The aim of this study was to explore effects of HGF to impact fibroblast-induced collagen degradation. A patient-derived experimental cell culture model of periodontitis was applied. Primary human epithelial cells and fibroblasts isolated from periodontitis-affected gingiva were co-cultured in a three-dimensional collagen gel. The effects of HGF neutralizing antibody on collagen gel degradation were tested and transcriptome analyses were performed. HGF neutralizing antibody attenuated collagen degradation and elicited expression changes of genes related to extracellular matrix (ECM) and cell adhesion, indicating that HGF signaling inhibition leads to extensive impact on cell-cell and cell-ECM interactions. Our study highlights a potential role of HGF in periodontitis. Antagonizing HGF signaling by a neutralizing antibody may represent a novel approach for periodontitis treatment.Melanins are natural pigments widely distributed in nature from bacteria to humans. To identify commonly used needle types in cross-sectional interventional radiology (CSIR) and to review features and safety profiles of those needles.
Members of the Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR) emerging technologies commission (ETC) on CSIR were sent a 13-question survey about what needles they use for common CSIR procedures random and targeted solid organ biopsy, ultrasound-guided paracentesis, and ultrasound-guided thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA). Results were compiled with descriptive statistics, and features of the most commonly used needles were reviewed.
19 surveys were completed (response rate 57.6%, 19/33) from 16 institutions. For solid organ biopsies, the majority of respondents reported using an 18-gauge needle with an automatic firing mechanism and a variable throw length option. The most commonly used needle for both random and targeted biopsies was the Argon BioPince (26.3%, 5/19) The three most commonly used needles for solid organ biopsies all featured automatic firing, variable throw length options, and 18-gauge size. A 5 French Cook Yueh needle was most the most commonly used paracentesis needle (36.8%, 7/19). For thyroid FNA, all respondents used spinal needles, and 25-gauge was the most common size (72.2%, 13/18).

Anatomical knowledge of the floor of the third ventricle (FTV) is essential in avoiding surgical complications during endoscopic third ventriculostomy. The purpose of this study was to characterize the morphometry of FTV and related arteries, particularly the basilar artery (BA), as well as the factors that influence it.
Twenty-six formalin-fixed adult brains and two hundred adult brain MRIs were studied focusing on FTV and related arteries. Dimensions of interest were measured using image analysis software. Morphometric data obtained were statistically analysed.
Distances between FTV, intermammillary sulcus (IMS), infundibulum, BA bifurcation, and posterior communicating arteries (PCoAs) were described on the cadavers and the MRIs. Distance between right and left PCoAs was greater at their anterior extremity (p < 0.001). link2 Right PCoA was longer (p = 0.016). BA was lateralized in 58.4% of cases and its calibre was larger in males (p < 0.001). The distance from BA apex to FTV was inversely correlated with BA diameter (p < 0.001) and age (p = 0.004). Distance from IMS to infundibulum and the distance between both PCoAs were greater in MRI series when compared to cadaver series (p < 0.001).

Over the years, several studies have highlighted additional roles of HP1 in different cellular processes including telomere maintenance, DNA replication and repair, chromosome segregation and, surprisingly, positive regulation of gene expression. In this review, we briefly summarize past research and recent results supporting the unexpected and emerging role of HP1 in activating gene expression. In particular, we discuss the role of HP1 in post-transcriptional regulation of mRNA processing because it has proved decisive in the control of germline stem cells homeostasis in Drosophila and has certainly added a new dimension to our understanding on HP1 targeting and functions in epigenetic regulation of stem cell behaviour.
Fetal ultrasound organ screening has become a standard of care in most high-income countries. This has resulted in increased detection of congenital abnormalities, which may lead to major uncertainty and anxiety in expectant parents, even though many of them are of minor relevance. In order to optimize prenatal counselling, we introduced an interdisciplinary approach for all pregnant women referred to our center by private obstetricians for a co-assessment of suspected relevant fetal abnormalities of the kidney or urinary tract, involving both experienced prenatal ultrasound specialists and a pediatric nephrologist or urologist.
In a retrospective analysis, we evaluated reports of intrauterine evaluation and postnatal follow-up in order to assess accuracy of explicit intrauterine diagnoses and outcome of hydronephroses according to their severity in this setting.
A total of 175 fetuses were examined between 2012 and 2019 and followed postnatally at our Pediatric Nephrology or Urology Department. There wate and allows a good discrimination between relevant and transient/physiological hydronephroses. There are no multi-center studies examining omentectomy and peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter revision in the pediatric dialysis population.
We performed a retrospective study at eight centers within the Pediatric Nephrology Research Consortium (PNRC). link3 Data review included all incident tunneled PD catheters placed between 1/1/2011 and 12/31/2016 in pediatric stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD 5) patients. The primary outcome was the need for catheter revision and/or replacement. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to evaluate predictors for catheter revision/replacement.
Data from 184 children (62.5% male; median age 7.4 years) were analyzed. Omentectomy was completed in 63.6% (n = 117). Revision/replacement occurred in 34.2% (n = 63); median time to revision/replacement was 38.5 days after insertion. PD catheter revision/replacement catheter occurred in 23.9% who underwent omentectomy versus 52.2% without omentectomy (p = 0.0005). Caring for a child with kidney failure on dialysis profoundly impacts caregivers' lives, yet the depth of this burden is not well understood. The Paediatric Renal Caregiver Burden Scale (PR-CBS) is a recently validated instrument used to measure caregiver burden in this population.
We performed a cross-sectional study of caregiver burden for caregivers of children with kidney failure receiving dialysis at three pediatric centers. Caregivers completed the PR-CBS instrument as part of a larger qualitative study of caregiver experience. We performed descriptive statistics. T-tests were used to examine differences between dialysis modality and within key demographics. Multivariate linear regression was utilized to assess associations between significant factors and total score.
Ten caregivers of children receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD) and 21 receiving hemodialysis (HD) participated. Total burden score and mean score for every domain was higher for caregivers of children on HD compared to PD. PR-CBS score was significantly associated with younger child age and married status in caregivers.
