A cubic SrTiO3 (STO) composite material co-doped with Ce and Cr ions was synthesized by solvothermal method. selleck chemical The fully characterized samples were employed as photocatalysts for the oxidation of Hg0. The co-doped samples afforded excellent catalytic removal efficiency of 98.99% using UV irradiation and 89.9% using visible light irradiation for Hg0 compared with the single-doped samples. It was found that co-doped samples had a lower electron-hole recombination rate, largest Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area, and reduced band gap. The electron spin resonance results revealed that ·O2- and ·OH were the main active species in the catalytic process. Moreover, the co-doped samples exhibited the best electron transfer rate and the highest photocurrent response intensity. The electron transfer between the elements in the co-doped sample enables it to achieve stable and efficient catalytic performance. In addition, even after five consecutive catalytic runs, the co-doped sample maintained high catalytic activity. This work highlights the potential of the perovskite-type STO materials in the photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous mercury. To pursue the adsorptivity of versatile vermiculite (Na-Vt)-based adsorbent targeted at emerging pharmaceuticals (mefenamic acid and ibuprofen, corresponding to MEA and IBP, respectively), a quinoline-based gemini surfactant (DHQU) with multi-functional groups is applied as modifier on Na-Vt. Enhanced hydrophobicity, enlarged interlayer space and decreased surface area of DHQU-Vt are obtained, whose modifier availability (the mole ratio of modifier intercalated to added) reaches up to 84.18% as characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TG-DTG, EA and BET analysis. Efficient adsorption of MEA/IBP (123.71/240.69 mg/g) is achieved under an extremely low DHQU dosage (0.2 CEC lower than the usual saturated dosage of organo-Vts), with all the processes fitting satisfactorily with pseudo-second order and Freundlich isotherm models accompanied by an exothermic nature. Acid pickling testifies a stable and reliable reusability process of DHQU-Vt even after 3 cycles. Multiple interactions (i.e., partition process, XH-π interaction, π-π interaction, π-π stacking and electrostatic interaction) are revealed and compared from not only characterization results, but also simulation of frontier orbital analysis, the adsorption configuration and bonding analysis (i) The greater molecular flexibility of the adsorbate, the greater intra particle diffusion effect. (ii) π-π stacking between isolated aromatic rings is stronger than that between parallelly connected aromatic rings. (iii) The strength of multiple active sites provided by quinoline (CH-π, NH-π and π-π interactions) are comparable but weaker than electrostatic interaction/intra particle diffusion.Reactive sulfur species (RSS), such as hydrogen per (poly)sulfide, cysteine per (poly)sulfide, glutathione per (poly)sulfide, and protein-bound per (poly)sulfides, can easily react with environmental electrophiles such as methylmercury (MeHg), because of their high nucleophilicity. These RSS are produced by enzymes such as cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) and cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) and are found in mammalian organs. Organs of wildlife have not been analyzed for hydrogen sulfide, cysteine, glutathione, and RSS. In this study, low molecular weight nucleophilic sulfur substances, including RSS, were quantified by stable isotope dilution assay-based liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry using β-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl iodoacetamide to capture the target chemicals in the small Indian mongoose which species possesses high mercury content as same as some marine mammals. Western blotting revealed that the mongoose organs (liver, kidney, cerebrum, and cerebellum) contained proteins that cross-reacted with anti-CBS and CSE antibodies. The expression patterns of these enzymes were similar to those in mice, indicating that mongoose organs contain CBS and CSE. Moreover, bis-methylmercury sulfide (MeHg)2S, which is a low toxic compound in comparison to MeHg, was found in the liver of this species. These results suggest that the small Indian mongoose produces RSS and monothiols associated with detoxification of electrophilic organomercury. The animals which have high mercury content in their bodies may have function of mercury detoxification involved not only Se but also RSS interactions.Achieving mainstream nitritation with aerobic granules is attractive based on increasing evidence but generally treating artificial low-ammonium wastewater. Real municipal wastewater is much more complex in composition, the behavior of the nitritation granules would be different when treating real municipal wastewater. Herein, the response of nitritation granules to influent shift from artificial low-ammonium (35-40 mg/L) wastewater to anaerobically pre-treated municipal wastewater (MWWpre-treated) was investigated at low temperatures. Results showed that MWWpre-treated caused the outgrowth of filamentous bacteria on the granule surface and developed into finger-like structures, which in turn resulted in the decrease of the overall granular sludge settleability. Batch-tests and microbial analysis indicated the functional and microbial differentiation between the newly formed fluffy exterior and the original compact granule. The fluffy exterior was dominated by genus Flavobacterium (66.6%) and primarily functioned as COD removal, whereas the nitrifiers (mainly Nitrosomonas) were still located in the compact core and performed nitritation. Moreover, the heterotrophs-dominated fluffy exterior hindered the oxygen transfer towards nitrifiers located in the compact granule and thereby facilitated the stable NOB repression in the granule particularly at low temperatures ( less then 10 °C). Finally, gradual recovery of the granular sludge morphology and settleability occurred after the influent reverted to synthetic low-ammonium wastewater. Overall, this work demonstrated that the feeding of MWWpre-treated only caused morphological changes of the nitritation granules, but its structural and functional stability could be maintained stably. The risk assessment of cadmium (Cd)-based quantum dots (QDs) used for biomedical nanotechnology applications has stern toxicity concerns. Despite cytotoxicity studies of cadmium telluride (CdTe) QDs, the systematic in vivo study focusing on its organismal effects are more relevant to public health. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the effect of chemically synthesized 3-mercapto propionic acid-functionalized CdTe QDs on organisms' survival, development, reproduction, and behaviour using Drosophila melanogaster as a model. The sub-cellular impact on the larval gut was also evaluated. First/third instar larvae or the adult Drosophila were exposed orally to green fluorescence emitting CdTe QDs (0.2-100 μM), and organisms' longevity, emergence, reproductive performance, locomotion, and reactive oxygen species (ROS), and cell death were assessed. Uptake of semiconductor CdTe QDs was observed as green fluorescence in the gut. A significant decline in percentage survivability up to 80% was evident at urvivability of an organism.Herein, MoO3 nanoparticles were synthesized and modified using Argon cold plasma treatment (Ar-MoO3NPs) for the first time. Various characterization studies were performed using various methods, including SEM, XRD, and FTIR techniques. The catalytic activity of MoO3NPs before and after modification was investigated using fluorometric and colorimetric experiments. The results indicated that the enzyme-mimic activity of MoO3NPs increased after plasma-surface modification (1.5 fold). Also, a fluorometric method based on the oxidation of a non-fluorescent terephthalic acid by Ar-MoO3NPs in the presence of H2O2 and the production of a compound with a high emission was designed for polyphenols detection. Quercetin was used as a polyphenol standard for the optimization of the proposed system. Under the optimum conditions, the dynamic ranges of the calibration graphs and the detection limits were calculated for different polyphenols (μmol/L) quercetin (2-232, 12.22), resveratrol (2-270, 61.89), curcumin (39-400, 38.89), gallic acid (2-309, 21.5) and ellagic acid (39-309, 16.25). Also, the precision of the method, which was expressed as RSD%, was in the range of 0.286-1.19%. The proposed system could detect individual polyphenols and total polyphenols in three different fruit extracts (apple, orange, and grapes) with high sensitivity. The obtained total concentrations of polyphenols in real samples were comparable to those calculated by the spectrophotometric method. So, a novel and sensitive optical nanosensor for the detection of polyphenols was reported as an alternative to the routine Folin-Ciocalteu spectrophotometric technique.Water deficit is a hazardous threat to phytoremediation, while the photosynthetic efficiency of plant leaves can rapidly recover after post-drought irrigation, thereby enhancing the root activity, transpiration rate, and metal accumulation capacity of plants. This study was designed to test whether the phytoextraction effect of drought-stressed Festuca arundinacea could recover to normal levels after post-drought irrigation. Two drought stress levels (D1, slight stress and D2, moderate stress) were carried out at one of five plant growth stages (G1, germinating; G2, tillering; G3, jointing; G4, booting; and G5, flowering). The results showed that drought stress, regardless of level, significantly decreased the transpiration rate of F. arundinacea by 38.9%-85.7%. The degree of reduction of this physiological index was significantly higher in D1G1 and D2G1 than in other treatments. The biomass yield and root activity in D1G3, D1G4, D1G5, D2G3, and D2G4 recovered and even surpassed the normal values after rewatering, suggesting that the detrimental effects of drought stress on F. arundinacea at certain growth stages can be compensated by post-drought irrigation. Drought stress also decreased the Cd uptake capacity of F. arundinacea, and the degree of reduction depended on the stress level and growth stage. Overcompensation for Cd accumulation was observed in D1G3, D1G4, D2G3, and D2G4 after post-drought irrigation. The results indicated that suitable irrigation strategies can improve the phytoextraction effect of F. arundinacea and conserve water resources in practice.
Percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) in calcified coronary artery lesions are associated with impaired stent expansion, higher rate of periprocedural complications and cardiac mortality. Lesion preparation using calcium modifying techniques such as Rotational Atherectomy (RA) or Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) has been advocated. Studies comparing these technologies are lacking. We aimed to compare in-stent pressure gradients, evaluated by vessel fractional flow reserve (vFFR), in calcific lesions treated using either RA or IVL.

Patients undergoing either RA- or IVL-assisted PCI from two European centers were included. Propensity score matching (12) was performed to control for potential bias. Primary outcome was post-PCI in-stent pressure gradients calculated by vFFR (vFFRgrad). Secondary outcomes included the proportion of patients with complete functional revascularization defined as distal vFFR post-PCI (vFFRpost)≥0.90.

From a cohort of 210 patients, 105 matched patients (70 RA and 35 IVL) were included.
