EDSS (p ≤ 0.006 r ≥ 0.413) as it was for T2-weighted LV and T2-weighted DV (p ≤ 0.004 r ≥ 0.430), but only T1-weighetd and T2-weighted DVs were EDSS significant predictors (p ≤ 0.001). The correlations of T1-weighted and T2-weighted LV with EDSS were significantly mediated by DV, while no effect of LV on the EDSS-DV correlation was observed.

The volume of disconnected WM bundles mediates the LV-EDSS correlation, representing the lonely EDSS predictor.

Growth trends of young forests with even-aged stands recruited recently when the climate became warmer and drier are not well known. We analyze the radial growth response of young conifer trees (37-63 years old) to climatic parameters and drought stress employing Pearson correlations and the Vaganov-Shashkin Lite (VS-Lite) model. This study uses tree rings of six species of conifer trees (Pinus teocote, Pinus pseudostrobus, Pinus pinceana, Pinus montezumae, Pinus ayacahuite, and Taxodium mucronatum) collected from young forests with diverse growth conditions in northern and central Mexico. Seasonal ring growth and earlywood width (EW) were modeled as a function of temperature and soil moisture using the VS-Lite model. Wet and cool conditions in the previous winter and current spring enhance ring growth and EW production, mainly in sensitive species from dry sites (P. teocote, P. pseudostrobus, P. pinceana, and P. montezumae), whereas the growth of species from mesic sites (P. ayacahuite and T. mucronatum) shows little responsiveness to soil moisture. In P. ayacahuite and T. mucronatum, latewood growth is enhanced by warm summer conditions. The VS-Lite model shows that low soil moisture during April and May constrains growth in the four sensitive species, particularly in P. pinceana, the species dominant in the most xeric sites. Assessing seasonal ring growth and combining its response to climate with process-based growth models could complement xylogenesis data. Such framework should be widely applied, given the predicted warming and its impact on young forests.
