Analyzing the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on meningococcal C conjugate vaccination in Brazil.
Ecological study, based on interrupted time series, carried out with data collected through the Information System of the National Immunization Program (IS-NIP). Collected data refer to the number of meningococcal C conjugate vaccine doses administered from March 2019 to December 2020.
In total, 14,832,054 meningococcal C conjugate vaccine doses were administered throughout the investigated period; 66.30% of them, from March 2019 to February 2020 and 33.70%, from March to December 2020. Statistically significant steps were observed, i.e., the COVID-19 pandemic had negative impact on the number of MenC vaccine doses administered in the North and South regions (26,98% and 41.47%, respectively) and in the eleven Brazilian States.

The aim of the survey was to measure the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAPs) toward AI among undergraduate university students in East Java, Indonesia, and observe the correlation between KAPs and the factors associated with the control and prevention of AI. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among undergraduate students to collect information about AI-related KAPs. Students were selected from three faculties of Universitas Airlangga Surabaya Indonesia (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine, and Faculty of Science and Technology). Students voluntarily responded to a pre-designed questionnaire. Results A total of 425 students (222 female; and 203 male), of ages ranging from 18 years (n=240) to 20-30 years (n=185), responded to the survey. This cohort consisted of 157 students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine, 149 from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and 119 from the Faculty of Science and Technology. The results indicated that appropriate knowledge was obtained by 76.94% of students; significantly higher levels were seen in Faculty of Veterinary Medicine students as compared to the other two faculties (p less then 0.05). 72.89% of students documented positive attitudes; veterinary medicine students had significantly more positive attitudes than other faculties (p less then 0.05). Proactive behaviors were observed in 56.90% of students. The aggregate scores for KAPs were 6.93 ± 0.77 (range 0-9) for knowledge, 7.6 ± 1.25 (range 0-10) for attitude, and 9.1 ± 1.5 (range 0-12) for practice.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term prognosis of small-incision femtosecond laser-assisted intracorneal concave lenticule implantation (SFII) in correction of human keratoconus.
This was a prospective study for 11 patients who received SFII after being diagnosed as progressive keratoconus based on the Amsler-Krumeich classification system. Clinical assessment was performed for all the patients prior to and postsurgically at different time points for 5 years. These included uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), biomechanically corrected intraocular pressure (bIOP), corneal topography, anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT), confocal microscopy, and biomechanical assessment with Corvis ST.
Comparison of preoperative and 60-month postoperative UDVA and CDVA (
=0.081 and 0.001, respectively), all eyes showed an improvement in CDVA. Corneal topography showed no significant changes in corneal anterior K1, K2, posterior K1, K2, posterior elevation, or corneal densitometry compared with preoperative levels (
> 0.05). Corvis ST showed that central corneal thickness (CCT) and stiffness at applanation 1 (SP-A1) were significantly greater 1 week postsurgically when compared to the baseline (

Under confocal microscopy, corneal edema and an increase in cell activation and reflectivity were observed at the lenticule-stromal interface within 1 week postoperatively. Dietary restriction attenuates signaling through the nutrient sensing mTOR pathway, which reduces translation and redirects resources to preserve the soma. These responses are associated with increased lifespan but also anabolic impairment, phenotypes also observed when translation is genetically suppressed. Here, we restricted translation downstream of mTOR separately in major tissues in C. elegans to better understand their roles in systemic adaptation and whether consequences to anabolic impairment were separable from positive effects on lifespan. Lowering translation in neurons, hypodermis, or germline tissue led to increased lifespan under well-fed conditions and improved survival upon withdrawal of food, indicating that these are key tissues coordinating enhanced survival when protein synthesis is reduced. Surprisingly, lowering translation in body muscle during development shortened lifespan while accelerating and increasing reproduction, a reversal of phenotypic trade-offs associated with systemic translation suppression. Suppressing mTORC1 selectively in body muscle also increased reproduction while slowing motility during development. In nature, this may be indicative of reduced energy expenditure related to foraging, acting as a "GO!" signal for reproduction. Together, results indicate that low translation in different tissues helps direct distinct systemic adaptations and suggest that unknown endocrine signals mediate these responses. Furthermore, mTOR or translation inhibitory therapeutics that target specific tissues may achieve desired interventions to aging without loss of whole-body anabolism.Few studies consider socioeconomic status when assessing mortality risk in dyslipidemia cases. This study used cohort data from the 2010 Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES), which contains data on older Japanese people, to associate socioeconomic status with mortality risk in patients treated for dyslipidemia. In this 6-year longitudinal study, we examined 47,275 older Japanese people aged ≥ 65 years who could independently perform activities of daily living. Patients' background characteristics were classified based on their dyslipidemia treatment status and were assessed using the chi-squared test. The mortality risk was assessed using the Cox proportional hazards model, wherein the objective and explanatory variables were total mortality and self-report of dyslipidemia treatment, respectively. The participants were stratified by sex and age into younger (aged 65-74 years) and older (aged ≥ 75 years) groups of men and women. The results were adjusted, with health condition, health behavior, and socioeconomic status as confounding factors. The adjusted hazard ratios of 5514 people who died during the follow-up who had self-reported dyslipidemia treatment were 0.49 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.35-0.69] for younger men; 0.57 (95% CI 0.42-0.76) for older men; 0.52 (95% CI 0.34-0.80) for younger women; and 0.47 (95% CI 0.33-0.67) for older women. Older people undergoing treatment for dyslipidemia had factors beneficial for health, such as good socioeconomic status. Despite considering these factors, individuals undergoing dyslipidemia treatment had a negative association with mortality risk.The goal of our study is to understand the impact of Tobacco 21 (T21) laws on youth smoking and health equity. We conducted modified Poisson regression models using 2014-2019 Monitoring the Future data to measure the impact of attending school in a county 100% covered by a T21 law versus counties with less then 100% T21 coverage on past 30-day smoking participation (n = 262,632), first cigarette smoking initiation (n = 189,698), and daily smoking initiation among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders (n = 214,496), separately. Additive interactions were tested between T21 coverage and sex, race/ethnicity, parental education, and college plans. T21 coverage was associated with a lower likelihood of smoking participation among 12th graders. T21 coverage was most strongly associated with a lower likelihood of smoking participation among Hispanic and NH (Non-Hispanic) Other/Multiracial individuals; respondents with parents who had less than a college education; and respondents who were not definitely planning on attending college. T21 laws were associated with a lower likelihood of smoking participation among 12th graders. T21 policies were most impactful for individuals disproportionately impacted by tobacco, indicating T21 laws might help reduce tobacco-related health disparities.Although alcohol increases the risk of cancer, awareness of alcohol-related cancer risks is low. Alcohol use is prevalent among young adults, and understanding factors associated with awareness and perceptions of alcohol-related cancer risks in this group is critical for cancer prevention efforts. We examined the demographic, tobacco, and alcohol related correlates of young adults' awareness and perceptions of alcohol as a behavioral risk factor for cancer. We completed a secondary analysis of data collected in February 2020 in the U.S. from 1,328 young adults (ages 18-30) who completed a cross-sectional online survey. Participants reported (1) awareness of alcohol as a risk factor for cancer and (2) perceived risks of serious disease such as cancer. We analyzed demographic characteristics, alcohol use, and tobacco use associated with these outcome variables using multivariable regression. Overall, 18.5% of participants believed that alcohol does not increase cancer risk. Perceived cancer risk associated with alcohol use was moderate (M 3.2, SD 1.6, 1-7 scale). In multivariable analysis, awareness of risk was significantly higher among those with higher socioeconomic status. Perceived risk was significantly greater among those with higher socioeconomic status, higher alcohol consumption, and a history of tobacco use. These findings indicate research is warranted to better understand awareness of alcohol as a behavioral risk factor for cancer and associated beliefs in subgroups of young adults to help guide the development of interventions to raise awareness of the risks of cancer associated with alcohol use.
