Alkyl quaternary ammonium-modified clay minerals, which are common environmentally friendly materials, have been widely studied and applied for the removal of pollutants. However, there are few reports on functionalizing the counterions to expand the application. In this study, the cationic gemini surfactant butane-1,4-bis(dodecyl dimethyl ammonium bromide) (gBDDA) and tetrachloroferrate (FeCl4-) are designed to modify montmorillonite (Mt), and the obtained FeCl4-/Gemini-Mt composite (FeOMt) is used for the removal of nitrate and/or phosphate from aqueous solution. The successful intercalation of gBDDA and favorable loading of FeCl4- into FeOMt are suggested by the characterization results of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Nitrate and/or phosphate are rapidly sequestered, and the respective maximum uptakes of 8.77 (N) and 28.1 (P) mg/g in the binary system are obtained. The phosphate uptake is stably maintained against many coexisting ions, but the nitrate uptake decreases with the increase in ionic strength. FeOMt is reusable and shows comparable uptake for nitrate and phosphate with respect to gBDDA-modified Mt and polymerized ferric chloride. Considering the multi-functionality and facile synthesis, FeOMt shows promising potential in the purification of wastewater contaminated simultaneously by poorly hydrated anions (e.g., ClO4-, TcO4-, etc.) and iron-selective anions (e.g., H2AsO4-, etc.).Continuing our previous research work on a drug delivery system based on combined AC/DC magnetic fields, we have developed a prototype AC/DC magnetic syringe device for stimulation of drug release from drug carriers, with the options of injecting/removing drug carriers. The porous Fe3O4 carrier, in a dose-dependent manner, causes acute oxidative damage and reduces the viability of differentiated SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells, indicating the necessity for its removal once it reaches the therapeutic concentration at the target tissue. The working mechanism of the device consists of three simple steps. First, direct injection of the drug adsorbed on the surface of a carrier via a needle inserted into the targeted area. The second step is stimulation of drug release using a combination of AC magnetic field (a coil magnetised needle with AC current) and permanent magnets (DC magnetic lens outside of the body), and the third step is removal of the drug carriers from the injected area after the completion of drug release by magnetising the tip of the needle with DC current. Removing the drug carriers allows us to avoid possible acute and long term side effects of the drug carriers in the patient's body, as well as any potential response of the body to the drug carriers.Cystic echinococcosis is a widespread zoonosis caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. In intermediary hosts, two types of echinococcal cysts can be found fertile, which produce protoscoleces, the infective form of the parasite to dogs; and infertile, that do not present protoscoleces and therefore are not able to continue with the parasite life cycle. The adventitial layer, the local immune response against the cyst, plays an important role in cyst fertility. Grazing cattle can often feature Fasciola hepatica co-infection, a parasite known to modulate the host systemic immune response. In this work the cellular Th1/Th2 immune profiles were evaluated in the adventitial layer of fertile and non-fertile cysts with and without co-infection with Fasciola hepatica. Measuring with immunohistochemistry and qPCR in adventitial layer, we report that non-fertile cysts present higher levels of Th1 cytokines (IFN-γ (P  less then  0.0001) and TNF-α (P  less then  0.05)), and fertile cysts have higher levels of Th2 cytokines (IL-4 (P  less then  0.001)). Co-infection with Fasciola hepatica is associated with a decrease in the expression of IL-4 (P  less then  0.05) and an increase in the expression of IFN-γ (P  less then  0.0001) in the adventitial layer of fertile cysts. Non-fertile cysts were associated with higher levels of Th1 cytokines in the adventitial layer, with IFN-γ expression enhanced by F. hepatica co-infection (P  less then  0.0001), confirming that polyparasitism should be considered in the treatment and control of naturally infected cattle.Trypanosoma evansi is the agent of "surra," a trypanosomosis endemic in many areas worldwide. Trypanosoma proteins released/secreted during infection are attractive biomarkers for disease detection and monitoring. Using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), we performed a comprehensive analysis of the serum proteome of mice infected with T.evansi and detected changes in the abundance of parasite and host serum proteins during infection. Following bioinformatics analysis, 30 T. evansi proteins were identified in the mice serum including known targets such as pyruvate kinase 1, β-tubulin, actin A, heat shock protein 70, and cyclophilin A. CUDC-907 price We also identified two exclusive VSG epitopes which are novel putative biomarker targets. In addition, upregulation of 31 mouse proteins, including chitinase-like protein 3 and monocyte differentiation antigen CD14, were observed. Identification of parasite-specific biomarkers in the host serum is critical for the development of reliable serological/ assays for differential diagnosis. The risk of oral intake of metals from the ingestion of contaminated Achachatina marginata was carried-out. Snail samples (n = 48) were hand-picked, preserved in ice, then analyzed for zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr) using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES, Yobin Yvon JY-24), then cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS, 4110 ZL PerkinElmer). The mean levels of metals in snail from each sampling point were higher compared to the control site. SP 1 had the highest significant levels (p Cr. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of Cd (5.61 × 10-3 mg/kg/day) was higher than the reference oral dose (RfD) value of 0.001 mg/kg/day. The target hazard quotient (THQ) of Cd (5.61) and the hazard index (HI) of metals (6.80) were greater than 1. The carcinogenic risk (CR) of Ni (5.43 × 10-3) and Cd (2.13 × 10-3) from contaminated snails intake were higher than the safe range of 10-6 to 10-4. The THQ, EDI of Cd, HI of the metals, and the CR values of Ni and Cd in snails from the contaminated site reveals a potential future health challenge to consumers and a possibility of contracting cancer over a 70 year lifetime. Furthermore, the findings revealed that the site requires a thorough clean-up for the total restoration of the environment.Rising of temperature in conjunction with acidification due to the anthropogenic climates has tremendously affected all aquatic life. Small changes in the surrounding environment could lead to physiological constraint in the individual. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effects of warm water temperature (32 °C) and low pH (pH 6) on physiological responses and growth of hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀ × Epinephelus lanceolatus ♂) juveniles for 25 days. Growth performance was significantly affected under warm water temperature and low-pH conditions. Surprisingly, the positive effect on growth was observed under the interactive effects of warm water and low pH exposure. link2 Hybrid grouper exposed to the interactive stressor of warm temperature and low pH exhibited higher living cost, where HSI content was greatly depleted to about 2.3-folds than in normal circumstances. Overall, challenge to warm temperature and low pH induced protein mobilization as an energy source followed by glycogen and lipid to support basal metabolic needs. In this work, ZnO-CdWO4 nanoparticles have been synthesized by the ecofriendly green method with lemon leaf extract to favorably anchor functional groups on their surface. The prepared ZnO-CdWO4 nanoparticles are used as adsorbent to treat Congo red (CR) dye after characterization through FT-IR, UV-Vis, TEM, SEM-EDX, and HRTEM techniques. The equilibrium partition coefficient and adsorption capacity values for CR by ZnO-CdWO4 are estimated as 21.4 mg g-1 μM-1 and 5 mg g-1, respectively (at an initial dye concentration of 10 mg L-1). The adsorption process is found as exothermic and spontaneous, as determined by the ΔG°, ΔS°, and ΔH° values. The Boyd plot has been used as a confirmatory tool to fit the adsorption kinetics data along with intraparticle diffusion and pseudo-second-order models. Based on this research, ZnO-CdWO4 nanoparticles are validated as an effective adsorbent for CR dye in aqueous solutions.Excessive avoidance behaviour is a cardinal symptom of anxiety disorders. Avoidance is not only associated with the benefits of avoiding threats, but also with the costs of missing out on rewards upon exploration. Psychological and psychophysiological mechanisms contributing to these costly avoidance decisions in prospect of mixed outcomes remain unclear. We developed a novel Fearful Avoidance Task (FAT) that resembles characteristics of real-life approach-avoidance conflicts, enabling to disentangle reward and threat effects. Using the FAT, we investigated individual differences in avoidance behaviour and anticipatory psychophysiological states (i.e. startle reflex and skin conductance) in a relatively large sample of 343 (78 females) participants. Avoidance under acute threat of shock depends on a trade-off between perceived reward and threat. Both increased startle and skin conductance in the absence of threat of shock emerged as predictors of increased avoidance (potentially indicative of fear generalization). Increased avoidance was also associated with female sex and trait anxiety, dependent on reward and threat levels. Our findings highlight distinct possible predictors of heightened avoidance and add to mechanistic understanding of how individual propensity for costly avoidance may emerge. Distinct avoidance typologies based on differential reward and threat sensitivities may have different mechanistic origins and thereby could benefit from different treatment strategies.Infants with symptomatic congenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMV) suffer from long-term sequelae. This study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of combining immunoglobulin (Ig) fetal therapy (FT) and neonatal therapy (NT) with antiviral drugs to improve neurological outcomes of affected infants. Women whose fetuses had symptomatic cCMV received Ig injection into the fetal peritoneal cavity and/or maternal blood as FT, while affected newborns received oral valganciclovir or intravenous ganciclovir as NT. We compared the neurological outcomes at ≥18 months old between infants receiving FT with or without NT (FT group) and those receiving NT only (NT group). From 2009-2019, 15 women whose fetuses had symptomatic cCMV received FT, while 19 newborns received NT only. In FT group, two newborns died, and two were less then 18 months old. Neurological outcomes of the remaining 11 infants in FT group were as follows normal 45.5 %, mild impairments 36.4 %, and severe impairments 18.2 %. In NT group, one newborn died, one's parents refused the follow-up, one was less then 18 months old, and two had only chorioretinitis as symptoms. link3 Neurological outcomes of the remaining 14 infants in NT group were as follows normal 21.4 %, mild impairments 14.3 %, and severe impairments 64.3 %. The proportion of infants with severe impairments in FT group was significantly lower than that in NT group (18.2 % vs 64.3 %, p less then 0.05). This is the first trial demonstrating that the combination of Ig FT and NT with antiviral drugs may be more effective in improving neurological outcomes of newborns with symptomatic cCMV as compared to NT only.
