In this study, we consider PD detection based on multimodal voice data that was collected through two channels, i.e., Smart Phone (SP) and Acoustic Cardioid (AC). Four types of data modalities were collected through each channel, namely sustained phonation (P), speech (S), voiced (V), and unvoiced (U) modality. The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, it explores optimal data modality and features having better information about PD. Second, it proposes a MultiModal Data-Driven Ensemble (MMDD-Ensemble) approach for PD detection. The MMDD-Ensemble has two levels. At the first level, different base classifiers are developed that are driven by multimodal voice data. At the second level, the predictions of the base classifiers are fused using blending and voting methods. In order to validate the robustness of the propose method, six evaluation measures, namely accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC), and area under the curve (AUC), are adopted. The proposed method outperformed the best results produced by optimal unimodal framework from both the key evaluation aspects, i.e., accuracy and AUC. Furthermore, the proposed method also outperformed other state-of-the-art ensemble models. Experimental results show that the proposed multimodal approach yields 96% accuracy, 100% sensitivity, 88.88% specificity, 0.914 of MCC, and 0.986 of AUC. These results are promising compared to the recently reported results for PD detection based on multimodal voice data.Introduction Vestibular sensory hair cells are precisely orientated according to planar cell polarity (PCP) and are key to enable mechanic-electrical transduction and normal vestibular function. PCP is found on different scales in the vestibular organs, ranging from correct hair bundle orientation, coordination of hair cell orientation with neighboring hair cells, and orientation around the striola in otolithic organs. Celsr1 is a PCP protein and a Celsr1 KO mouse model showed hair cell disorganization in all vestibular organs, especially in the canalar ampullae. The objective of this work was to assess to what extent the different vestibulo-ocular reflexes were impaired in Celsr1 KO mice. Methods Vestibular function was analyzed using non-invasive video-oculography. Semicircular canal function was assessed during sinusoidal rotation and during angular velocity steps. Otolithic function (mainly utricular) was assessed during off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) and during static and dynamic head tilts. Results Tthe accurate encoding of the head movement and that the loss of a small fraction of the otolithic hair cells in pathological conditions is likely to have major functional consequences. Altogether, these results shed light on how partial loss of vestibular information encoding, as often encountered in pathological situations, translates into functional deficits.Depression is a leading cause of disability and affects more than 4% of the population worldwide. Even though its pathophysiology remains elusive, it is now well accepted that peripheral inflammation might increase the risk of depressive episodes in a subgroup of patients. However, there is still insufficient knowledge about the mechanisms by which inflammation induces alterations in brain function. In neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases, extensive studies have reported that inflammation negatively impacts mitochondrial health, contributing to excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, energy deficits, and eventually neuronal death. In addition, damaged mitochondria can release a wide range of damage-associated molecular patterns that are potent activators of the inflammatory response, creating a feed-forward cycle between oxidative stress, mitochondrial impairment, inflammation, and neuronal dysfunction. Surprisingly, the possible involvement of this vicious cycle in the pathophysiology of inflammation-associated depression remains understudied. In this mini-review we summarize the research supporting the association between neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and bioenergetic failure in inflammation-associated depression to highlight the relevance of further studies addressing this crosstalk.Temporary conductive hearing loss (CHL) can lead to hearing impairments that persist beyond resolution of the CHL. In particular, unilateral CHL leads to deficits in auditory skills that rely on binaural input (e.g., spatial hearing). Here, we asked whether single neurons in the auditory midbrain, which integrate acoustic inputs from the two ears, are altered by a temporary CHL. We introduced 6 weeks of unilateral CHL to young adult chinchillas via foam earplug. Following CHL removal and restoration of peripheral input, single-unit recordings from inferior colliculus (ICC) neurons revealed the CHL decreased the efficacy of inhibitory input to the ICC contralateral to the earplug and increased inhibitory input ipsilateral to the earplug, effectively creating a higher proportion of monaural responsive neurons than binaural. Moreover, this resulted in a ∼10 dB shift in the coding of a binaural sound location cue (interaural-level difference, ILD) in ICC neurons relative to controls. link2 The direction of the shift was consistent with a compensation of the altered ILDs due to the CHL. ICC neuron responses carried ∼37% less information about ILDs after CHL than control neurons. Cochlear peripheral-evoked responses confirmed that the CHL did not induce damage to the auditory periphery. We find that a temporary CHL altered auditory midbrain neurons by shifting binaural responses to ILD acoustic cues, suggesting a compensatory form of plasticity occurring by at least the level of the auditory midbrain, the ICC.Previous research indicates elevated levels of clinically significant traits and symptoms of autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children with chronic pain, but associations with functioning and depression are yet unclear. The current study examined the relationships of autistic traits and ADHD symptoms with pain interference, depression, and health-related quality of life, as well as the mediating roles of insomnia and psychological inflexibility, in children with chronic pain (n = 146, 8-17 years, 102 girls) presenting at a tertiary pain clinic. Children completed measures of pain intensity, depression, pain interference, health-related quality of life, insomnia, and psychological inflexibility. Parents (n = 146, 111 mothers) completed measures to assess autistic traits and ADHD symptoms in their children. link3 Children with clinically significant autistic traits and ADHD symptoms presented with significantly higher levels of depressive symptoms and pain interference, eurodevelopmental disorders.Religious attendance is sometimes associated with better health outcomes, although the link between religion and cognitive ageing is inconclusive. We aimed to assess differences in cognitive performance trajectories by religious affiliation and religious attendance. We further sought to test possible mechanisms for an association.Data from the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA), a nationally representative study of the over 50 s population in Ireland, was used. We identified latent class trajectories of Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) performance over five waves using Latent Growth Class Analysis (LGCA) on data from 7325 individuals. Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate the likelihood of membership to each trajectory class by religious affiliation or non-affiliation, and by religious attendance and importance. Finally, we tested possible behavioural, psychological and social mechanisms. LGCA identified three trajectory classes, a 'high start' class, a 'medium start' class and a 'low start' class. There were no differences in class membership by religious affiliation or non-affiliation. Women who attended religious services were less likely to be in the low declining MMSE class. This effect was mediated by depressive symptoms, social network and smoking. Women who said religion was very important were more likely to be in the medium performing class, and this was not mediated. The cognitive trajectories of the over 50 s in Ireland vary. Variation was not influenced by religious affiliation. Religious attendance and importance had mixed effects on women's cognition trajectories.

Given the rapidly ageing and low fertility context of Singapore where the prevalence of older adults living alone and without children is expected to increase, we construct multistate life tables to estimate the number of years that older persons can expect to live in different living arrangements at a population level (population-based) as well as based on their initial living arrangement (status-based). We focus particularly on whether there are gender differences in the expected years of life in different living arrangement states. We use the Panel on Health and Ageing of Singaporean Elderly, a 2009 nationally representative survey of 4990 Singaporeans aged 60 years and older, with follow-up surveys in 2011 and 2015. In calculating the probabilities of transition between different states, we control for number of children, housing type, and time-varying ADL limitations. We find that at age 60, women can expect to spend more than twice the proportion (18%) of their remaining lives living alone compared to men (7%). Status-based estimates indicate that the proportion of remaining years living with a child is higher for women initially living alone, with a spouse only or already with a child, compared to males. Our results indicate that while older women are more likely to live alone compared to their male counterparts, older women living alone are also more likely to transition to living with children. Our research sheds light on the importance of expanding research on life expectancy beyond health, to consider analysis using other forms of social stratification, particularly gender differences in states of living arrangement.

The online version of this article contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10433-020-00594-3.Many studies show that females' age at first childbirth affects important outcomes of these females and their offspring such as health- and socioeconomic-related variables. This paper analyzes whether there is a causal relationship between working mothers' school entry age and the timing at which they give birth by exploiting Korea's elementary school entry cutoff regulation. Using administrative employment insurance data that record the fertility history of female working mothers together with regression discontinuity design, we find that a year's delay in age at school starting increases age at first and second childbirth by approximately 3 and 4 months, respectively. We also find that one of the mechanisms that affects the relationship between these two variables is age at first employment. The estimated effects of SSA are likely to be salient in a country where educational sequence that a student experience is rigid.
